FFmpeg’s reconnect_* options discussed here apply to its HTTP input protocol—not generally to the RTMP(S) output that publishes a stream to YouTube. Put the relevant options before the HTTP input’s -i. For a local prerecorded file, these HTTP options usually do not help with file-read failures; for a finite file, reaching EOF is normally expected, so leave -reconnect_at_eof off unless you explicitly want EOF treated as an error.
First identify what FFmpeg needs to reconnect to
A command that sends a prerecorded video to YouTube has separate stages: FFmpeg reads a source, encodes or passes through media, sends it to an ingest endpoint, and YouTube processes the event. A failure in one stage is not necessarily fixed by reconnecting another.

FFmpeg documents the options in its HTTP protocol documentation. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes RTMP/RTMPS ingest. Check the exact FFmpeg build, output protocol, and event configuration you will use.
Choose reconnect behavior for an HTTP input
These options are not a universal recipe to switch on wholesale. Select them to match the source and the recovery behavior you want. The available options can differ by FFmpeg version or build; inspect the installed binary with ffmpeg -h protocol=http.

Place options before the matching input
For an HTTP-hosted video, an illustrative command fragment is:
ffmpeg -reconnect 1 -reconnect_streamed 1 -reconnect_delay_max 30
-i 'https://example.invalid/video.mp4'
... your chosen codecs, mappings, and YouTube output ...The options precede the -i for the HTTP source because they configure that input. The example URL and delay are illustrative; replace the URL with your actual source and choose limits for your use case. The omitted encoding, mapping, and output arguments must be configured separately for your media and YouTube event.

For a finite prerecorded file that should play once and finish, do not add -reconnect_at_eof 1 unless you intentionally want EOF to trigger a retry. For a local path such as /path/to/video.mp4, these HTTP-specific flags usually are not the remedy for local I/O errors.
Keep input recovery separate from YouTube publishing recovery
Putting HTTP reconnect options before an HTTP input does not, by itself, reconnect an RTMP(S) output, resume a stopped YouTube event, or ensure gapless video for viewers. Decide in advance what the production should do if the FFmpeg process or publishing connection stops:

- Finish: allow the prerecorded item and event to end normally.
- Restart: start the item or event again from its beginning if that is acceptable.
- Resume: continue from a known position, if your workflow supports and has tested that behavior.
- Escalate: alert an operator or switch to an independent backup/failover process.
These are different recovery requirements. Test the chosen behavior with a non-public or unlisted test event and representative media; do not infer output recovery from successful input retries.
Verify YouTube ingest and encoder settings
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. It lists AAC or MP3 audio. Use the current bitrate table on that page for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than assuming one bitrate fits every combination. YouTube recommends RTMPS and says it automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats.

In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the event and use its stream URL and stream key in the encoder configuration. The live stream settings guidance covers managing those settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not expose it in public command examples, screenshots, shared scripts, or logs. If it is compromised, rotate it through YouTube Studio. Avoid putting secrets in shell history or command lines where practical.

YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing beforehand with representative audio and motion, previewing the incoming stream, monitoring stream health and messages, setting up ahead of time, and testing encoder failover. YouTube also recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; that is operational guidance, not a measured guarantee of success.

- Identify whether the source is local or HTTP-hosted, and whether it is finite or endless.
- Check the installed FFmpeg version and available HTTP options with
ffmpeg -h protocol=http. - Confirm the output protocol, event URL and key, codecs, bitrate, keyframe interval, resolution, frame rate, and audio format.
- Run a representative segment and verify the intended behavior at EOF.
- In a controlled test, interrupt the source or network. Observe whether the input recovers, whether publishing remains connected, and what the test event shows viewers.
- Preview the event, monitor stream health, and test any independent backup or failover process.
- Keep the stream key private and ensure someone knows how to respond if the event stops.
Troubleshoot common symptoms
