To capture lazy-loaded images with Puppeteer, set the viewport before navigation, scroll the relevant content into view to trigger loading, wait until the required images have loaded successfully, then take the screenshot. fullPage: true expands the captured area; it does not, by itself, guarantee that off-screen images will load.
Why Puppeteer screenshots miss lazy-loaded images
A screenshot records the page as it is rendered at capture time. Many pages defer loading images until they approach the viewport, so an image far below the fold may not have been requested when Puppeteer takes a screenshot. Waiting for navigation or network activity to settle is not proof that every off-screen image has loaded.
Puppeteer’s screenshot guide shows navigation followed by screenshot capture and notes that an element screenshot scrolls the element into view when it is hidden. The screenshot options define fullPage as a capture-extent option, not a lazy-loading trigger.
Use this sequence to load images before capture
- Choose the screenshot viewport. Set its width and height before navigating so the page renders at the dimensions you intend to capture.
- Navigate to the page. A navigation wait condition such as
networkidle2can help identify a broad navigation state, but it does not establish that lazy images throughout the page have loaded. - Trigger lazy loading. Scroll through the relevant page area, or scroll the specific container or image into view.
- Wait for the images you need. Check actual image readiness instead of relying only on a selector appearing or a delay expiring.
- Restore the desired scroll position and capture. Use
fullPage: trueif the output should include content beyond the viewport.
Here is a starting pattern for ordinary document-flow pages with images represented by <img> elements. It scrolls down the page, returns to the top, waits for in-DOM images to either load successfully or finish unsuccessfully, and captures the full page. Set a finite timeout so a failed image cannot leave the run waiting indefinitely.

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1280, height: 900 });
await page.goto('https://example.com', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle2',
timeout: 30000,
});
// Trigger viewport-based loading across a normal scrolling document.
await page.evaluate(async () => {
const step = Math.max(1, window.innerHeight);
const pageHeight = document.documentElement.scrollHeight;
for (let y = 0; y < pageHeight; y += step) {
window.scrollTo(0, y);
await new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, 100));
}
window.scrollTo(0, 0);
});
// Wait for each current <img> to finish; failed images do not hang the check.
await page.waitForFunction(
() => [...document.images].every(img => img.complete),
{ timeout: 15000 },
);
// Require successful dimensions for the images that must appear.
const failedImages = await page.evaluate(() =>
[...document.images]
.filter(img => !img.naturalWidth || !img.naturalHeight)
.map(img => img.currentSrc || img.src)
);
if (failedImages.length) {
throw new Error(`Images failed to load: ${failedImages.join(', ')}`);
}
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Replace the example URL with the page you own or are authorized to capture. This is a general implementation pattern, not a guarantee for every site. The scroll interval, readiness test, and target images may need adjustment for the page’s actual behavior.
Choose a loading trigger that matches the page
Ordinary page scrolling
For a page that loads images as the main document scrolls, scroll in increments through the content before capture. A fixed short pause can give viewport observers time to react, but it is only a trigger aid—not evidence that an image loaded. The readiness check should determine when the required assets are ready.
A particular image or element
If only certain content matters, locate the relevant element and bring it into view before checking its image. Puppeteer’s interaction guide describes viewport checks and scrolling interactions. A screenshot of a hidden element also scrolls it into view, according to the screenshot guide, but explicitly triggering and verifying loading before the final capture makes the sequence easier to control.

Nested scrollers and virtualized lists
Scrolling the window will not necessarily move a carousel, feed, modal, or other nested scroll container. Scroll the container that actually owns the content. Virtualized lists may remove off-screen items from the DOM, so a single full-page traversal cannot capture items that the application has not rendered; use the application’s own pagination or scrolling behavior and capture the required states.
CSS backgrounds and other image mechanisms
document.images covers DOM image elements, not every visual asset. A page may use CSS background-image, a canvas, an iframe, or JavaScript-managed placeholders. In those cases, inspect the relevant element and application state, then define a readiness condition for that mechanism. Do not treat an all-img check as proof that every visual image on the page is ready.
Viewport screenshot or full-page screenshot?
| Capture goal | What to do | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Current viewport | Scroll the target content into view, verify the needed images, and capture the intended viewport. | Images outside the viewport may not be included or loaded. |
| Full page | Trigger lazy loading across the relevant content, verify image readiness, then capture with fullPage: true. |
The option expands capture extent; it does not force every site’s lazy-loading code to run. |
The Puppeteer screenshot options document fullPage as false by default. Loading behavior and capture extent are separate concerns.

Make the readiness check fit the page
page.waitForFunction waits until a function evaluated in the page context returns a truthy value. For ordinary <img> elements, img.complete indicates loading has finished, while img.naturalWidth > 0 is a practical check that an image decoded with usable dimensions.
Decide what should happen when an image fails. The example waits until all current image elements have finished, then reports unsuccessful images. If a page intentionally contains broken or optional images, check only the required images—for example, by selecting them with a page-specific CSS selector—and define whether missing images should fail the capture or be accepted.

Troubleshoot missing images in order
- The expected element is absent: Confirm the content was inserted into the DOM. Check whether the page uses pagination, a virtualized list, an iframe, a canvas, or a CSS background instead of an ordinary image element.
- The image exists but is still a placeholder: Trigger the page’s actual lazy-load mechanism by scrolling the main document or the correct nested container. Inspect page-specific lazy-image attributes and application loading indicators.
- The image request failed: Check failed network requests and the image’s selected source. A responsive
srcsetcan choose different resources at different viewport sizes, so verify using the viewport used for the capture. - The wait times out: Do not remove the timeout and wait indefinitely. Identify which image or readiness condition is stuck; exclude optional images or adapt the predicate to the page’s loading model.
- The capture is full-page but images remain absent: Trigger loading before taking the screenshot. Increasing capture extent with
fullPage: truealone is not a substitute. - A banner or overlay blocks the page: Check consent overlays, authentication requirements, or other page-specific gates. These can prevent the content from loading or make the captured result differ from the intended page.
Performance and reliability considerations
Scrolling every page region and waiting for each required image adds work, so target only the content the screenshot needs when full coverage is unnecessary. A page-wide image predicate is simple, but it can be inappropriate when unrelated images are optional or continually inserted. A selector-specific condition is more precise when the target page’s DOM is known.
Keep navigation and readiness timeouts finite, and treat a failed image as a visible failure or an explicit exception—not as a successful screenshot. The exact scroll container, selector, and completion condition depend on the target page; there is no universal strategy that can be promised without its URL and DOM.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Puppeteer’s `fullPage: true` load lazy images?
No. It expands the screenshot’s capture area; trigger lazy loading and check image readiness separately.
Is `networkidle2` enough to know every lazy image loaded?
No. It is a broad navigation signal, not proof that off-screen images were requested or loaded.
