Shuffling determines the order; looping repeats it. The videos must have compatible streams for reliable concatenation, and your computer and network must remain available for the stream to continue.
What you need before you start
- A computer with FFmpeg installed and a stable internet connection with enough upload bandwidth for your chosen output.
- A folder of video files you have the right to stream. Keep the files available locally for the full broadcast.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, plus its current ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room.
FFmpeg’s online documentation describes the current development version, so options and behavior can vary with older installed releases. Check the documentation for your version and test the playlist locally before relying on it for a long-running broadcast.
Prepare compatible video files
Check the streams, not just the filenames
The FFmpeg concat demuxer treats a list of files as one virtual input. FFmpeg’s documentation says: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” In practice, check that the files have matching stream layouts and compatible codec and timing properties. Files that merely share a format or extension may still differ in ways that cause errors or glitches at transitions.
If your clips are incompatible, normalize or re-encode them to consistent video and audio properties before concatenating. The -c copy approach avoids re-encoding, but it cannot make mismatched streams compatible. Re-encoding requires additional processing and can change quality; choose settings appropriate to your source and target output.

Keep the library accessible
Use paths that remain valid for the entire stream. An external SSD can provide optional storage for a larger local video library, but no particular capacity or model is required by FFmpeg. Avoid renaming or moving files after creating the playlist.
Create a randomized concat playlist
First make a fresh random ordering of the files you intend to play. Then write that order into a text file in FFmpeg concat-script format. The exact command for randomizing filenames depends on your operating system and shell; quoting and escaping also differ, especially for filenames containing apostrophes, spaces, or newlines. Use a shell-specific shuffle utility or a small script that safely enumerates and quotes paths rather than assuming one command works everywhere.

A concat script has a file entry for each video, in the order you want FFmpeg to play it. For example, the following illustrates the structure only; replace the example paths with correctly escaped paths for your host environment:
file '/videos/clip-one.mp4'
file '/videos/clip-two.mp4'
file '/videos/clip-three.mp4'
Save it as a plain text file, such as playlist.txt. Consult the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation for the script syntax and directives. Do not treat the sample as a cross-platform escaping recipe.

Loop the shuffled list and send it to YouTube
Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to read the script, apply input looping as supported by your installed release, and configure the output for YouTube Live. FFmpeg options apply to the next input or output, so option placement matters: put input options before the input they affect, and output options before the destination. The official documentation covers the concat demuxer and input options, but does not publish one universal end-to-end command for shuffling, looping forever, and streaming to YouTube. Confirm the loop option and its placement for your FFmpeg version, then test with a short session before leaving it unattended.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Copy the current server/ingest URL and the stream key for the intended broadcast. YouTube supports reusable custom stream keys; keep the key private as you would a password. See YouTube’s stream key guidance.
- Choose an encrypted ingest endpoint where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted variant of the RTMP workflow. Use the exact URL shown for your setup rather than constructing one yourself. Encoder setup guidance is at YouTube’s live encoder settings.
- Configure the FFmpeg output. Set the video and audio codecs, bitrate, frame rate, resolution, keyframe interval, and output destination to match YouTube’s current guidance and the stream key. Do not paste the key into a public script, screenshot, or shared log.
- Start FFmpeg and verify the broadcast. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed, audio and video are present, and transitions work. Watch the live preview through at least one playlist repeat before treating the setup as ready for continuous operation.
Choose encoder settings for the actual output
YouTube’s live encoder table varies recommended bitrate by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use the row for your chosen output rather than treating any single bitrate as universal. As examples from YouTube’s H.264 guidance accessed in 2026, the recommendation is 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 8 Mbps for 720p30. Check the current table before going live because platform recommendations can change.

YouTube’s guidance states: “Keyframe frequency: Recommended 2 seconds Do not exceed 4 seconds”. Set the keyframe interval accordingly, using the encoder settings for your actual frame rate and codec. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio; confirm current compatibility and settings on its encoder page. YouTube transcodes live streams for different viewer formats.
Your upload connection must sustain the configured output. If it cannot, lower the output resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and select the matching recommendation in YouTube’s table. A high source-file resolution does not by itself guarantee a stable live output.

Decide whether to copy streams or re-encode
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
Stream copy (-c copy) |
All listed files already have compatible streams and the output is suitable for YouTube. | Avoids transcoding, but does not repair incompatible codecs, stream layouts, or time bases. |
| Re-encode or normalize first | Files differ and need consistent stream properties before concat playback. | Requires an additional conversion step and processing; choose settings intentionally to manage quality and file size. |
These are compatibility choices, not performance guarantees. Actual processing load depends on the media and encoding settings.
Understand what happens when the playlist repeats
Randomization happens when you generate the file list. Looping repeats that already-randomized order; it does not reshuffle after every pass. If you want a different order after a restart, generate a new playlist before restarting. If you want the same sequence, keep and reuse the existing script.
FFmpeg is the process sending the stream. If it exits, the computer shuts down, or the network connection fails, this basic playlist setup does not itself provide a complete process-supervision or reconnection system. Recovery after an interruption depends on how FFmpeg is run and the YouTube session state; test your restart procedure rather than assuming a long-running command will resume automatically.
Troubleshoot common problems
- FFmpeg rejects a file or errors at a transition: Compare its streams, codecs, and time bases with the other playlist entries. Normalize or re-encode incompatible files, then test transitions again.
- Files play in an unexpected order: Inspect the concat script. The order of its entries—not a separate shuffle performed by FFmpeg—defines the sequence.
- The playlist ends instead of repeating: Verify the input-loop option and its placement for your installed FFmpeg version. Options affect the next input or output, so a misplaced option may not do what you intend.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Confirm the current ingest URL and stream key in Live Control Room, check for accidental whitespace or a stale key, and verify the configured output and network access. Replace a key if it has been exposed.
- The live feed buffers or disconnects: Check whether upload bandwidth can sustain the configured bitrate. Reduce output settings to a supported target if necessary, and separately investigate network stability.
- FFmpeg stops and the stream goes offline: The playlist alone does not supervise or restart the FFmpeg process. Check its error output and your operating system’s process-management options; validate any restart arrangement with a test broadcast.
