For a YouTube forest ambience stream, set OBS to Stereo, use 44.1 kHz audio at 128 Kbps, and configure the video encoder for YouTube’s current resolution- and frame-rate-specific recommendations. Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, enable automatic reconnect, and test the complete scene before leaving it live. These are YouTube-specific recommendations where noted—not universal settings or a guarantee that a computer and connection can run indefinitely.
Set up stereo audio in OBS
- Open Settings → Audio and set Channels to Stereo.
- Select the device or source that plays the forest recording. Start playback and check the Audio Mixer: its meter should move when audio is present. If it does not, choose the intended device manually rather than assuming OBS is capturing the right one.
- Listen to the stream preview or a test recording with headphones. Confirm that both left and right channels carry the expected ambience and that the audio is not muted or unintentionally doubled by capturing the same source twice.
For YouTube Live, YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps, with AAC or MP3 audio encoding. These figures are YouTube recommendations, not a rule for other platforms. Check the destination service’s current audio requirements if you stream somewhere else. YouTube’s live encoder settings explain its supported formats and recommendations.
Choose video output settings for the destination
There is no single bitrate that is safe for every 24/7 stream. Choose the destination platform, resolution, and frame rate first, then select an encoder and bitrate that fit both the platform’s ingest guidance and the upload connection you can sustain. A static forest scene may look simple, but the encoder still has to process and send the configured output continuously.
YouTube Live example
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, recommends CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS. It says not to exceed a 4-second keyframe interval. Its bitrate recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate, so use the current table on YouTube’s encoder settings page for your chosen output instead of treating one generic bitrate as a preset.

- Everything in the box: Includes Pro Tools Intro+, Ableton Live Lite, Cubase LE, and Hitmaker Expansion: a suite of essential effects, powerful software instruments, and easy-to-use mastering tools
- Rate control: CBR for YouTube Live, as recommended by YouTube.
- Keyframes: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Connection: Use RTMPS where supported by your chosen encoder and destination.
- Resolution and frame rate: Choose a target your computer can encode and your upload connection can sustain; consult the platform’s matching bitrate guidance.
For another destination, do not assume these YouTube-specific encoder values apply. Follow that platform’s current ingest instructions.
Check connection capacity before going live
OBS identifies dropped frames as a sign that the connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the selected bitrate. Its troubleshooting advice is to try another server and lower the video bitrate. OBS also gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when diagnosing connection problems; treat that as troubleshooting guidance, not a guaranteed bitrate formula. See the OBS stream connection troubleshooting guide.

- Test the actual streaming computer and network, not just a speed-test result from a different device or time.
- Leave headroom for normal changes in available upload capacity; a bitrate that nearly matches a brief speed-test result may not be sustainable.
- If frames drop, reduce video bitrate or try a different ingest server, then test again while monitoring stream health.
Prepare OBS for a long-running stream
- In OBS, find Settings → Advanced and enable Automatically Reconnect. Use the available retry settings appropriate to your setup.
- Start the forest ambience source and verify its audio meter, stereo output, video scene, and destination preview.
- Run a test stream for several minutes and check both sound and picture at the destination. OBS strongly encourages a short test before a real stream; a successful test helps catch setup errors but cannot prove uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
- During the live session, monitor the platform’s stream-health indicators and OBS connection status. Confirm the platform’s current rules for continuous broadcasts and whether live streams are archived; those policies differ by service and are not established here for an unspecified destination.
Long-run capability depends on the computer, encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, connection, and destination service. OBS cautions that a system meeting its compatibility requirements is not thereby guaranteed to be capable of streaming. See OBS system requirements and the OBS Studio overview.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Audio Mixer meter does not move | OBS is listening to the wrong device, or the source is not playing. | Check that the recording is playing, then select the intended audio device manually in OBS audio settings. |
| Audio is mono or one side is missing | Channel layout or source routing does not match the intended stereo output. | Set OBS Channels to Stereo and verify left/right playback with headphones. Avoid surround output for a stereo stream; mismatched channel layouts can remap or remove channels. |
| Dropped frames or unstable stream | The connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. | Try another server and lower video bitrate. OBS’s 75%-of-total-upload-speed figure is a troubleshooting starting point, not a universal target. |
| Stream fails to reconnect | Automatic reconnect is disabled, or the destination/network issue persists. | Confirm automatic reconnect is enabled, check OBS and platform status, and verify the stream key and ingest configuration before restarting. |
| Computer struggles while streaming | The encoder, output resolution/FPS, or scene may exceed the machine’s practical capacity. | Reduce output demands or select an encoder the hardware can handle, then test again. System compatibility alone does not guarantee streaming capability. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your forest ambience is a pre-recorded video and you do not want a computer or home connection running the encoder, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud option: upload the recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos rather than streaming from a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start the StreamNeo free day.
