If the VPS must encode, resize, filter, add overlays, compose scenes, or run multiple streams, there is no defensible universal CPU or RAM figure: test the exact workload and size from its sustained resource use.
For a stream that runs continuously, also check outbound data limits. At 10 Mbps, a constant stream sends roughly 3.24 TB over 30 days before protocol overhead. A VPS can have enough RAM yet still fail the job because its CPU is constrained, its upload connection is unstable, or its plan does not include enough transfer.
What determines the VPS size?
YouTube does not publish a universal CPU or RAM requirement for the computer or VPS sending a live stream. Its encoder guidance specifies stream settings such as resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate—not a host-side vCPU or memory minimum. The key distinction is whether your server is merely transmitting prepared video or producing the video stream in real time.
| Workload | Planning guidance | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| One prerecorded file, already encoded at the target settings; FFmpeg mainly reads, loops, and transmits it | 1–2 vCPU and 1–2 GB RAM is a modest starting estimate, not a measured guarantee. | Confirm the command is not encoding unexpectedly. Monitor CPU and memory during a representative run, and check the provider’s sustained CPU and transfer limits. |
| Software encoding, resizing, filters, overlays, or scene composition | No universal vCPU or RAM figure is established. | Benchmark the exact resolution, frame rate, codec, encoder preset, audio, and filters. Allocate CPU that keeps encoding in real time with headroom; account for production software and buffers in RAM. |
| Several concurrent streams or outputs | Size from the combined measured workload; do not assume resource use scales linearly. | Test all outputs together and confirm CPU scheduling, memory, and outbound capacity under simultaneous load. |
These are planning estimates, not VPS benchmark results. A provider’s nominal vCPU count alone does not guarantee sustained performance if CPU time is shared or constrained. The fact that a stream runs for 24 hours a day does not, by itself, increase its encoding workload; it makes resource limits, network stability, and recovery more consequential.

Why looping a prepared file uses less CPU than encoding it
Playback and transmission
When the file already has the required video and audio format, the server can read it repeatedly and send it to YouTube. That is generally a lighter job than creating new encoded frames, but the actual load still depends on the software and command, media format, storage, and VPS allocation. Verify that your process is not silently converting, scaling, or filtering the video.
Encoding and production
Software encoding, resizing, filters, overlays, and scene composition require the server to do additional work. Codec, resolution, frame rate, encoder preset, and effects all matter, so a vCPU count copied from another person’s setup may not apply. Test the actual command and media for a sustained period; use enough CPU headroom to avoid falling behind real time, and monitor RAM for the operating system, media buffers, containers, and production tools.
Multiple streams
Concurrent outputs add both compute and network demand. Measure them running together rather than multiplying a single-stream estimate: the work may not scale evenly, and provider CPU scheduling or egress limits can become the bottleneck.

Plan bandwidth and monthly transfer as well as CPU and RAM
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends testing upload bitrate and gives recommended ingest bitrates by resolution, frame rate, and codec. The following are YouTube recommendations current on October 3, 2026—not VPS CPU requirements:

At a constant bitrate, one Mbps sustained for 30 days is about 324 GB of outbound data. So 10 Mbps is approximately 3.24 TB per 30 days, and 14 Mbps is approximately 4.54 TB. These are arithmetic estimates from bitrate and time, not YouTube-published transfer figures; actual usage can be higher because of protocol overhead and reconnects. Check whether your host counts outbound traffic, how much is included, and what it charges or does when you exceed the allowance.
YouTube transcodes the incoming stream for viewers. The VPS needs to produce and send your chosen input stream; it generally does not need to encode a separate copy for every viewer.

Test the actual stream before relying on it
- Use representative media and settings. Test the same file, resolution, frame rate, codec, audio, and FFmpeg command intended for the continuous stream. Include encoding or filters if the production setup uses them.
- Run a sustained trial. Watch CPU, memory, output bitrate, and whether the process maintains real-time output. Check for CPU throttling or provider limits as well as application-level load.
- Test the upload path. YouTube recommends running a speed test to check upload bitrate. Confirm the VPS can sustain the selected output and that the provider’s transfer policy suits a continuous stream.
- Test with realistic content. YouTube advises including audio and movement similar to the real stream. Monitor stream health and review any messages during the test.
- Allow headroom and plan recovery. Avoid treating a configuration that only just works in a short test as a reliable 24/7 setup. Use process supervision and automatic restart where appropriate, and verify recovery behavior rather than assuming a VPS or YouTube connection will never drop.
Use RTMPS and protect the stream key
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Its developer guidance requires a valid YouTube ingestion endpoint and port 443, with the documented SSL/TLS and hostname requirements. Configure the endpoint supplied for your stream rather than guessing one. Treat the stream key like a password: keep it out of public scripts, logs, repositories, and screenshots, and regenerate it if it is exposed.
Choose a self-managed VPS or managed cloud streaming
A VPS gives you control over the operating system and streaming process, but you are responsible for sizing, monitoring, restart behavior, and checking CPU and outbound-transfer terms. For prerecorded continuous video, YouTube’s verified-encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud-based 24/7 service; it also lists Upstream as a cloud studio for 24/7 live video. Confirm that a service supports your source material, output settings, scheduling, storage needs, region, price, and account requirements before choosing it.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a managed alternative to sizing and maintaining a VPS. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud. Nothing has to stay running at home, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Your upload streams as made, up to 4K at 60 fps, at one flat price per slot rather than a quality tier. The first day is free with no card required; it is one free day per account.

Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery, and support from the StreamNeo team. Plans vary by billing length; the same product is included on every plan. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Visit StreamNeo or start the free first day.
Troubleshoot common sizing and stream problems
- CPU stays high or output falls behind: Check whether the command is encoding, resizing, or applying filters rather than only transmitting a prepared file. Reduce unnecessary processing or benchmark a VPS with more sustained CPU capacity.
- RAM steadily rises: Check the encoder, containers, and other co-located services for growing buffers or leaks. Compare memory use over a longer run, not just at startup.
- The stream drops despite low CPU use: Check VPS network stability, upload bitrate, RTMPS endpoint and port configuration, stream health messages, and the provider’s outbound limits. Configure and test restart or reconnect handling.
- The stream works briefly but fails later: Review sustained CPU restrictions, transfer caps or overages, storage availability, and process supervision. A short successful test does not establish 24/7 reliability.
- Viewers report different playback quality: YouTube transcodes the incoming stream for viewers. Check the source stream’s health and settings before assuming that the VPS needs to send a separate stream for each viewer.
Keep copyright and channel eligibility in view
Having enough VPS resources does not grant permission to stream the media. Use video and audio you own or are licensed to use, and review YouTube’s live-streaming rules and channel eligibility. Continuous repetition of prerecorded material is a separate content and rights consideration from server sizing; technical stability does not guarantee that a stream or channel complies with platform policies.
