If OBS warns “Encoding overloaded!” during a 24/7 YouTube stream, reduce OBS’s local workload first: lower the output resolution or frame rate, free GPU capacity, and simplify scenes. If x264 is maxing out the CPU, try a compatible hardware encoder; it may not help if the GPU is already the bottleneck. Check YouTube’s stream health and upload capacity separately—the warning alone does not diagnose a network problem or identify which component is saturated.

What “Encoding overloaded” means—and what it does not

OBS must render and composite scenes as well as encode video. If the system cannot keep up with that work, OBS may show “Encoding overloaded!” The cause could involve GPU rendering, CPU encoding, or another system bottleneck; the warning by itself does not identify which one. OBS Project’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide, dated June 12, 2021, advises leaving resources free for OBS when output is choppy or laggy.

Do not treat the warning as equivalent to YouTube’s stream-health or network messages. Encoding is the work your computer does; delivery is the outgoing connection and YouTube ingest. A stream can have one problem or both. Check OBS performance and YouTube stream health as separate parts of diagnosis.

Change OBS settings in this order

  1. Lower output resolution

In OBS, open Settings > Video and reduce Output (Scaled) Resolution. Lower output resolution can reduce GPU and encoder workload, at the cost of image detail. If the problem continues, use a lower output resolution that your system can sustain.

    • 850W 80+ GOLD POWER SUPPLY, 360MM LIQUID COOLING & WiFi 7 - An 850W 80 Plus Gold certified power supply provides stable, efficient power with headroom for future upgrades, while a 360mm AIO liquid cooler, WiFi 7, and an ARGB mid-tower case keep the Ryzen 7 CPU cool and connected in a clean build.
    • READY TO PLAY OUT OF THE BOX - Arrives fully assembled and tested with Windows 11 Home pre-installed, so your prebuilt gaming computer is ready to set up in minutes. Assembled in the USA, and backed by a one-year limited warranty and lifetime free technical support.

Keep Base (Canvas) Resolution unchanged if possible. OBS generally does not recommend lowering the canvas because it can complicate capture setup and asset layout; reserve that change for severe resource constraints.

  2. Reduce frame rate if necessary

In Settings > Video, lower Common FPS Values—for example, try 30 fps if 60 fps is not keeping up. A lower frame rate reduces rendering and encoding work but makes motion less smooth. Choose the best combination of detail and motion that your setup can sustain.

  3. Match the encoder to the saturated resource

If you are using x264 and CPU encoding is struggling, try a compatible hardware encoder. OBS generally recommends hardware encoders for performance because they use a specialized video-encoding component. Available options and compatibility depend on your hardware and operating system; OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV, and Apple VideoToolbox in its Hardware Encoding guide, dated January 11, 2022.

Hardware encoding is not a universal fix: OBS still needs GPU resources to render scenes, so moving encoding off the CPU may not help a GPU-bound system. OBS also notes that earlier hardware-encoder generations can produce lower quality at the same bitrate than x264’s default veryfast preset. Compare the output at your intended bitrate before settling on a change.

  4. Free GPU capacity and simplify scenes

    • Close other programs that use substantial GPU resources.
    • If you are gaming while streaming, cap an uncapped frame rate or enable V-Sync; lower game graphics settings if needed.
    • Remove unused or expensive sources and filters, and use source dimensions appropriate to the output.
    • Review browser sources, which can be resource-intensive. Sources may consume resources even when they are not visible.

OBS says running it as administrator can help in some Windows cases involving GPU overload. Treat this as a conditional troubleshooting step, not a general fix for every operating system or bottleneck.

Check YouTube delivery settings separately

After addressing OBS performance, check the encoder and connection settings for YouTube. YouTube’s Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Follow bitrate guidance for the codec you actually use rather than applying an H.264 figure to another codec.

YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include these examples. They are platform guidance, not a measurement of what your internet connection can reliably upload. The Help page displays no publication date; figures below are from guidance accessed October 3, 2026.

Output YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps
480p at 30 fps 3 Mbps

Test upload speed, run a representative pre-stream test with audio and motion, and monitor YouTube stream health during the broadcast. If YouTube reports delivery trouble, address the connection and ingest configuration; do not assume that changing bitrate alone will clear an OBS encoding-overload warning.

Plan for the risks of a 24/7 broadcast

A sustained stream needs a representative test on your own machine: performance depends on the computer, operating system, encoder, output workload, scene composition, and other running software. Watch OBS performance and YouTube stream health over a meaningful period rather than assuming a setting that works briefly will remain stable indefinitely. During the event, monitor audio and video quality and verify that any local archive file is continuing to grow.

There is also a YouTube archive limitation independent of OBS performance. YouTube Help’s Archive live streams guidance says, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” YouTube’s Turn on DVR on live streams guidance says DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If a replay matters, record locally as a backup and consider dividing the broadcast into shorter sessions; do not rely on one uninterrupted 24/7 stream being archived or fully rewindable.

Troubleshooting: match the symptom to the next check

OBS shows “Encoding overloaded!” or output is choppy OBS’s local rendering and encoding workload Lower output resolution or frame rate, identify whether CPU or GPU resources are constrained, and simplify scenes or close GPU-heavy programs.
x264 is struggling while GPU capacity is available CPU encoding load and compatible hardware encoders Try a supported hardware encoder and compare image quality at the intended bitrate.
OBS performance is acceptable, but YouTube reports stream-health or delivery problems Upload reliability, selected codec, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval Test the connection and confirm YouTube ingest settings match the chosen codec and output.
A long broadcast is missing as a replay, or viewers cannot rewind fully YouTube’s archive and DVR limits for streams over 12 hours Keep a local recording and consider shorter broadcast sessions if on-platform replay or rewind is important.
A local recording is expected but may have stopped Whether the archive file is still growing Check the file during the broadcast and monitor audio and video quality continuously.
