A busy disk might matter if OBS is recording locally or reading video files from that disk, but disk activity alone does not prove it is causing viewers’ YouTube stream to buffer. Check what the disk is doing, then compare the timing with OBS’s rendering, encoding, and network indicators, YouTube stream health, and your outbound upload capacity. YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not specify a minimum disk speed for live streaming.

First, distinguish local disk work from viewer-side buffering

OBS may be writing a local recording, reading media-source files, or doing other work on the disk while the stream is live. Those activities make storage worth investigating if they coincide with the symptom. But a disk that is busy at the same time as viewer buffering is not, by itself, evidence of cause: the reviewed YouTube guidance does not establish that a busy disk generally causes playback buffering or prescribe a minimum disk throughput.

Keep three observations separate: what the local disk is doing, which OBS performance counter changes, and what YouTube reports about the incoming stream. Also ask viewers whether the problem occurs for everyone or only on a particular device or connection.

Check the disk workload and local recording

  1. Identify the disk activity. Check whether OBS is recording an archive, using another recording workflow such as Replay Buffer, or reading media files from the disk that is busy.
  2. Match the timing. Note whether disk activity rises and falls when the reported buffering starts and stops. Treat a match as a clue to test, not a diagnosis.
  3. If recording, inspect the archive. Confirm that the recording is being written to the expected destination, that its file size continues to grow during the session, and that the resulting file is intact. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends checking local archive integrity and file growth; that advice does not prove disk load is causing viewer buffering.
  4. Check available disk space. OBS exposes disk-space information alongside its performance indicators. Make sure the recording destination has space for the workload.
  5. Isolate the workload where practical. If local recording is active, compare a representative stream with local recording disabled. If the symptom changes, investigate that recording workflow and destination; do not assume that the result establishes a general disk-speed requirement for streaming.

Read OBS’s counters before choosing a fix

OBS distinguishes frames missed due to rendering lag, frames skipped due to encoding lag, and network-dropped frames. Observe which counter rises while the problem occurs. Each points to a different diagnostic path; none is a disk-speed meter.

Network dropped frames rise and the connection indicator is yellow or red The connection to the streaming service may be unstable or unable to keep up with the configured bitrate. OBS says it may drop frames to compensate. Test outbound upload speed, check YouTube stream-health messages, and compare total stream bitrate with available upload capacity. See OBS Help Portal and YouTube’s streaming tips.
Frames missed due to rendering lag rise OBS may not be rendering frames in time; rendering or GPU load is a relevant path to inspect. Review OBS scene and rendering load, then consult OBS encoding performance troubleshooting. Rendering lag alone does not establish a storage problem.
Frames skipped due to encoding lag rise Encoding performance may be insufficient for the current workload or settings. Inspect encoder load and settings using the OBS performance guidance. Do not infer disk speed from this counter alone.
A local recording stalls, fails an integrity check, or stops growing as disk activity spikes The recording or storage workflow deserves investigation. Check its destination, free space, file growth, and whether the issue persists without local recording. YouTube recommends checking archive integrity and growth in its encoder settings guidance.
Broadcaster-side indicators look stable, but viewers still report buffering Viewer connection or device, playback conditions, or stream latency may be involved. Gather details from affected viewers and review YouTube latency settings. YouTube notes that lower latency may mean more playback buffering in its live stream settings guidance.

Test upload capacity and connection stability

A stable local disk does not rule out a network problem. YouTube says the total streaming bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. It also recommends testing upload bitrate: download speed can be higher than upload speed, and shared network use or connection disruptions can affect a live stream.

  1. Run a speed test that measures outbound upload, ideally under network conditions similar to the live session.
  2. Compare the measured upload capacity with the total configured stream bitrate. Leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom rather than planning to use all available upload bandwidth.
  3. Check OBS’s network dropped-frame counter and connection indicator at the same time as YouTube’s stream-health messages.
  4. If other devices or applications are using the connection, test whether their activity overlaps with the drops. A speed result from a quiet network may not represent the capacity available during a busy broadcast.

Check the live encoder settings against YouTube’s guidance

YouTube’s recommended live-ingestion bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are its H.264 live recommendations, not disk-write requirements. YouTube’s help pages are subject to change, so check the current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions when configuring a stream.

H.264 output YouTube-recommended live bitrate
720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

The same YouTube guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 options, supports up to 60 fps, and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, no more than 4 seconds. Settings depend on the selected codec and output. Test with movement and audio representative of the real stream, then monitor stream health; a static test may not reveal behavior under the actual workload.

When an SSD is—and is not—a sensible next step

An external SSD may be worth considering if you have established that the local recording destination or disk-based media workflow is struggling. The evidence here supports checking archive integrity, file growth, and available space; it does not establish a required drive speed, test a particular model, or show that buying an SSD fixes YouTube playback buffering. If OBS’s network counter is the signal that rises, investigate the connection rather than buying storage on that evidence alone.
