To automate the workflow, schedule the event in YouTube Studio, configure OBS to start streaming when it launches, and configure the host to launch OBS after boot. There is one important qualification: YouTube’s standard scheduled-stream instructions tell you to check the preview and click Go live. Encoder-controlled Auto-start is a separate stream setting, so test whether it removes that manual step for your exact setup before relying on unattended broadcasting.
What has to happen after a reboot
Think of the setup as two linked configurations: YouTube must have a scheduled event ready to receive the feed, and the server must launch an encoder that sends the feed. Scheduling creates the event; it does not launch OBS or restart it when the host boots. OBS documents a --startstreaming launch parameter, while systemd can enable a service to start at boot. Those are separate building blocks, not a universal, tested OBS service configuration.
There is also a YouTube-side decision. YouTube’s encoder workflow describes waiting for the preview in Live Control Room and clicking Go live. Its settings documentation separately offers Auto-start & auto-stop, which can allow starting and stopping from the encoder when enabled. Do not assume a scheduled event will go public without the manual action: validate the specific event, key, encoder and Auto-start behavior using a private or unlisted test.
Schedule the YouTube event and prepare its stream settings
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live → Manage, then schedule a stream. Set the title, privacy, date and time, and other event details. Scheduling can create an upcoming page and let viewers opt in to notifications.
- Open the scheduled event in Live Control Room and note the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password. YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address.” If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- Enter the URL and key in OBS’s stream settings. Use YouTube’s RTMPS URL if the encoder supports it; RTMPS is YouTube’s encrypted RTMP option. Check YouTube’s RTMPS setup and compatibility guidance if the encoder cannot connect.
- Review the event’s stream settings, including Auto-start & auto-stop. If you want the encoder to trigger the event without clicking Go live, enable the relevant option and confirm it with a test. YouTube’s documented scheduled encoder workflow still describes a preview followed by a manual Go live click, so the setting should not be treated as proof that every scheduled configuration will start unattended.
Keep the key out of source-controlled scripts, screenshots, public service logs and shared shell history. YouTube’s live stream settings guide covers stream keys and Auto-start/Auto-stop; its encoder workflow covers scheduling, connecting and going live.

Configure the encoder and host to start after boot
OBS: start streaming when OBS launches
OBS documents --startstreaming as a launch parameter that starts streaming when OBS opens. Add it to the command or shortcut that launches OBS. The exact command depends on the operating system and OBS installation; do not copy a command path from another host without checking it. On Windows, OBS notes that automated or scheduled launch may also require the correct working directory. See the OBS launch-parameters reference.
This parameter addresses the encoder action, not boot startup by itself. You still need a host mechanism to launch OBS after reboot. Also verify that OBS has access to the intended scene, media, audio devices, GPU and user session at that time. A desktop-oriented OBS setup may depend on a logged-in graphical session or capture devices that are unavailable on a headless server.

Linux: enable a systemd service at boot
On a Linux host managed by systemd, configure an appropriate service to launch the encoder, then enable that unit so it is arranged to start at boot. The systemctl manual distinguishes enabling a unit from starting it immediately: enabling sets up boot activation; it does not mean the service is running now. A restart policy such as Restart=always addresses process exits, not boot activation, and systemd documents exceptions such as an intentional stop by the service manager.
The systemctl manual and systemd.service manual explain those lifecycle controls. They do not establish a complete OBS unit file for every server. The service command, user, session, graphics/audio inputs, network readiness and encoder configuration must match the actual host. Confirm that the service can access the needed files and devices after reboot, and review its logs without exposing the stream key.

Choose the ingest protocol deliberately
Use RTMPS when the encoder supports YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint; YouTube describes it as the encrypted RTMP option. RTMP may be necessary for encoder compatibility, but it does not provide the same transport encryption. For protocol setup or connection failures, use YouTube’s RTMPS help page. For resolution, codec, frame rate and matching bitrate recommendations, consult YouTube’s encoder settings table rather than relying on one bitrate for every output combination.
Test the entire unattended workflow before using it publicly
- Create a private or unlisted test event and configure its stream key, URL and Auto-start choice.
- Confirm the encoder can connect and that Live Control Room receives a healthy preview. Check the intended scene or media, video and audio, and the scheduled event’s privacy.
- Reboot the actual server. Confirm the host mechanism launched the encoder and that the encoder began sending the correct feed. For systemd, verify the unit’s enabled state and inspect its status and logs; for OBS, confirm it opened with the expected scene and stream settings.
- Observe the YouTube event. Determine whether the configured Auto-start behavior actually removes the manual Go live action in this workflow. If it does not, plan for an operator to approve the preview and start the event rather than promising fully unattended publication.
- Test recovery from the failures that matter for your installation: a temporary network interruption, an encoder process exit, and a reboot. Confirm what restarts automatically and what requires a person to act.
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder in advance, previewing the feed and monitoring stream quality. Its live-streaming tips recommend configuring encoders at least two hours before the event and starting them at least 15 minutes before it; these are operational recommendations, not guarantees of reliability. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.

Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The YouTube event is scheduled, but nothing streams after reboot. | Scheduling created the event but did not launch the encoder, or the host service/automation is not enabled. | Check boot startup separately from OBS’s --startstreaming parameter. Confirm the host actually launches OBS or the configured encoder after reboot. |
| The encoder sends a preview, but the event does not become live. | The scheduled encoder workflow may still require a manual Go live action, or Auto-start is not enabled or does not apply as expected. | Check the event’s Auto-start setting and test the exact workflow privately. Do not infer public go-live behavior from a successful preview. |
| OBS launches but does not stream. | The launch parameter may be missing or malformed, settings may not be available to the launched user, or OBS may not have the required session or sources. | Verify the launch arguments, OBS profile and scene, user context, media paths, devices and logs. Test after a real reboot, not only by opening OBS manually. |
| The systemd service starts but exits or cannot access sources. | The service may run as a different user, start before required resources are available, or lack access to the graphical session, devices or files. | Inspect unit status and logs, confirm user and permissions, and account for network readiness and the host’s session and device dependencies. A restart policy cannot supply missing inputs. |
| YouTube reports an ingest or key problem. | The URL, key or protocol may not match the event, or the key may have been reset or exposed. | Recheck the scheduled event’s URL and key, update the encoder after any reset, and try RTMPS if supported. Keep credentials out of logs and shared history. |
| The stream connects but the output is unstable or wrong. | The configured output may not match YouTube’s recommended settings, or the intended scene/media/audio is unavailable after reboot. | Compare resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate with YouTube’s encoder settings recommendations; inspect the preview and monitor stream health. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded videos, rather than a server running a live camera or interactive OBS scene, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running, so nothing has to stay on at home. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. StreamNeo also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the Monthly option is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos; it is not a camera encoder or a replacement for testing YouTube’s scheduled-event controls.
