YouTube explicitly documents HEVC (H.265) ingest over HLS, so HLS is the clearest documented route when you need to send an existing H.265 video from a remote server. It requires muxed M2TS with AAC audio and usually has more latency than RTMP. YouTube’s documentation conflicts on HEVC over RTMP/RTMPS; verify the protocol shown for your stream in Live Control Room before relying on that route.

Choose HLS or RTMPS before configuring the server

YouTube’s live encoder settings page lists H.265 among accepted codecs and recommends it for HDR over RTMP(S). However, Google’s protocol comparison page, last updated 2026-06-01 UTC, lists H.264 for RTMP and RTMPS and HEVC for HLS. The documents do not resolve this discrepancy. For a documented HEVC workflow, choose HLS; if you need RTMPS, confirm that the current ingest configuration and your encoder both support HEVC before the event.

Consideration HLS RTMPS
HEVC documentation YouTube’s HLS guide explicitly accepts HEVC. The encoder settings page lists HEVC, while the protocol comparison page lists H.264 only. Verify current compatibility.
Latency Segment-based ingest usually has higher latency than RTMP or WebRTC. YouTube describes RTMPS as suitable for ordinary content, including low-latency use.
Media and transport Muxed M2TS with HEVC video and AAC audio; upload playlists and segments over HTTPS. RTMP carried over TLS to the correct ingest address and application path, using port 443 and SNI.
HDR Supported with HEVC and specified 10-bit color metadata. YouTube’s HDR guidance describes H.265 over RTMP(S), subject to the documentation conflict above.
Best fit Use when you prioritize an explicitly documented HEVC path or HDR/high-resolution delivery over lowest latency. Consider when latency matters, but verify HEVC compatibility in the current stream configuration.

Inspect the H.265 source before sending it

Check the file or live source before choosing passthrough, remuxing, or transcoding. Confirm its video codec and profile, pixel format, frame rate, keyframe interval/GOP, audio codec, and container. A video stream may already be HEVC while its audio or container still fails YouTube’s HLS requirements. The requirements below come from YouTube’s documentation; they do not certify any particular file or FFmpeg command.

  • For HLS, the output must be muxed M2TS with HEVC video and AAC audio.
  • The GOP must be closed, and frame rate must not exceed 60 fps.
  • The HLS guide supports one audio track.
  • If the source does not meet these requirements, remux or transcode the necessary parts rather than assuming video passthrough alone is sufficient.

Configure the server for YouTube HLS ingest

  1. Get the HLS ingest address. Obtain it through the YouTube Live API or creator interface. The creator-interface route is described as beta and may change, so follow the current instructions in your account.
  2. Prepare compliant media. Produce muxed M2TS containing HEVC video and AAC audio, with a closed GOP and no more than 60 fps.
  3. Create HLS media playlists and segments. Send media playlists, not master playlists, along with their segments. YouTube specifies segment durations of one to four seconds.
  4. Upload over HTTPS. HLS ingest sends playlists and segments using HTTP PUT or POST. Follow the endpoint’s current requirements rather than substituting a generic streaming URL.
  5. Keep the server’s outbound connection stable. Allow bandwidth headroom above your selected video bitrate for audio, protocol overhead, and network variation. That headroom is practical guidance, not a YouTube-published fixed multiplier.

Because HLS is segment-based, YouTube says it usually has higher latency than RTMP or WebRTC. The cited guidance does not provide a measured end-to-end delay for this particular server workflow.

Set bitrate, frame rate, and keyframes

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. Its current live encoder settings page recommends up to 60 fps. The HEVC bitrate targets below are YouTube recommendations, not independent performance benchmarks; they are not H.264 targets.

  • Do not guess or reuse an endpoint’s application path; use the current address associated with the stream.
  • Keep the stream key private. Regenerate it in YouTube if it is exposed.
  • An SSL error can indicate a wrong endpoint or port. A timeout can indicate that plain RTMP was used instead of RTMPS.

Do not assume that a generic RTMPS encoder preset proves YouTube will accept HEVC. Resolve the codec/protocol mismatch in your current Live Control Room setup before scheduling an event that depends on it.

Configure HDR color correctly, if applicable

For HLS HDR, YouTube documents HEVC with 10-bit YUV 4:2:0, PQ or HLG transfer, and Rec. 2020 primaries and matrix. The source’s color metadata must match the configured output; changing labels without matching the actual source can produce incorrect color. YouTube’s HLS help also describes TS segments, a rolling playlist, no byte range, and HTTPS upload. Check the current HLS and HDR guidance for the precise implementation details.

For RTMP(S) HDR, YouTube’s HDR help describes H.265 support, but the separate protocol comparison’s H.264-only RTMP(S) listing remains a reason to verify the current ingest configuration rather than treating compatibility as settled.

Troubleshoot common H.265 ingest problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube does not accept HEVC over RTMP(S) The protocol documentation conflicts, or the configured endpoint/encoder does not support HEVC. Check the current protocol and codec in Live Control Room. Use HLS if you need the explicitly documented HEVC path.
HLS connection starts but media is rejected Container, audio, GOP, frame rate, playlist type, or upload method does not meet HLS requirements. Verify muxed M2TS, AAC, closed GOP, at most 60 fps, media playlists, one-to-four-second segments, and HTTPS PUT or POST.
RTMPS reports an SSL error Incorrect endpoint, port, TLS setup, or server hostname/SNI. Use the exact current RTMPS address and application path, port 443, and correct SNI hostname.
RTMPS times out Plain RTMP may have been attempted, or the server cannot reach the secure endpoint. Confirm the URL uses RTMPS and that outbound connectivity to the configured endpoint works.
Video arrives but audio does not Audio is absent or is not AAC in the HLS output. Inspect the source and muxed output’s audio codec and track selection.
HDR looks washed out or incorrectly tinted Output color metadata does not match the source or required HDR format. Check 10-bit YUV 4:2:0, PQ or HLG, and Rec. 2020 primaries and matrix against the actual source.
Health warnings or interruptions occur Bitrate exceeds stable server uplink capacity, or the connection/source is unstable. Check stream health and warnings, verify stable outbound headroom, and test with representative movement and audio.

Copyright and YouTube live rules still apply

Using a remote server or H.265 encoding does not change YouTube’s content rules. Before streaming, make sure you have the necessary rights for the video, music, and other material, and review YouTube’s current live-stream policies and copyright guidance. Codec compatibility is not permission to broadcast copyrighted material.
