B2 stores the media; it does not perform playlist playback or live encoding. Treat the design below as an implementation plan, not a verified end-to-end command: the exact playlist, authentication and recovery setup depends on your encoder and must be tested with your files.
How the B2-to-YouTube setup fits together
The system has three separate jobs: storage, playback and live delivery. Backblaze B2 stores the source objects. A retrieval method makes them available to the media pipeline, either by downloading them to a machine or fetching them as needed. An encoder or media pipeline sequences and repeats the files, then sends a continuous feed to YouTube Live.
- Retrieve: access B2 objects through its S3-compatible API, native API, or another configured integration.
- Rotate: have your selected media pipeline play the files in the intended order and repeat them, handling format differences and failed retrievals.
- Publish: configure the encoder with YouTube’s Live server URL and stream key, then monitor the encoder and YouTube stream health.
Backblaze documents the storage interfaces, and YouTube documents its encoder ingestion settings. Those interfaces do not establish that a particular encoder can authenticate to private B2 objects or that a specific playlist command will run indefinitely.
Choose how the encoder gets files from B2
Download and stage files locally
With local staging, download the objects to storage available to the encoder, then point the playlist or media pipeline at those files. This keeps playback from depending on a B2 request for every item once files are staged, but requires enough local storage and a process to keep the staged set current. Plan how new, removed or replaced objects will enter the playlist.

Retrieve objects as needed
Backblaze’s S3-compatible API supports object retrieval over regional HTTPS endpoints and Signature Version 4. Its integration guide recommends this API for most new integrations that want existing S3 tooling. The endpoint form is https://s3.<region>.backblazeb2.com; use the endpoint and region appropriate to your B2 bucket. See Backblaze B2 S3-compatible API and the B2 integration guide.
A private bucket needs a configured authentication or access path. Depending on the encoder, that may mean a retrieval adapter, a compatible S3 integration, or a presigned download URL. Backblaze documents presigned downloads, but whether your chosen encoder can use them directly is vendor-specific. Do not paste long-lived credentials into a public playlist, page or log.
Native API downloads are another retrieval option; consult Backblaze’s download API documentation for its documented approach. Whichever method you choose, test what happens when a request expires, fails or is interrupted.

Compare the retrieval approaches

There are no established latency, throughput or cost figures for this particular setup. Measure the B2 region, network route, source media and encoder configuration you intend to use.
Build and test the rotating playlist
Choose software running on an existing computer or dedicated encoder hardware according to supported inputs and codecs, unattended operation, and recovery behavior. Dedicated hardware is optional; neither the documented YouTube setup nor B2’s storage interface establishes that a specific product can fetch private B2 files by itself.
Configure the selected media pipeline to read the chosen items in order and repeat the sequence. Before running unattended, decide and test:

- How playlist order is defined, and whether rotation means repeating the full list or another sequence.
- How files are added, removed or replaced while the stream is running.
- How the pipeline handles files with incompatible containers, codecs, frame rates or audio properties.
- Whether it buffers or downloads the next item before the current one ends, and what happens if retrieval fails.
- How it behaves at file boundaries, including whether gaps, black frames or silence occur.
- How the process restarts after an encoder failure and resumes the intended playlist position.
The official documentation cited here does not establish a validated FFmpeg command for indefinitely rotating private B2 files, credential refresh, playlist updates or reconnect behavior. Do not treat a generic command as production-ready without checking it against the exact encoder version, source formats and authentication method you deploy.
Configure YouTube Live ingestion
- Create or select the YouTube Live setup: YouTube’s API distinguishes the incoming
liveStreamfrom the viewer-facingliveBroadcast; a broadcast binds to a stream. The LiveStreams resource describes ingestion settings and stream status, while Broadcasts and Streams documents the API relationship and reuse patterns. - Copy the ingestion details into your encoder: enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key. YouTube’s setup instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” Follow the current steps in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Keep the key private: configure it in the encoder’s protected settings, not in a public playlist, webpage or shared configuration. Anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Use a secure ingestion option where supported: YouTube documents RTMPS for secure RTMP ingestion and specifies port 443 in its RTMPS guide. Match the URL and protocol shown for your YouTube stream in the encoder.
- Check status before relying on the stream: inspect encoder logs and YouTube’s stream health/status information during a representative test playlist.
YouTube’s documented stream/broadcast distinction also matters operationally: decide whether your workflow reuses a stream configuration or creates separate scheduled broadcasts. The API documents both resources; choose the arrangement that fits how you schedule and manage viewer-facing events.
Test failures and long-running behavior
Run the full playlist for a representative period before depending on it. Include a B2 retrieval interruption, an encoder restart and a playlist change in testing if those events are possible in your deployment. Record where the pipeline stores logs and how an operator can restart it without exposing credentials.

Only stream media you have the rights and permissions to use. A file being stored in your B2 account does not establish that you may broadcast it. Review YouTube’s current rules for copyright and reused content before putting a recurring playlist on a public channel; repeated playback does not make unlicensed material permissible.
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after they end. Check the current YouTube encoder guidance before relying on archive behavior, since platform policies can change.
