If FFmpeg is sending one prerecorded file to YouTube Live and the stream stalls when that file ends, first check whether FFmpeg has reached input end-of-file. For a single file you want to repeat indefinitely, try FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 input option before the matching -i. If FFmpeg keeps emitting packets through the boundary, investigate YouTube’s stream health, encoder settings, and network/output logs instead.

First, determine whether FFmpeg stops at the file boundary

A buffering spinner alone does not identify the cause. The file may have ended, FFmpeg may be pausing while it loads the next playlist item, the output may have failed, or YouTube may be reporting an ingest or configuration issue. Treat end-of-file as the first hypothesis, not a confirmed diagnosis.

  1. Watch FFmpeg’s process and log as the file ends. Does the process exit, report end-of-file, or stop producing frames and packets? That points toward input continuity or sequencing.
  2. Check whether output packets continue. If FFmpeg remains alive and continues writing packets through the boundary, the source may not be the problem; inspect output errors and YouTube’s incoming-stream status.
  3. Read YouTube’s stream-health and configuration messages. Use the actual issue reported in Live Control Room or the Live Streaming API rather than inferring a cause from the player.
  4. Compare the timestamps around the boundary. A pause or discontinuity when a new file begins suggests a playlist or timestamp issue rather than a simple single-file EOF.

Loop one file continuously with FFmpeg

FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as infinite looping. It is an input option, so place it before the -i for the file it applies to.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv "$YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL"

This is an illustrative command, not a tested recipe for every file, FFmpeg build, or channel. Replace the output URL with the ingestion details from your YouTube Live Control Room. Protect the stream key: do not publish it, paste it into a public log, or include it in a report. Select encoding options for your source and ensure your upload connection can sustain the chosen bitrate.

Why this placement matters

Options placed before an input apply to that input. In the example, -stream_loop -1 comes before -i input.mp4, telling FFmpeg to repeat that input indefinitely. If you have multiple inputs, verify that the option is positioned for the intended file.

If you are playing several files in sequence

A single-file loop does not automatically solve transitions between different files. Check how the playlist or concat input is assembled, whether the next file is available without a loading pause, and whether the files’ stream parameters and timestamps are compatible. The right correction depends on how your sequence is constructed; do not assume that adding a loop option fixes a playlist boundary.

Check YouTube’s ingest settings and stream health

YouTube’s Live Streaming API exposes whether a stream is active, its health status, and configuration issues. Live Control Room health messages can help distinguish an ingest configuration problem from an input boundary problem. If the message identifies an encoder or stream configuration issue, fix that issue rather than changing input-looping or output-recovery options at random.

Verify codec, bitrate, and keyframe cadence

  • Use a supported ingest codec and constant bitrate (CBR). These are among YouTube’s encoder recommendations.
  • Set the keyframe interval to two seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Choose bitrate for the actual resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s recommended bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult its current settings table for the profile you are sending rather than relying on one generic number.
  • Make sure upload capacity can sustain the selected bitrate. A connection that cannot maintain the outgoing stream can cause problems even when the input loops correctly.
  • Test with representative audio and motion, then monitor stream health and messages. A test using the actual kind of content you plan to send is more informative than checking only a static or silent segment.

Use FFmpeg FIFO recovery only for output failures

FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can attempt recovery after an output failure, but it addresses output continuity—not an input file that has ended. Use it only when logs point to an output or network failure.

  • Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
  • 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
  • Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
  • USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
  • Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity

FIFO queue behavior involves a trade-off: if the queue fills, FFmpeg can block the encoder; configuring packet dropping avoids that blocking but omits packets. Dropping packets is therefore not a fix for source EOF, and it may sacrifice content continuity. Diagnose the failure first, then choose the recovery behavior that fits it.
