Then check the PDF’s document properties for recorded metadata and review the pages themselves: metadata fields do not prove that the capture is complete or establish when the webpage was captured.
Save the webpage as a PDF
Print-to-PDF is the documented browser workflow for making a PDF copy of a webpage. Preview the output before saving because a page’s print layout can differ from how it appears on screen.
Firefox
- Open the webpage and choose Print to open print preview.
- Set Destination to Save to PDF.
- Review the preview. Adjust page range, orientation, paper size, scale, margins, and headers or footers as needed. Background printing and an Original or Simplified format may also be available.
- Save the PDF with a clear filename in a location you can find, then open it to check the result.
Mozilla notes that webpages may be designed to print differently from their screen presentation. Check the Firefox print guide for the current controls.
Microsoft Edge
- Open the webpage and choose Settings and more > Print, or use Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS.
- Review the available print settings and preview, then choose the PDF destination offered by your operating system or print setup.
- Save the file and reopen it to verify the pages.
Edge also documents printing from Immersive Reader where available, and opening a system print dialog. The exact destination and controls can depend on the operating system and print setup. See Microsoft’s Edge print instructions.

Chrome automation for repeatable captures
For scripted output, Chrome’s Headless command-line documentation gives this basic pattern:
chrome --headless --print-to-pdf https://example.com/To omit the printed date and time, URL, and page-number header or footer, add --no-pdf-header-footer. To wait up to five seconds before capture, add --timeout=5000; choose an appropriate wait for the page rather than assuming five seconds fits every site.
chrome --headless --print-to-pdf --no-pdf-header-footer --timeout=5000 https://example.com/These commands are for repeatable or automated output, not required for a one-off save. Consult the Chrome Headless documentation for command details.

Check the saved PDF’s content
Open the saved file in a PDF viewer and inspect the actual pages. Confirm that the intended content survived printing before relying on the file.
- Check that the expected page range and pagination are present.
- Read important text at normal viewing size and look for cut-off, overlapping, or missing material.
- Check that important images and tables rendered as expected.
- Follow relevant links if the PDF is meant to preserve them.
A title or creation date in a properties panel is a record associated with the PDF; it is not proof that all webpage content was captured, that the file is authentic, or that the stated date is when the webpage was viewed.
Inspect PDF document properties and embedded metadata
In Acrobat, open the PDF’s document properties and select Description to view basic properties. The documented route is Menu > Document properties on Windows and File > Document properties on macOS. Available fields can include title, author, subject, keywords, creation and modification dates, security settings, fonts, initial-view preferences, and custom fields.

- Open the saved PDF in Acrobat.
- Open Document properties using the menu path for your operating system.
- In Description, review the basic document properties.
- For a deeper inspection, open Additional Metadata > Advanced to view embedded metadata.
Some fields may be read-only depending on how the PDF was made. Editing a metadata field does not change the PDF’s page content. Adobe’s instructions are in Acrobat PDF properties and metadata.
The PDF specification describes two document-level metadata storage mechanisms: an optional document information dictionary and a metadata stream. That is why a deeper inspection may reveal embedded metadata beyond the basic properties view. The specification does not say that every PDF contains both mechanisms. See Adobe’s PDF Reference.

A file-system date, a PDF creation or modification field, and the date a webpage was captured are different things. Creation and modification fields report recorded PDF metadata; they do not independently establish capture time. Likewise, changing a displayed metadata date does not alter what the PDF shows.

Choose manual saving or automation
For an occasional PDF, browser print preview makes it straightforward to adjust layout and page settings before saving. For repeatable captures, Chrome Headless offers command-line controls such as omitting headers and footers and waiting before printing. The documented sources do not establish that one browser or method is universally faster or more faithful, so choose based on whether you need hands-on preview or a scriptable workflow.

Troubleshoot common PDF problems
Content is missing or cut off
Return to the browser’s print preview and check page range, scale, orientation, paper size, and margins. Print rendering can differ from the live webpage, so reopen the saved file and inspect the affected pages rather than relying only on the preview.
Background colors or images are absent
Check whether the browser offers a background-printing setting and enable it if the design depends on backgrounds. Review the preview again before saving.
The PDF has headers or footers you do not want
Turn off headers and footers in the browser’s print settings if the control is available. In Chrome Headless, --no-pdf-header-footer omits the date/time header, URL, and page-number footer.
The page is incomplete in an automated capture
The page may need more time to render. Chrome Headless supports --timeout=5000 to wait up to five seconds, but that value is not a guarantee for every page. Adjust the wait to suit the target site, then inspect the saved PDF’s pages and content.
A property is absent or cannot be edited
Available fields depend on how the PDF was created, and some may be read-only. Check Additional Metadata > Advanced for embedded metadata; do not assume that a missing basic field means the file has no other metadata.
Historical note on tagged PDFs
A July 29, 2020 Chromium Blog announcement said Chrome 85 would automatically generate tagged PDFs when a webpage was printed with Save as PDF. It described structural tags for items such as headings, lists, tables, paragraphs, and image descriptions. This is a dated, version-specific announcement, not evidence of current behavior across all browsers or versions. See the Chromium Blog announcement.
