Then inspect the outgoing audio format and bitrate, Castr’s selected transcoder track (if you use transcoding), and finally test YouTube playback separately. Comparing Castr’s preview with a private or unlisted YouTube test helps narrow down where the audio disappears.
1. Check that your encoder is capturing audio
Start at the source: Castr can only pass along audio that the encoder sends it. In OBS, open Settings → Audio and make sure at least one relevant device is enabled. Castr gives Desktop Audio and Mic/Auxiliary Audio as examples. Confirm the intended input is active and that its audio meter responds when sound is present. Castr’s audio requirements guidance covers this setup.
- If viewers should hear your computer’s audio, check that the correct desktop device is selected and active.
- If viewers should hear a microphone, confirm the intended microphone is enabled and receiving a signal.
- If the encoder’s meter does not move, troubleshoot the device or source in the encoder before changing Castr or YouTube settings.
A USB microphone may be appropriate if your setup has no suitable audio input, but buying one will not fix a disabled OBS track or an incorrect Castr track selection.
2. Check the encoder’s outgoing audio settings
Next, verify that the encoder is sending an audio track in a format Castr’s published guidance recommends. Castr’s general encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 and prefers 128 Kbps audio. Its social-platform guide recommends AAC-LC, 128 Kbps stereo, and 48 kHz as general best practices. These are operating recommendations, not a guarantee that every source or workflow requires exactly the same settings.

Castr’s guides do not establish one best sample rate for every source and encoder workflow. The 48 kHz recommendation comes from its social-platform guide; the separate prerecorded-video guide recommends 44.1 kHz for YouTube/Facebook. Avoid treating those distinct recommendations as a universal specification. See the social-platform guidance, Castr’s encoder configurations, and its recorded-video settings.
3. Inspect Castr’s preview and transcoder track
Use Castr’s preview or input-health view to check whether audio reaches Castr before the stream goes to YouTube. Castr recommends checking input health during a test. If the preview is already silent, focus on the encoder’s capture and output settings.

If you use Castr transcoding or filter among multiple audio tracks, confirm that the selected track actually contains audio. Castr warns that choosing a track without audio makes the transcoder’s outgoing stream silent. Review Castr’s transcoding guidance alongside the track selection in your setup.
4. Test YouTube playback separately
Once you have confirmed that audio reaches Castr, test the destination with a private or unlisted YouTube stream and listen to playback there. Castr’s test guidance recommends testing the actual destination in private or unlisted mode while monitoring input health. Its YouTube connection guide describes connecting through its API or a YouTube streaming server/key.

- Start a test stream and check that Castr receives audio.
- Use a private or unlisted YouTube event so you can check the destination without making a public broadcast.
- Listen to the YouTube playback and compare it with Castr’s preview.
- If Castr’s preview has sound but YouTube playback does not, review the YouTube destination connection and repeat the test. This narrows down the problem but does not by itself identify one definite cause.

5. Read stream-health indicators carefully
Check Castr’s stream-health charts, including audio bitrate, rather than relying on stable video as evidence that audio is working. Castr notes that a destination may reject a stream with no audio track or no video track. A stable video feed does not establish that a usable audio track is reaching YouTube. When a silent track is—and is not—a fix
If a video-only source, such as an IP or security camera without a microphone, needs an audio track for platform compatibility, Castr suggests adding a silent AAC track or relaying through an encoder with an audio source. Silence can satisfy an audio-track requirement in some cases, but it is not a fix when viewers need to hear speech, music, or other program audio. Social platforms may reject streams with no audio track or display an error.
For audio-only programming intended for YouTube, Castr says to combine the audio with a visual element—such as a static image, looping video, or visualizer—through an encoder. Castr’s embed player has different limitations and can handle video-only and audio-only streams; do not assume that behavior applies to YouTube. Details are in Castr’s social-platform audio guidance.
