For a practical 720p30 starting point, use 6 Mbps video, 128 kbps stereo AAC, a two-second keyframe interval and RTMPS. That setting does not guarantee a small VPS can encode in real time: test sustained CPU, network and stream health before leaving it unattended.
Choose resolution and bitrate before configuring FFmpeg
YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate depends on both ingest resolution and frame rate. Its encoder-settings guidance says, “Recommended bitrate setting ranges are based on video ingestion codec, video ingestion resolution and frame rate.” The current recommendations below are for H.264 video; they are not universal values for every codec.
| Output resolution and frame rate | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 360p30 | 4 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 4 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a promise that a particular VPS can produce that output. A useful first test is 720p30 if the source supports it and the VPS sustains real-time encoding. YouTube also recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe frequency (do not exceed four seconds), and frame rates up to 60 fps. For stereo AAC audio, use 128 kbps as a practical setting. See YouTube’s encoder settings for its current guidance.
Use an FFmpeg command for a looping file
This example loops a local video indefinitely and sends it to YouTube using H.264 at 720p30’s recommended video bitrate. It assumes a 30 fps source or output; the 60-frame GOP therefore equals two seconds.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
-c:v libx264 -b:v 6000k -maxrate 6000k -bufsize 12000k -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "rtmps://<ingest-address>/<stream-key>"
- Replace
input.mp4with the actual source path. Check its video frame rate and whether it contains an audio stream before starting. - In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the ingest address and stream key into the output URL. Replace both placeholders; keep the key private.
- Run the command, then inspect the preview and stream health in Live Control Room before relying on it.
This is an illustrative command, not a universal tested configuration. FFmpeg’s -re paces file input in real time, which is useful when using a file as a live source. FFmpeg warns against applying a low read rate to a real live input because it can cause packet loss. Its bitrate options are expressed in bits per second. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for option details.
If the input has no audio, the example’s audio encoding cannot create a source stream by itself: map or generate audio as appropriate. If the file is already encoded in a compatible format, stream copy may save CPU, but check codec and container compatibility and verify output health before depending on it. There is no source-backed universal CPU benchmark for small VPS instances.

Understand the bitrate and rate-control options
-b:v 6000ksets the target video bitrate (6,000 kilobits per second, or 6 Mbps).-maxrate 6000kand-bufsize 12000kconfigure rate-control behavior. The buffer is not additional network capacity, and setting these values does not guarantee a perfectly flat instantaneous bitrate.-b:a 128ksets the audio bitrate to 128 kbps.-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP. At 30 fps, that is a two-second keyframe interval; change it if your actual output frame rate differs.
Use CBR guidance for a conventional YouTube live stream and validate the result in Live Control Room. If you change resolution or frame rate, recalculate the GOP length in frames to preserve the two-second interval, then select the bitrate for the new H.264 combination.
Check whether the VPS has enough outbound bandwidth
YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving about 20% headroom. Include audio and any simultaneous backup stream in the calculation. For the example’s 6 Mbps video plus 128 kbps audio, payload is about 6.13 Mbps before network overhead; allowing 20% headroom means planning for roughly 7.4 Mbps sustained outbound capacity. That arithmetic is not a provider guarantee. YouTube’s encoder settings and streaming tips explain the platform guidance.

- Measure the VPS’s actual route and sustained outbound performance rather than relying only on an advertised port speed.
- Check the provider’s traffic allowance and any port or usage limits.
- If using a backup stream, budget for primary and backup bitrate together.
Test the VPS instead of guessing at CPU and RAM
No universal vCPU or RAM minimum can responsibly predict whether a “small” VPS will encode reliably. The workload changes with resolution, frame rate, codec, x264 preset, source complexity, other processes and whether FFmpeg encodes video or only forwards a compatible pre-encoded stream.
- Test with representative motion and audio, not a static or unusually easy clip.
- Run long enough to expose CPU saturation, bandwidth instability and process problems. Watch FFmpeg’s reported processing speed; sustained speed below real time means it is falling behind.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room for preview, stream health and warnings. YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the real stream and checking health during the event.
- If encoding falls behind, reduce resolution or frame rate, select a faster x264 preset, or move to a VPS with more dedicated compute. Retest after each change.
For plan comparisons, examine sustained or dedicated CPU, outbound bandwidth, traffic caps, network quality and whether long-running processes are supported. No named VPS plan has been evaluated here, so a plan’s advertised size alone is not evidence that it will keep a particular encode real time.

Use RTMPS and verify the stream before leaving it unattended
RTMPS is the conventional choice for an H.264 stream unless a workflow calls for another ingest protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS as an encrypted extension of RTMP. HLS and DASH are segment-based protocols and generally have greater latency, although they support other codec and high-resolution use cases; see YouTube’s ingest protocol comparison.
A bitrate value and platform setting cannot guarantee uninterrupted service. Before unattended operation, confirm that video and audio appear in the Live Control Room preview, review ingest health warnings, and leave a test running long enough to reveal resource or network issues. A nonstop setup also needs process supervision and a way to notice failures. YouTube documents stream keys and live-stream resources in its Live Streaming API documentation.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg speed stays below real time | The VPS cannot encode the selected workload fast enough. | Reduce resolution or frame rate, use a faster x264 preset, or test on a VPS with more dedicated compute. Retest with representative content. |
| Live Control Room reports unstable bitrate or poor stream health | Insufficient or inconsistent outbound capacity, or incorrect rate-control configuration. | Measure sustained route capacity, include audio and any backup stream, leave roughly 20% headroom, and review the FFmpeg bitrate settings. |
| Video appears but there is no sound | The source may not contain an audio stream. | Inspect the input streams and map or generate an audio source rather than assuming -c:a has audio to encode. |
| Keyframe or codec warning | The output GOP interval or codec does not match the intended ingest configuration. | Confirm the output frame rate, set a two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds), and check the codec and stream-health warning. |
| The stream stops after running for a while | A process, provider, CPU or network interruption may have occurred. | Review FFmpeg logs, resource use and provider limits; set up process supervision and failure alerts, then repeat a sustained test. |
