This keeps content playing only while OBS, the computer, power, and network remain available. It does not automatically take over when those fail. For encoder redundancy, configure and test a separate backup encoder in YouTube Studio.
Choose the fallback that covers the failure you expect
A looping source addresses a content-playback problem, such as the main program ending or needing to be replaced with an emergency message. It does not restart a crashed computer, restore a lost internet connection, or replace a failed encoder. YouTube documents backup encoders and HLS backup ingestion, but the cited guidance does not describe a native YouTube feature that automatically substitutes a local emergency playlist when the live program disappears.

Prepare emergency media before configuring OBS
Choose short, appropriate material
Use media you have the rights to broadcast. An emergency message, slate, or suitable channel content can be less confusing than silence or a blank screen. These are editorial choices, not technical guarantees. Keep the files on the OBS computer, and open each one before the test to confirm its picture and audio play as intended.

Decide how the playlist should behave
For one clip, choose a predictable loop. For several files, decide whether they should play in a fixed order or shuffle. A fixed sequence is generally easier to review when the fallback includes instructions or emergency messaging. Verify that the playlist contains the intended files and that each can play through.
Build the loop in OBS
- Open OBS and select the scene where the fallback should appear. Keep it separate from the normal program scene if that makes activation clearer for the operator.
- For one file: in the Sources panel, select + > Media Source, create or select a source, choose the local file, and enable Loop. OBS’s Media Source supports local media playback; consult the OBS Media Sources guide for source details.
- For a multi-file list: select + > VLC Video, add the prepared files to its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. Install VLC first; its bitness must match OBS. Review the order or shuffle behavior before relying on it.
- Check the source in the OBS canvas and listen for audio. Confirm the image is framed correctly and that the loop returns to the beginning without an unintended blank or silent interval.
- Make activation operationally clear: decide who switches to the fallback scene or source and how they will know to do so. A looping playlist is a playback source, not a monitoring or automatic recovery system.
Connect OBS to the YouTube live stream
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream configured for an encoder. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain the setup at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio into the corresponding OBS streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it, and reset it in YouTube Studio if you believe it has been exposed.
- Start OBS early enough to inspect the incoming feed in Live Control Room. Check the preview, audio and video, then verify the published watch page—including on a mobile device—before treating the setup as ready.
- Keep YouTube’s streaming guidance in mind: use a reliable network and plan for 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream’s bitrate. That is YouTube’s operational recommendation, not a guarantee against outages. See YouTube Streaming tips.
Test the playlist and encoder fallback separately
- Rehearse switching to the fallback scene or source while the stream is live. Confirm the intended file or playlist appears and its audio is audible on the watch page.
- Rehearse switching back to the normal program, including who performs the change and how they confirm it worked.
- If using a backup encoder, configure it as a separate encoder path and test it under controlled conditions. YouTube’s stated failover test is to stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable, then make sure the player rolls over to the backup encoder. Do this as a planned test, not during an important broadcast; consult YouTube’s failover guidance.
- Write down the responsible operator, alert route, recovery procedure, and escalation contact somewhere accessible even if the streaming computer is unavailable. A playlist cannot bring a failed host or network back online.
Account for 24/7 stream limits
Do not assume a continuous broadcast will have complete rewind or an archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived in its encoder instructions. For streams longer than 12 hours, DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable, according to YouTube’s DVR guidance. These limits matter when designing fallback messaging or planning to review what happened during an extended stream.
