You can run a continuous YouTube Live feed from an AWS Lightsail instance in Mumbai by sending an encoder’s output to the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room. The reliable setup is more than an encoder command: first confirm that the channel is eligible, choose a plan that can sustain the workload and transfer, protect the stream key, and supervise the process so it can restart after failure. Lightsail instances are burstable, so continuous video encoding must be validated on the instance you choose rather than assumed to work well on every plan.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, verified, and without a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Check the channel in YouTube Studio; a server cannot bypass an account restriction. YouTube’s live streaming eligibility guidance explains the requirements.
- A Linux Lightsail instance in the Mumbai region, selected with the encoder’s sustained CPU use and outbound transfer in mind.
- An encoder configured to send your video and audio to YouTube’s ingest URL. YouTube recommends RTMPS when supported. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
- A process supervisor or service manager configured to start the encoder at boot and restart it after failure, plus a way to monitor stream health, CPU, and data transfer.
This method is for sending an uploaded or otherwise available video source through an encoder; it does not make a camera workflow automatic. YouTube, the host, the network, or the encoder can interrupt a stream, so “always-on” means continuously operated and supervised, not guaranteed uninterrupted availability.
1. Confirm the YouTube channel can go live
- Open YouTube Studio for the channel that will own the broadcast and confirm live streaming is enabled.
- Check for account restrictions, including any live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Resolve an eligibility issue before configuring Lightsail.
- Review the planned content against YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Repeating content does not exempt a stream from copyright or other platform enforcement. YouTube’s Terms of Service and Community Guidelines apply to live streams as well.
2. Create a stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream. These are the encoder’s destination and credential; the key is not a public channel identifier.
- Store the key in a protected configuration file or secret store accessible only to the encoder account. Do not paste it into public scripts, shared logs, or shell commands likely to remain in history. Reset the key in Live Control Room if it is exposed.
Use RTMPS rather than unencrypted RTMP when your encoder supports it. YouTube specifically recommends RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP; this encrypts the ingest connection, but does not make a leaked stream key safe.
3. Choose a Mumbai Lightsail plan for sustained work
Lightsail plans bundle vCPU, memory, storage, and a transfer allowance. There is no single plan that can be called suitable for every stream without knowing the source, output settings, encoder, and sustained CPU load. AWS describes Lightsail instances as burstable and recommends EC2 for workloads that need consistently high CPU performance, including video encoding. See AWS’s Lightsail instance documentation. Treat a Lightsail encoder as a workload to test, not a guaranteed fit.

Estimate outbound transfer before buying
Estimate video transfer from the actual encoded bitrate and planned uptime:
Transfer in gigabytes ≈ bitrate in megabits per second × streaming seconds ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000.

- Quick Mute USB asmr microphone: A quick-mute button on the bottom is within easy reach, and you can instantly mute the mic even when you're concentrating on your game. When the microphone is muted, the RGB will be solid green; when the microphone is working, the RGB will resume gradient.
This uses decimal gigabytes. Add headroom for audio, protocol overhead, and reconnects, then compare the estimate with the current transfer allowance for the Mumbai plan. AWS says Mumbai plans include half the transfer allowance of plans in most other regions, and excess outbound transfer can incur charges. Check the current Mumbai plan terms at AWS Lightsail pricing; allowances and prices can change.
Validate CPU with the actual output
Higher output resolution or frame rate can increase the encoder’s workload, especially when it must encode rather than simply pass through compatible media. A simple low-resolution loop may need less CPU than a high-resolution live camera feed, but AWS has not published a benchmark establishing how either will perform on a particular Lightsail bundle. Test the exact source and settings on the instance before relying on it continuously; consider a compute option intended for sustained CPU demand if the instance cannot keep up.

4. Install and configure the encoder
Install an encoder appropriate to your Linux image and media source, then configure it with the YouTube server URL and stream key. The specific installation steps and command syntax depend on the image, encoder version, and input, so verify those against the relevant software documentation rather than copying an unverified command.
Set the output according to YouTube’s current guidance for your target resolution and frame rate. YouTube documents supported video and audio formats, bitrate guidance, constant-bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings page for the appropriate values; do not assume one bitrate fits every resolution and frame rate.

- Prefer RTMPS if the encoder supports it.
- Use constant bitrate and configure the keyframe interval as YouTube specifies for the selected output.
- Keep the stream key out of the visible command line where possible, as well as out of shell history and logs.
- Confirm that the encoded audio and video formats are supported and that the input plays through to the encoder as expected.
5. Set up network access safely
The encoder sends its feed outbound to YouTube. Lightsail firewalls allow outbound traffic, so the stream itself does not require opening an inbound port to the public internet. For administration, allow SSH only from the administrator’s known IP range instead of opening it to everyone. Lightsail’s IPv4 and IPv6 firewall rules are independent; if IPv6 is enabled, review its rules separately. See AWS’s Lightsail firewall documentation.
A static IPv4 address can help keep an administrative address stable, but it is not inherently required for sending an encoder feed to YouTube.

6. Make the encoder restart and verify the stream
- Configure a service manager or supervisor for the target Linux distribution to start the encoder on boot and restart it when it exits unexpectedly. Protect the service configuration because it may contain or reference the stream key.
- Start the service and check the encoder’s status and logs. Confirm that the process is running without exposing the stream key in diagnostic output.
- Open Live Control Room and check that YouTube receives the feed and reports healthy stream status. Verify both picture and audio, not just that the encoder process exists.
- Test a controlled encoder restart and confirm that the feed reconnects. YouTube recommends testing before streaming and monitoring stream health; see its encoder guidance.
- Monitor CPU utilization and transfer while the stream runs. Reassess the instance or output settings if CPU stays saturated, the feed becomes unstable, or transfer approaches the Mumbai plan allowance.
A boot-start service and restart policy help recover from process failures; they do not protect against every host, network, or YouTube interruption. Keep a way to check the instance and Live Control Room, and review logs after a reconnect.
Troubleshooting an always-on Lightsail stream
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube never receives the feed | Incorrect server URL or stream key, an encoder that is not running, or an unsupported output configuration. | Recheck the stream’s URL and key in Live Control Room, inspect the encoder’s status and logs, and confirm output settings against YouTube’s current supported formats. |
| The feed stops when the encoder exits | The process is not supervised, or its restart policy is missing or misconfigured. | Check the service manager’s status and logs. Configure boot startup and failure restart for the actual Linux image, then test a controlled restart. |
| The process runs but video is unstable | The instance may lack sustained CPU headroom, or output settings may exceed what it can encode reliably. | Check CPU use and stream health. Test a lower-demand output or use compute designed for sustained CPU workloads; Lightsail’s burstable instances are not a universal video-encoding guarantee. |
| Transfer use or charges rise faster than expected | Continuous output consumes data for every hour online; Mumbai plans have a lower included transfer allowance than plans in most regions, and excess outbound transfer may be charged. | Recalculate using the actual bitrate and runtime, include overhead, and compare with the current Mumbai allowance and pricing terms. |
| The encoder cannot reconnect after a drop | The encoder may have exited or failed to retry, or the stream configuration may no longer be valid. | Check process and service logs, verify the current stream URL and key, and confirm reconnection behavior in Live Control Room. A supervisor only restarts the encoder process; it does not guarantee YouTube will accept the feed. |
| SSH remains exposed despite an IPv4 restriction | IPv6 firewall rules are configured independently from IPv4. | Review both address-family rule sets and limit SSH ingress to the administrator’s IP range. |
