You can use a Synology NAS to store videos for a nonstop YouTube Live playlist, but Synology’s documented Surveillance Station Live Broadcast feature is for camera feeds—not stored video playlists. For files on your NAS, you need a separate playout process to read and loop or schedule the files, plus an encoder that sends the resulting stream to YouTube. YouTube supplies the stream URL and key; the NAS or another system must run that playout and encoding process.
Choose the right setup for your source
For stored video files
Use the NAS as media storage and run a separate playout-and-encoder process that can access those files and send a live signal to YouTube. That process might run on the NAS only if the specific model, DSM version, and software combination can sustain the workload. The sources available here do not establish a current Synology Container Manager or FFmpeg recipe, or which NAS models can encode continuously, so verify compatibility before building an unattended system.
For a live camera feed
Synology documents a different workflow: Surveillance Station’s Live Broadcast feature can send a selected camera stream to YouTube Live. It is not a documented player for NAS-stored playlists. Synology says YouTube Live requires H.264 video for this feature; confirm that the selected camera stream profile provides H.264. See Synology’s Live Broadcast help.
Prepare YouTube Live
-
Enable live streaming for the YouTube account if it is not already enabled. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

In YouTube Studio, create or select a live stream and obtain its server URL and stream key.
-
Enter the YouTube server URL and matching stream key in the encoder that will send the playout output. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, share it unnecessarily, or include it in screenshots or logs you distribute.
-
Start with a private or otherwise controlled test. Check the preview and stream health in YouTube Studio before making the broadcast public or leaving it unattended.

Build the NAS-file playlist workflow
1. Make the media accessible
Store the files on the NAS volume used by the playout process, or configure that process to access the appropriate NAS share. Confirm that the files are readable and that the process can continue accessing them after a restart. The exact share and package setup depends on the NAS model and software you choose.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →2. Configure playout separately from YouTube delivery
The playout component determines which file plays next and whether the sequence repeats or follows a schedule. The encoder takes that output and sends it to YouTube using the server URL and key from YouTube Studio. A NAS containing video files does not, by itself, create a live playlist stream.
3. Verify the complete chain before relying on it
-
Confirm the playlist advances and loops as intended, including after the final file.

Check rights and long-stream limits
Copyright and Content ID
Use only videos and audio that your channel has the right to stream. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt or terminate a stream if identified content remains. A licence alone may not prevent a block: the rights owner may also need to allowlist your channel through Content ID. Review YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and arrange any required allowlisting before going live.
Replay archives and DVR
YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream shorter than 12 hours, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. If the replay or rewind matters, plan around those limitations and keep your own recording. See the archive guidance and YouTube’s DVR guidance.
Choose between running it yourself and hosted playout
Self-host the playout and encoder
This approach keeps the source files on your NAS and gives you control over the playlist process, but it makes you responsible for verifying model and software compatibility, maintaining the encoder, providing continuous power and internet connectivity, and protecting the stream key. The evidence available here does not establish specific NAS performance, upload requirements for a given bitrate, or a supported current container recipe. Do not assume every Synology model can handle continuous encoding.

Use a hosted 24/7 service
YouTube lists Gyre as a hosted option for 24/7 streams of prerecorded video in its encoder guide. A hosted service is an alternative to running playout on your NAS, not a built-in Synology playlist capability. Compare where files are stored, how scheduling works, service cost, credential handling, rights obligations, and what happens if the provider or your internet connection is unavailable; the available sources do not establish comparative price, performance, or reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Surveillance Station Live Broadcast play a playlist stored on my NAS?
No. Synology’s documented Live Broadcast workflow selects a camera; NAS-stored files need a separate playout and encoder process.
Does the NAS have to be the encoder?
No. NAS files can be the source while a separate computer or hosted service runs playout and encoding. If you intend to run it on the NAS, verify the specific model and software can sustain the workload.
