First check whether the source went blank while OBS stayed connected, or whether OBS lost its connection to YouTube’s ingest server. Use the recovery controls for the failure you actually have: restarting a clip does not reconnect a stream, and reconnecting a stream does not repair a missing media file.
First identify which part failed
Watch OBS’s status and preview, then check the live broadcast in YouTube Studio. A blank source preview while OBS remains connected points to source playback or its file or URL. Dropped frames or an intermittent disconnection points instead to the connection between your computer and the ingest server. OBS describes dropped frames as a sign of an unstable connection or one that cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; see OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide.
- OBS is still streaming, but the source is blank: check the source type, its path or URL, and its playback settings.
- OBS reports dropped frames or loses connection: troubleshoot network and output settings separately from the media source.
- The stream stopped at YouTube: check the broadcast’s current state in YouTube Studio before attempting to resume.
These branches apply most directly to OBS’s built-in Media Source and VLC Video sources. A browser source, camera, or third-party source may have different recovery controls.
Recover a built-in Media Source
Verify the media can still load
- In OBS, select the scene containing the source and open the source’s properties.
- Confirm the local file path or media URL is still correct and accessible. If the file was moved, renamed, disconnected, or is no longer available, restore it or select the correct media before relying on the scene.
- Test playback in OBS and verify that the preview shows the expected video. Do this before going live if possible.

- Restart playback when source becomes active restarts playback when the source becomes active in the current scene. This controls media playback; it does not restart stream output.
- Loop repeats the file when playback reaches its end.
- Close file when inactive unloads the file while the source is hidden or absent from the current scene. OBS cautions that a short period without video may occur while the file reloads after the source is shown again. Leave this off if that reload delay is unacceptable, or account for the delay when bringing the source back.
These settings address playback and visibility behavior, not every possible file, codec, URL, or third-party source failure.
Recover a VLC Video source
VLC Video is a distinct OBS source type, not the built-in Media Source. OBS says VLC must be installed for the source to appear, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If the source or playlist is not available, check that dependency and confirm the media entries are valid. VLC’s playlist loop and visibility behavior are not identical to the built-in Media Source controls, so do not assume that the same settings or recovery sequence apply. If OBS lost its connection to YouTube
When OBS reports dropped frames or intermittent disconnections, work on the output path rather than the source playback controls. OBS’s troubleshooting guide, dated 2024-09-30, states: “If you experience dropped frames or intermittent disconnections while streaming, there is a network issue between your computer and the remote stream ingest server.”
- Test another ingest server or streaming service to help determine whether the issue is specific to the current destination.
- Lower the output bitrate if it exceeds what your upload connection can sustain reliably.
- Consider dynamically changing bitrate during congestion only as a trade-off: it may reduce quality and does not fix the underlying network cause.
- Check whether security software or a VPN is affecting the connection.
OBS’s overview lists automatic reconnect among streaming controls, but that feature concerns the stream connection; it does not restart a failed media source. Conversely, “Restart playback when source becomes active” is not a stream reconnect setting. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.

Check YouTube before trying to resume
After an output interruption, inspect the current broadcast in YouTube Studio rather than assuming that pressing Start Streaming will restore the same broadcast. OBS’s YouTube integration text warns that an auto-stopped broadcast cannot be reconnected and includes a message for when YouTube is not receiving stream data. The text does not establish a universal reconnect time window; the available workflow can depend on broadcast configuration. What to record if the problem persists
For a problem that does not fit these branches, capture an OBS log and note the exact source type, OBS version, error text, and YouTube broadcast state. Those details help distinguish a local file or source failure from an output connection problem or a stopped broadcast. The controls documented for Media Source and VLC Video should not be treated as a universal repair for browser, camera, or third-party sources.
