To run recorded classes continuously as a YouTube Live broadcast from a cloud server, create a YouTube stream, connect a cloud-hosted encoder using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio, and configure file playback to run at live speed and continue through your class library. The encoder must stay running on the server, and you need separate monitoring and restart handling: FFmpeg’s real-time input option paces playback, but does not by itself create a playlist or recover from every failure.
What you need before you begin
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and permission to create the event.
- Your recorded classes, stored where the cloud server or hosted service can access them.
- A cloud server and an operator comfortable installing and supervising software if you choose the self-managed FFmpeg route. No universal VM size or price can be specified without knowing the media, region, storage, and provider.
- A playlist or playback process that determines which recording plays next, plus monitoring and a way to restart a failed encoder.
Class files vary in codec, frame rate, audio tracks, aspect ratio, and duration. Test the actual files and playback configuration in a private or unlisted event before relying on a public schedule.
Create the YouTube Live stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Use the Stream tab for a new stream, or choose Manage → Schedule stream to schedule one.
- Set the title, visibility, and event details. YouTube offers public, private, and unlisted visibility choices.
- In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. Enter them into the encoder’s corresponding server and key fields; YouTube’s setup instructions say to provide both values to the encoder.
- Keep the key private. Put it in a protected configuration file or secret store accessible only to the streaming process; do not expose it in a public script or screenshot. If it is disclosed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the server configuration.
For a scheduled event, create it in Live Control Room before starting the encoder. Once the encoder connects, wait for YouTube’s preview and then click Go live.
Choose how to run the encoder
Self-managed FFmpeg on a cloud VM
With this route, you manage the server, files, encoding, playlist transitions, logs, and recovery. FFmpeg’s -re input option reads a file at its native frame rate; the FFmpeg documentation describes it as equivalent to -readrate 1 and useful when output packet timing matters, including live streaming. It controls pacing, not playlist scheduling, process supervision, or recovery from every interruption.

There is no safe universal command or instance size for an unspecified class library. Whether files can be sent without transcoding, or require conversion, depends on their media properties and your chosen output configuration. Check FFmpeg’s documentation and test the exact files and settings on a private or unlisted stream before scheduling a public broadcast.
Hosted prerecorded-video service
YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for continuous prerecorded-video streams. Gyre describes uploading files, arranging a looping playlist, connecting a YouTube account, and scheduling a stream. Its feature and plan details are vendor descriptions, not independent performance findings; check its current terms and limits directly before choosing it.

Connect the cloud server securely
- Configure the encoder with the stream URL and key copied from YouTube Live Control Room.
- Prefer RTMPS if your encoder supports it. Google describes RTMPS as RTMP carried through an SSL connection and documents YouTube’s ingest endpoint and application path, port 443, and hostname/SNI requirements.
- Use the address YouTube supplies rather than a copied endpoint from an older tutorial. The protocol, endpoint, and path must be valid; TLS authentication also depends on the server hostname being available through SNI.
- Restrict access to the stream key and server configuration. After a key change, update the encoder’s protected configuration before reconnecting.
Make playback continuous and monitor it
Separate pacing from playlist continuity
Real-time pacing controls how quickly a file is read; a playlist runner or other file-sequencing strategy determines what plays next. A system service manager or equivalent supervisor can restart a failed process, but that is a separate part of the deployment. Test transitions between classes, audio continuity, network interruptions, and process restarts rather than assuming a single-file playback test proves continuous operation.
Check both the server and YouTube
- Retain encoder logs and check that the process is running.
- Confirm that Live Control Room receives a healthy preview and that the encoder is connected to the intended event.
- For an API-based monitor, YouTube’s LiveStreams API documents stream health status and configuration issues. Such monitoring requires an implementation; it is not automatic simply because FFmpeg is running.
Plan recordings and YouTube archives separately
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a much longer continuous broadcast will become one complete automatically archived video. If preserving a complete class library matters, retain the source recordings independently or divide the schedule into shorter events, then check the resulting replays in the channel.

There is no universally specified VM size or cloud total cost for this task. Provider costs depend on bitrate, whether files need transcoding, region, storage, and outbound data pricing, so calculate against your own media and current provider rates.
