In OBS Studio 30, add your local video to a scene as a Media Source and turn on Loop. To make it start only after OBS has connected to YouTube, begin on a separate holding scene, start the stream, then switch to the scene containing the video. Source playback and YouTube’s live status are separate: making a source visible starts its playback, but does not itself make the YouTube event live.

Set up one video to repeat

  1. Create or select a scene. In OBS, choose the scene that should display the video, or create one for it.
  2. Add the file. In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source. Name the source, select the local video file in its properties, and confirm. OBS lists common supported formats such as MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM; a particular file still needs to play correctly on your system. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
  3. Enable looping. Open the Media Source properties and check Loop. This makes the file play again after it reaches the end. OBS documents Loop as off by default.
  4. Choose its activation behavior. Keep the source visible in the scene. Check Restart playback when source becomes active if you want it to start from the beginning whenever it becomes visible. This is separate from Loop: Loop handles the end of playback; restart-on-activation handles showing the source again.
  5. Check the picture and sound. Confirm the source fits the OBS canvas, the expected audio is audible, and no other visible source covers it. Play through the end once to verify that it loops as intended.

For a source that should both repeat continuously and start over whenever it becomes visible, enable both Loop and Restart playback when source becomes active. OBS’s overview guide recommends arranging and testing scenes before streaming.

Use a playlist instead of one file

For several local files, add a VLC Video source rather than creating a separate Media Source for each item. VLC Video provides playlist, looping, and shuffle controls, and requires VLC to be installed. OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Its visibility behavior can also be configured for hidden sources. For a single video, Media Source is the simpler built-in choice. Details are in the OBS Media Sources guide.

Start the video after the stream connects

OBS starts media according to source visibility and activation; YouTube receives the encoded feed through the stream URL and key. Neither control is a substitute for the other. If you do not want the video’s opening to play while OBS is connecting, use a holding scene first:

  2. Configure OBS’s stream connection with the URL and stream key for the intended YouTube live event. YouTube’s live stream settings help covers managing those settings.
  3. Start streaming from the holding scene and wait for the YouTube preview and stream health to indicate that the feed is arriving.
  4. Switch to the scene with the looping video. If restart-on-activation is enabled, the source starts from the beginning when it becomes visible.

This holding-scene handoff follows from OBS’s source-visibility behavior and YouTube’s separate stream configuration; it is not a guarantee of when YouTube makes an event public. Check the event’s status in YouTube Live Control Room.

Match OBS output to YouTube Live

Use the stream URL and key supplied for your YouTube event in OBS’s streaming configuration. YouTube’s encoder recommendations are codec- and output-dependent, so choose a bitrate row that matches the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually use. The figures below are YouTube’s published recommendations, not guarantees of stream quality or stability. YouTube’s help page was checked October 3, 2026; it does not state a publication date.

Codec Output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
H.264 1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
H.264 720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 1080p30 4 Mbps 10 Mbps
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 720p30 2 Mbps 6 Mbps

In OBS, configure the stream encoder to use the codec and output you intend to send, then set its bitrate to the corresponding YouTube row. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codecs; H.264 is a broadly applicable option when your available OBS encoder supports it. YouTube recommends CBR bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. It lists AAC or MP3 for audio; its advanced stereo recommendations are 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. YouTube automatically detects resolution and frame rate by default in Live Control Room. For current details, see YouTube’s live encoder settings.

These examples cover 30 fps outputs only. If you choose another resolution or frame rate, consult YouTube’s current table rather than extrapolating a bitrate from these rows. Use an output your computer can encode and your connection can sustain.

Check bandwidth, test, and monitor

YouTube says your total outgoing stream bitrate must fit your available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Treat that as a recommended margin, not a measured guarantee for your connection. Before the event, test the complete setup with audio and movement similar to what you will stream. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages during the event; its streaming tips and encoder guidance explain these recommendations.

  • The local file plays through and repeats at its end.
  • The intended source is visible in the correct scene and its sound is present.
  • OBS’s codec, bitrate mode, keyframe interval, resolution, frame rate, and audio settings match the intended YouTube output.
  • YouTube’s preview receives the feed and reports healthy stream status before you switch away from the holding scene.
  • The scene switch starts playback when expected, and the upload connection has enough capacity for the configured outgoing bitrate.

Copyright and YouTube policy checks

Having a file on your computer does not establish that you have the rights needed to broadcast it. Before streaming, confirm that you have permission for the video, music, and other included material, and review YouTube’s applicable live-streaming and monetization policies. Repeating a video does not by itself establish that a channel meets monetization requirements. Policy outcomes depend on the content and channel; do not treat looping as a way around copyright or reused-content rules. YouTube’s live stream settings help is a starting point for event setup. StreamNeo also provides a copyright safety checklist.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Video plays once and stops Loop is off or was not applied to the active Media Source. Open that source’s properties, enable Loop, and test through the end of the file.
Video starts over unexpectedly The source became active again while restart-on-activation is enabled. Check whether a scene change or visibility toggle reactivated the source. Disable restart-on-activation if you do not want it to restart when shown.
Video starts before the stream is ready The video source is already visible when you start streaming. Begin on a scene without the media source, wait for YouTube’s preview and stream health, then switch to the video scene.
Playlist source is unavailable VLC may not be installed, or its architecture may not match OBS. Install VLC of the same architecture as OBS; OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. Recheck playlist and visibility settings.
YouTube reports poor or unstable stream health The outgoing bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity, or the output settings may not match the selected codec and target. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages, verify the matching encoder row and CBR setting, and test with more upload headroom. YouTube recommends 20% headroom.
Video is present but sound is missing or wrong The source audio may not be reaching the intended output, or the wrong audio settings are selected. Check OBS audio meters and monitoring/output routing, then verify that the YouTube preview includes sound before going live.
