First check whether the black screen is in OBS’s preview or program output, or only on the streaming platform. If OBS itself is black, verify that the intended source is in the scene, visible, pointed at the right target, and supported by your operating system and version. A correct OBS preview with a black remote stream is a different problem; the capture checks below do not establish its cause.
Start by locating where the picture disappears
Look at OBS’s preview or program output before changing settings. Then identify what the nature scene is meant to show: a media file or loop, a live camera or capture card, or a computer display or application. Display Capture is only one possible source type; it is not the right fix for every black ambience scene.
- OBS preview is black: Check the scene, source visibility, source properties, target selection, and operating-system support.
- OBS preview looks right but the platform is black: Capture-source troubleshooting does not establish why delivery is failing. Diagnose the platform/output path separately rather than assuming a scene-capture change will solve it.
Check the scene and source first
- Choose the scene containing the nature stream. In the Sources list, confirm the intended video, camera, capture device, or screen-capture source is present.
- Confirm the source is visible. Make sure its visibility is enabled and that it is not obscured by another source above it in the scene.
- Open the source properties. If the source captures a display, window, or application, select the intended target. For a media file or external video input, check that source’s own selected file or device instead; screen-capture instructions do not diagnose those source types.
- Match the source to your platform. OBS’s capture-source options and supported targets differ across Windows, macOS, and Linux. Use the branch below for the operating system and version actually installed.
OBS’s official sources guide describes the different capture-source types and platform support.
Use the right screen-capture source for your operating system
Windows
Windows provides Display Capture. If you are capturing a window or application, ensure that the selected target is the one showing the intended content. A blank or wrong target can make the capture source look black even while the content is visible elsewhere.

Windows laptop with hybrid graphics
On some laptops, OBS and the display may be assigned to different GPUs. OBS Project’s Laptop Troubleshooting guide, published June 12, 2021, says its newer display-capture method is available with OBS 27 or later and Windows 10 version 1903 or later. It recommends trying the automatic method first, then manually selecting the Windows 10 capture method if automatic selection does not work. The guide also recommends keeping OBS on the default high-power GPU and reverting a prior power-saving GPU change.
- Check your installed OBS and Windows versions against those stated requirements; the guide is from 2021, so settings and labels may differ on newer installations.
- Try the automatic capture method first.
- If it fails, open the Display Capture source’s properties and try the Windows 10 capture method if that option is available.
- If you previously changed the GPU assignment for power saving, restore OBS to the default high-performance GPU setting and check the preview again.
macOS
OBS documents macOS Screen Capture for macOS 13 and later. It can capture a display, one window, or visible windows of a selected application. The older Display Capture source is listed for macOS 10.15 through 12.6 and is marked deprecated from macOS 13 onward. Select the source intended for your installed macOS version, then verify that its display, window, or application target is correct. See OBS’s macOS Screen Capture Guide and Display Capture Sources documentation.

Linux
OBS lists XSHM and PipeWire capture methods for Linux; PipeWire requires Wayland. Choose a source method compatible with your session rather than applying Windows or macOS steps. OBS documents these options in its Display Capture Sources guide.
Check for OBS capturing itself
If the preview shows an endless tunnel of repeated OBS windows, that is the Video Feedback Effect, not a black-screen symptom. It occurs when OBS captures the display on which its own window is visible. The OBS Project’s Video Feedback Effect guide, published November 25, 2023, recommends minimizing OBS; it also documents ways to hide the OBS window from capture on Windows and macOS 13 or later. On macOS 13 or later, hiding the window requires a macOS Screen Capture source in Display Capture mode.

If OBS looks correct but the stream platform is black
A correct OBS preview means the scene is rendering locally, but it does not prove that the receiving platform is receiving or displaying that output correctly. The OBS capture guidance above does not establish a platform-side cause or remedy. Keep this separate from a black OBS preview and consult documentation for the specific platform and output path before changing encoder, bitrate, ingest, or account settings.
Common symptoms and next checks
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Only the OBS preview is black | Confirm the scene contains the intended source, it is visible, and its properties point to the correct file, device, display, window, or application. |
| Display or application capture is black on macOS | Check the macOS version, choose the source appropriate to it, and verify the selected target. |
| Display capture is black on a Windows laptop | Check the OBS and Windows versions and try the capture-method and GPU checks in the laptop section. |
| OBS shows repeated, nested copies of itself | Stop capturing the display with OBS visible; minimize or exclude OBS as documented for your platform. |
| OBS preview is correct, but the remote stream is black | Treat it as a separate delivery/platform issue; the screen-capture guidance here does not identify the cause. |
