You can run a prerecorded playlist as a YouTube Live broadcast from a Google Compute Engine (GCE) Linux virtual machine by connecting an encoder on the VM to YouTube’s ingestion server. YouTube Live Control Room manages the broadcast, the VM runs the encoder and reads media you are authorized to stream, and RTMPS carries the encoded video to YouTube. The key limitation: the official setup guidance cited here does not establish a specific FFmpeg playlist-loop command, so do not rely on an unverified command or assume a YouTube playlist page is a direct media input.

What you need before starting

  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. The channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days. YouTube lists an encoder as one way to stream. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • A Linux GCE VM with access to the media files and an encoder that can continuously read them and send a stream to YouTube.
  • The stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key as a credential: do not commit it to public source control or show it in screenshots. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  • Enough VM capacity and outbound network bandwidth for the chosen video resolution, frame rate and encoding method.

1. Create the YouTube encoder stream

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule an encoder stream, then note its stream URL and stream key.
  2. Keep the key private and provide it only to the encoder configuration that needs it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s stream settings.
  3. Before making the broadcast public, send an output signal from the encoder and check the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that both video and audio are correct. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

2. Provision a Linux VM on Google Compute Engine

  1. Enable Compute Engine for your Google Cloud project, then create a VM from a Linux public image using Google’s VM creation instructions.
  2. Choose the machine size after deciding your target resolution, frame rate and encoder. Software encoding can require substantially more CPU than simply relaying already-encoded media; test the actual workload rather than choosing a VM based only on its ability to start.
  3. Put the authorized media somewhere the VM can read reliably, such as its disk or an appropriately mounted storage location. Check that the playlist’s paths and permissions will still work after a reboot.
  4. Do not open inbound firewall ports merely to send the stream to YouTube. The encoder sends its output over the network to YouTube; add inbound access only if a separate administration or monitoring need requires it. See Google’s firewall documentation.

GCE supports Linux startup scripts supplied through instance metadata. They run as root when the VM boots and run only when network access is available. They can help automate repeatable setup, but protect any secrets in the script and make the setup safe to run again. See Google’s Linux startup-script documentation.

3. Configure the encoder and playlist

The encoder needs to read media you are authorized to use, produce a continuous output, and send it to YouTube’s ingestion URL using the stream key. A playlist page on YouTube is not automatically a media file that an encoder can ingest. Choose an encoder and verify its current primary documentation for supported file formats, playlist ordering, repeat or loop behavior, audio continuity, restart behavior and how it accepts the YouTube destination and key.

No specific FFmpeg playlist command is established here. Do not paste an unverified loop command into a VM and assume it will keep a broadcast running: playlist syntax and looping behavior depend on the selected input and encoder setup. Validate the playlist with a short private or unlisted test before relying on it for a long broadcast.

4. Set stream quality and test it

YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Select a resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate that both the VM and its network can sustain. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate and resolution table for the exact supported codecs and recommended bitrate ranges rather than treating a fixed bitrate as suitable for every stream.

  • Leave upload capacity above the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% headroom in its streaming tips.
  • Test using conditions close to the intended broadcast, including the chosen resolution and frame rate.
  • Check Live Control Room’s incoming preview and stream health, and verify that the audio is present and stays in sync.
  • Monitor the VM’s CPU, network and encoder process during the test. If encoding cannot keep up, reduce the workload or select a VM with appropriate capacity.

5. Keep the broadcast running and recover from problems

Use boot automation or a process supervisor so a reboot does not leave the encoder stopped. Configure the process to restart safely, and confirm that the media path, key and network access are available when it starts. The correct supervisor and restart policy depend on your chosen encoder; verify those settings in that software’s documentation.

For routine checks, confirm that the incoming preview appears, the right video and audio are playing, the encoder process is alive, outbound networking works, and the media location remains readable. YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours; do not assume a continuous broadcast longer than 12 hours will be saved as one complete archive. Plan how you will preserve or divide longer programming. YouTube’s encoder instructions.

Common failures and fixes

  • No preview in Live Control Room: confirm the encoder is running, the stream URL and key are correct, and the VM has outbound network access. Recheck the stream’s status in YouTube Studio.
  • Video appears but audio does not: inspect the source files and encoder’s audio configuration, then test a representative playlist item before restarting the broadcast.
  • Playback stops at the end of a file: verify the selected encoder’s documented playlist and repeat behavior. Do not assume that a playlist automatically loops.
  • The VM reboots but the stream stays down: check the startup script or supervisor logs and confirm the media is mounted and network access is available before the encoder starts.
  • Stream health is poor or output stalls: compare the configured output with YouTube’s current bitrate guidance, confirm the VM has capacity, and preserve the recommended upload headroom.
  • Livestream setup is unavailable: check channel verification and any live-streaming restrictions before troubleshooting the VM.

6. Estimate the ongoing Google Cloud cost

A 24/7 broadcast consumes VM compute and outbound networking continuously. The total also depends on region, VM family and size, disk, IP choices and outbound data, so there is no reliable single monthly figure without those inputs. Check Google’s current Compute Engine pricing and network pricing for your planned configuration.

Google says Spot VMs can be discounted by up to 91% off the on-demand price of standard VMs, but they can be reclaimed at any time and are recommended only for fault-tolerant workloads. That interruption risk makes a Spot VM a poor default when continuity for viewers matters. See Google’s Spot VM guidance.
