Lower your encoder’s video bitrate first. That directly reduces the data your stream sends upstream; if you need to cut more, test a lower output resolution or frame rate and check the resulting picture and stream health. Snowfall has fine, constantly moving detail, so judge the actual stream rather than assuming a low-motion scene will compress easily.

Which settings reduce your outgoing bandwidth?

The encoder’s video bitrate is the first control to adjust. Bitrate is the amount of encoded video data sent each second: lowering it reduces outgoing traffic, but may make snow look less detailed or introduce compression artifacts.

If reducing bitrate is not enough, try lowering output resolution or frame rate. Fewer pixels or frames reduce encoding and upload demands, but can soften the image or make falling snow look less smooth. There is no established bitrate that guarantees acceptable quality for every snowstorm video or connection.

How to choose and test a lower bitrate

  1. Check YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Its live encoder settings list recommended rates by resolution, frame rate, and codec. For H.264, the cited guidance lists 4 Mbps for 240p–720p at 30 fps, 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommendations for the listed settings, not a snow-specific quality threshold; check YouTube’s table for the current values before configuring a stream.
  2. Use a stable rate and the recommended keyframe interval. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval in its encoder guidance. Follow the supported codec and RTMP/RTMPS requirements for your setup.
  3. Make small changes and evaluate representative footage. Test a section with active snowfall and the audio you plan to stream. Look for smeared flakes, blockiness, or loss of fine detail, and assess whether motion still looks acceptable.
  4. Check your sustained upload capacity. OBS troubleshooting guidance suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed when choosing a bitrate. Treat this as a troubleshooting starting point, not a universal rule: other household uploads and connection fluctuations can reduce what is actually available to the stream.
  5. Monitor stream health during a test. If the connection cannot sustain the configured rate, OBS advises lowering video bitrate. OBS also describes dynamically changing bitrate as a congestion workaround that lowers quality, not a fix for the underlying network problem. See OBS connection troubleshooting.

How much data does a 24/7 livestream use?

A bitrate gives you a useful estimate of outgoing data over time. At a constant 1 Mbps, the calculation is 1,000,000 bits per second × 86,400 seconds in a day ÷ 8 bits per byte ÷ 1,000,000,000 bytes per decimal GB: about 10.8 decimal GB in 24 hours, before protocol overhead. At 4 Mbps, the same calculation gives about 43.2 decimal GB per day before overhead.

These are arithmetic estimates based on a sustained configured bitrate, not measured traffic or a YouTube guarantee. Actual traffic can differ because of bitrate behavior and protocol overhead.

Does YouTube transcoding reduce the data you send?

No. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into different output formats so viewers can watch on different devices and networks. That can give viewers quality options, but it does not reduce the encoder’s configured upstream ingest rate. To cut the data sent from your streaming setup, lower the encoder bitrate. OBS explains the viewer-side format options in its transcoding overview.

Common problems and fixes

  • The stream drops or reports connection trouble: Your connection may not sustain the configured bitrate, or other uploads may be using capacity. Lower the video bitrate and test again while monitoring stream health.
  • The snow looks blocky or loses detail: The bitrate may be too low for the motion and detail in the footage. Raise it if your upload connection can sustain the increase, or compare a higher output resolution or frame rate only if the current picture warrants the extra data.
  • Changing viewer quality options did not lower your upload use: Viewer transcoding creates playback formats; it does not change your encoder’s send rate. Reduce the configured output bitrate instead.
