To test a meditation stream privately, set its visibility to Private in YouTube Studio, then enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in your encoder. Start the feed, check the preview and playback, and review the replay’s privacy after ending the test. A stream key is a credential: keep it off screen and reset it if exposed.
Before you start: check live-streaming eligibility
YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance says the channel must be verified, have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the creator must be at least 16. Confirm that Live Control Room is available for the channel before setting up the test. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Set up a private test in YouTube Studio
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then open the Stream tab. Create a stream or select the one you intend to test. Check its title and details.
- Choose visibility before sending video. Set visibility to Private for a closed test. YouTube also offers Unlisted, which is distinct: choose according to who should be able to access the test. Do not assume the stream is private by default. YouTube’s visibility and stream setup instructions are in Manage live streams.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. In Live Control Room, find the stream settings. Copy YouTube’s server URL into your encoder’s server or RTMP field and the stream key into its stream-key field. If the encoder offers a YouTube destination, you can select that instead and enter the key where prompted.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Begin sending the feed. For a scheduled stream, wait until it appears in Live Control Room, check the preview, then click Go live when ready. Follow the Studio workflow for the stream you created or selected.
Protect the stream key
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Anyone who obtains a usable key may be able to send a feed to that stream. Do not reveal it in a screen recording, tutorial, chat, or shared screenshot. If it is exposed, reset the key in Live Control Room and replace the saved key in the encoder. What to check during the meditation test
Confirm the complete audio and video path
Test with audio and movement similar to the intended stream, as YouTube recommends for getting comfortable with the process. For a meditation test, include the planned voice, ambience, or silence. Listen for clear, consistent playback and check that the visual is framed as intended. These are practical checks for this use case, not YouTube-published audio-level standards.

Watch stream health and leave upload headroom
Check Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health information, and monitor playback quality. YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate within available upload capacity with about 20% headroom; account for primary and backup bitrates if both are being sent. Check upload speed rather than relying on download speed. An interruption in the network can break the stream. See YouTube’s recommended encoder settings and network guidance.
Choose stability over unnecessary low latency
Latency is the delay between capture and playback. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase buffering. A one-way meditation test usually does not require rapid audience interaction, so prioritize a stable feed and verify the result on another device or watch page instead of choosing the lowest latency without a need. End the test and check the replay
- End the stream using the Studio controls, then stop the encoder.
- Open the saved stream in YouTube Studio and check its visibility. A private live setting does not replace checking the replay’s separate privacy controls; change the replay to private or delete it if appropriate.
- Do not rely on an archive for a stream longer than 12 hours. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
Troubleshooting
- No preview appears: confirm the encoder is sending to YouTube’s server URL and that the stream key matches the selected stream. Check that the channel can use Live Control Room and that the encoder is running.
- YouTube rejects the feed or the wrong stream receives it: recheck that the server URL and key were copied from the intended stream. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder.
- Playback buffers or loses quality: inspect stream health and upload capacity, then reduce bitrate if it exceeds what the connection can sustain. Keep the recommended upload headroom, including backup bitrate where applicable.
- The replay is accessible to the wrong people: check the archive’s visibility in Studio and change it to private or delete it. Live visibility and replay visibility should both be reviewed.
