Install VLC with the same 64-bit architecture as OBS. In OBS’s output settings, choose a supported video codec, set rate control to CBR, use a 2-second keyframe interval, and match the bitrate to YouTube’s recommendation for your resolution and frame rate. Then test the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and monitor stream health; looping a playlist does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming.
Build the playlist source in OBS Studio
Use VLC Video Source for multiple files
-
Install VLC for Linux. OBS’s VLC Video Source requires VLC to be installed and available to OBS; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
-
In OBS, select the scene for the stream. In the Sources panel, click + and choose VLC Video Source. If VLC Video Source is not offered, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
-
Add the local video files to the source’s playlist, arrange them in the desired order, and enable Loop Playlist. Test the complete playlist before relying on it for an extended stream.

If you change scenes, review the source’s Visibility Behaviour. The documented default is to stop playback when the source is not visible and restart it when visible. A scene switch can therefore interrupt or restart playlist playback unless the behavior suits your setup.
OBS describes VLC Video Source as similar to Media Source, with playlist support and extended playback support through VLC libraries. OBS lists formats such as MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM for video, and MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV for audio. A listed container or format does not guarantee that every file will play correctly: playback also depends on the codecs and playback stack available on your Linux system, so test the actual files.
Use Media Source for one repeating file
For a single video rather than a playlist, add OBS’s ordinary Media Source, select the file, and enable its Loop control. Use VLC Video Source when you need a list of media items; use Media Source Loop when one file is all you need.
Set YouTube-compatible video and audio output
For standard RTMP or RTMPS ingest, follow YouTube’s current live encoder settings. Select CBR rate control and a video codec supported by YouTube (H.264, H.265, or AV1), and configure audio as AAC or MP3. YouTube’s recommended keyframe frequency is 2 seconds, and the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. For SDR, YouTube specifies Rec. 709. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport to its servers.

- 4K60 Capture: Record in cinematic quality with crisp detail and vivid colors

- HDR10 Support: Capture brilliant HDR content with tone mapping on Windows
- Cross-Platform Compatible: Works with PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and more
- Analog Audio In: Capture in-game chat or commentary with 3.5mm input
Choose bitrate for the actual resolution, frame rate, and codec
The following are YouTube Help’s recommended H.264 ingestion bitrates, not measurements of what a particular Linux computer or internet connection can sustain. YouTube publishes separate tables for AV1 and H.265, so use the row for the codec you actually select.
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 34 Mbps |
Match the bitrate to the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. Leave upload headroom rather than using all of your connection’s capacity for the stream; YouTube advises checking upload capacity and testing before going live. YouTube transcodes incoming streams into multiple viewing formats, but that does not compensate for an unstable or incorrectly configured source stream.
Choose the ingest protocol you are actually using
RTMP or RTMPS
For a standard OBS-to-YouTube setup, use RTMPS when available for encrypted transport. Apply the CBR, codec, bitrate, keyframe, and color-space settings appropriate to this ingest path.
HLS is a separate output configuration
Do not copy HLS-specific requirements into an ordinary RTMP or RTMPS setup. YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies 1–4 second segments, TS segment format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. YouTube lists OBS among encoders that support HLS output. HLS has distinct requirements and higher latency than the standard RTMP-style setup.

Test and monitor before leaving a stream running
-
Play representative files and check both picture and sound, including sections with movement and audio. Confirm that the playlist advances and loops as intended.
-
Check that your upload connection can sustain the bitrate you selected, with headroom. YouTube Help’s encoder guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
-
Start a test stream and confirm in YouTube Live Control Room that the expected picture and sound arrive. Review YouTube’s stream-health status and messages while the stream is running.
-
For a long-running broadcast, keep monitoring the stream and the Linux system and network that feed it. A looping source handles repeated playback; it does not establish end-to-end uptime, and YouTube’s testing guidance does not promise uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
