To reduce the cost of a nonstop YouTube playlist stream, first make sure you are pricing the right job: a server that encodes and sends one feed to YouTube is not the same as a service that also packages and delivers video to viewers. For a single feed, right-size the encoder, avoid unnecessary transcoding, and estimate the cost of the actual always-on configuration in its intended region. YouTube creates viewer renditions itself, so you usually do not need to build them on your server.

Identify what the cloud server is doing

A cloud bill depends on the architecture, not simply on the fact that a stream runs 24/7. If a VM plays a playlist, encodes one output, and sends it to YouTube, its main job is continuous encoding and ingest. A larger streaming stack may also package the video and distribute it directly to viewers. Those are different workloads and their prices are not interchangeable.

  • Single-feed encoder: the server sends one live feed to YouTube. YouTube handles viewer-facing transcoding.
  • Packaging and viewer delivery: a service may encode, package, and deliver video to viewers. Its compute and network costs cover more than sending one feed to YouTube.

Before comparing estimates, write down what each one includes: compute, storage, network transfer, packaging, and viewer delivery. The AWS example discussed below includes encoding, packaging, and distribution, so it is not a monthly price for a VM sending a playlist to YouTube.

Set an output quality the playlist needs

Choose resolution and frame rate for the material and audience rather than automatically selecting the highest available settings. YouTube publishes bitrate ranges by resolution and frame rate; use its current guidance for the output you select, then test the stream and monitor its health. A lower, appropriate output bitrate can reduce the capacity your encoder and network path need, while unnecessarily high settings can add cost without improving the viewing experience.

  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, supports up to 60 fps, lists CBR as the bitrate mode, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Check the current recommendations and supported settings at YouTube’s live encoder settings, since platform guidance can change.

Avoid encoding work YouTube already does

YouTube automatically transcodes an incoming live stream into output formats for viewers. Unless your workflow has a specific requirement for another operation, do not spend compute generating multiple viewer renditions before sending the feed to YouTube. A simpler encoder configuration can avoid redundant work while leaving YouTube to produce its viewer formats.

Use the correct ingest protocol and verify the stream

YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live content. Confirm that the encoder uses the correct protocol, endpoint, stream path, and port 443; a configuration mismatch can prevent ingest even when the server is running. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide describes the required connection details. HLS ingestion is a different workflow with playlist and segment requirements, and the guide notes that it usually has higher latency than RTMP- and WebRTC-based ingestion; use it only if your encoder or workflow calls for it. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide.

Before relying on a lower-cost configuration, test representative audio and motion and review YouTube’s stream health indicators. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing and monitoring rather than assuming a configuration is stable because it starts successfully.

Build an estimate for the real always-on setup

There is no single defensible monthly figure without a provider, region, instance or encoder type, output bitrate, and billing terms. Price the configuration you will actually run and include only components it uses. Use this checklist when requesting or calculating an estimate:

  • Compute or VM charges for continuous operation in the chosen region.
  • Storage for playlist files, if they are kept in the cloud.
  • Network transfer, with the stream bitrate and continuous schedule specified; verify how the provider bills the relevant traffic and destination.
  • Monitoring, restart tooling, or managed encoding and packaging components, if used.
  • Whether the estimate includes only one feed to YouTube or also packaging and viewer delivery.

Do not treat network charges as a universal flat rate: confirm the provider’s applicable terms for the selected region and traffic path. The reader discussion about using Google Cloud for a 24/7 OBS stream dates to 2020 and does not establish a current price or general network-billing rule.

Compare like with like

AWS publishes an example of approximately $69.74 for a one-hour event serving approximately 1,000 viewers at SD-540p. In that example, about $2.50 is for live encoding and packaging, and $67.24 is for 791 GB of distribution in US East (N. Virginia). The example’s year is not stated on the retrieved page, and AWS says estimates depend on solution revision and region; check current pricing before using it. Most importantly, this is a viewer-distribution workload using AWS’s live streaming solution, not a monthly estimate for one playlist feed sent to YouTube. See the AWS Live Streaming on AWS solution.

When weighing a self-operated VM against a managed playlist service, compare workflow support, price, reliability terms, and operational responsibility. Verify that a provider supports nonstop prerecorded playlists to YouTube; do not infer support or uptime terms from a generic cloud-streaming product description.
