The viewport determines the responsive layout; fullPage determines how much of the document the screenshot includes. They are separate settings.
Capture a full page at a chosen viewport
This runnable JavaScript example uses Playwright’s Chromium browser. The 1440 × 900 viewport is an example, not a Playwright default; replace it with the dimensions you need.

}Run it in a project with Playwright installed, for example by saving it as screenshot.mjs and running node screenshot.mjs. The output file is written to the current working directory. The official Page API documents the screenshot options, and the screenshots guide shows the full-page workflow.
What viewport and full-page mode each control
- Viewport: the browser’s CSS-pixel width and height used to lay out the page. It affects responsive breakpoints and therefore the appearance of the captured page.
fullPage: true: captures the full scrollable page instead of only the currently visible viewport. It does not set or change the viewport dimensions.
Set the viewport before navigation when you want the page to load and render at that size. A full-page screenshot is effectively the page’s scrollable content captured as a tall image, not a promise that every site-specific element or remote asset has finished loading.

Adjust the viewport or capture extent
Choose the viewport before opening the URL
Set viewport when creating the page, as in the example. Choose dimensions that match the layout you want to inspect. For an existing page, Playwright also provides a viewport-setting API; configure it before capture, and preferably before navigation if the intended size should affect initial responsive layout.
Capture only what you need
Use fullPage: true for the entire scrollable page. If the target is a particular element or a bounded region, use a locator screenshot or the screenshot API’s clip option instead. Those approaches avoid producing an unnecessarily tall image when the full document is not required; see the Page API for their options.

Save a file or keep the image buffer
Providing path writes the screenshot to a file. If you omit path, page.screenshot() returns the image buffer, which you can pass to other code or save yourself.
Handle content that appears only after scrolling
Full-page capture sets the screenshot extent; it does not guarantee that a site’s lazy-loaded images or sections have been activated. If content is loaded only when it approaches the viewport, scroll through the relevant areas and wait for the content to appear before taking the screenshot. The exact trigger and wait condition depend on the site.

After capture, inspect the image for missing content, unexpected responsive layout, and sticky or fixed elements that may appear differently in a tall capture. These are practical checks rather than guarantees of the screenshot option.
Common problems and fixes
