Use both prevention and recovery: schedule updates for a quiet window, arrange for the app to launch after sign-in (or use Task Scheduler where appropriate), then test the full restart and relaunch process on the actual PC.
Why an update can interrupt a 24/7 stream
Some Windows updates require a restart to finish installing. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ puts it plainly: “To finish installing an update, your device will need to restart.” Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ explains restart scheduling and temporary update pauses.
A restart ends the current streaming session. Whether the stream resumes depends on more than Windows: the computer must start, the required user session must be available, the streaming application must open and restore the right project or scene, and the app must reconnect to its streaming destination. Microsoft’s launch tools can start programs; they do not establish that a particular animation app can recover its previous live state.
Reduce the chance of an inconvenient restart
Set Windows Active hours
- Windows 11: Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours. Choose automatic adjustment or set the hours manually to cover the period when the stream must stay undisturbed.
- Windows 10: Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Change active hours.
Active hours help prevent routine update restarts while you are using the PC; they do not prevent every restart or guarantee uninterrupted streaming. The Windows Update FAQ also describes scheduling a restart and temporarily pausing updates. A pause is temporary, not a sustainable way to avoid updates indefinitely.

Account for Windows 11 update policy changes
Microsoft says that, on eligible Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1, some restart-requiring driver, .NET, and firmware updates released on or after July 28, 2026 are being combined with the monthly security update. Microsoft published this policy explanation on August 14, 2026, and says rollout is gradual; urgent updates can be exceptions, and delayed updates will not be held indefinitely. See Microsoft’s update restart guidance. Do not treat this policy as a promise that a PC will restart only once a month.
Check Windows 10 support status
Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. As of that date, Windows 10 no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. Check Microsoft’s Active hours and update guidance for the applicable details; do not rely on an unsupported system as an update-avoidance strategy.

Set the streaming app to launch after a restart
Use Startup apps for the simplest sign-in launch
- Open Settings > Apps > Startup and turn on the toggle for the streaming or animation application, if it appears.
- Alternatively, open Task Manager > Startup apps and enable the app there.
- If the app is not listed, Microsoft documents adding a shortcut to the current user’s Startup folder. Press Windows key + R, enter
shell:startup, and press Enter; place the app shortcut in the folder that opens. For all users, entershell:common startupinstead, subject to the permissions on the PC.
These methods launch programs when a user signs in, not simply because the computer has powered on. If Windows reaches the sign-in screen but nobody signs in, a visible desktop application may not start. Some streaming software also requires an unlocked, interactive desktop or manual authentication.

Use Task Scheduler when you need a specific trigger or retries
Task Scheduler can run programs at a chosen time or in response to an event. It offers more trigger and failure-retry control than a basic Startup entry, but setup depends on the application’s supported launch method and security requirements. Microsoft describes the service in About the Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler and create a task using a trigger appropriate to your setup, such as system startup or a sign-in event. Choose the trigger based on whether the app needs a user’s desktop session.
- Set the action to start the executable or supported launcher supplied by the app vendor. Use the vendor’s documented arguments and working directory if required; there is no safe universal command line for every streaming application.
- In the task’s settings, consider Start the task as soon as possible after a scheduled start is missed (the
StartWhenAvailablesetting) if it fits the task. Configure Restart the task if it fails only with a retry count and interval; Microsoft’s schema requires both forRestartOnFailure. - Save the task and test it with the intended account and permissions. Avoid selecting elevated privileges, storing credentials, or trying to run hidden unless the app vendor’s guidance and your security needs support that choice.

Do not mistake wake-from-sleep for reboot recovery
WakeToRun can wake a sleeping computer for a scheduled task, but that is not an update-reboot recovery feature. Microsoft notes that the display may remain off after the computer wakes. It does not establish that a visible stream will return after an update restart. See Microsoft’s WakeToRun documentation.
Test the entire unattended recovery path
Do not infer success from an app appearing in a startup list. Test the machine and the streaming application you intend to use:

- Install updates and allow the PC to restart during a planned maintenance window.
- Confirm whether Windows signs in automatically or stops at a sign-in screen. If the app needs an interactive desktop, verify that the required session is present.
- Check that the app opens with the correct account, animation project or scene, and audio/video settings.
- Verify that the network reconnects, the app reconnects to the streaming destination, and the stream is visibly live there—not merely showing an open application window.
- Separately close or stop the streaming app and confirm whether your Startup or Task Scheduler setup handles an application failure as intended.
Repeat the checks after changing the app, Windows account, task trigger, authentication method, or update policy. Windows documentation covers the operating-system launch mechanisms, not the behavior of a specific app’s project restoration or streaming reconnection.

Neither option is a substitute for confirming the app’s authentication, session, network, and live-output behavior after a real restart.
