You can send a video file from a Synology NAS to YouTube Live with FFmpeg if your exact NAS model and DSM setup can run a compatible FFmpeg build. Create a YouTube live event, copy its current ingest URL and private stream key, then run FFmpeg with real-time input pacing and an RTMPS destination. Synology hardware, DSM releases, CPU architectures and available codecs vary, so verify compatibility and test encoding on your device before relying on it.

Before you start: check the NAS and YouTube setup

This workflow is for streaming a prerecorded media file from the NAS, not for broadcasting a camera feed. No universal Synology model or DSM compatibility matrix is established here; confirm what your specific device supports before choosing an installation method.

  • Check whether your model and DSM release can run FFmpeg, either as an available native binary/package or in a supported container.
  • For a container, verify that Container Manager is available for your NAS, that the image supports its CPU architecture, and that the image includes the codecs and protocols you need.
  • Make sure the NAS can read the media file and that its network connection has sufficient sustained upload capacity.
  • Have a YouTube channel and a live event ready in YouTube Live Control Room. You need the event’s current ingestion URL and stream key.

Native/binary and container setups are alternatives, not universal recommendations. Compare them on exact DSM/model availability, architecture and codec support, access to media paths, stream-key protection, restart and log handling, and sustained encoding performance. No performance ceiling for a particular Synology model is established; measure yours.

Create the YouTube event and protect its stream key

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live event you intend to use.
  2. Copy the ingestion URL and stream key shown for that event. YouTube’s Live API supports entering the ingestion URL and stream name separately or combining them as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME; use the actual values provided for your stream, not an example destination.
  3. Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your event. Avoid posting it in a public script, screenshot, log or support message. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube before streaming again.
  4. Confirm that the YouTube broadcast itself is configured and ready in Live Control Room. An FFmpeg process delivering media and the audience-facing broadcast are distinct resources; a running encoder alone does not guarantee that viewers can see a live broadcast.

Choose a compatible FFmpeg installation

The available FFmpeg route depends on your NAS and DSM release. A container can be convenient where Container Manager is supported, but do not assume an image for one Synology CPU architecture will work on another. A native or standalone binary also needs to match the device and include the required encoders, muxer and network protocol support.

On the NAS, inspect the FFmpeg build’s available encoders and protocols before using the command below. It assumes libx264, AAC encoding, FLV muxing and RTMPS support. If any are absent, the command will fail; choose a build that supports them or adapt the encoding approach to the capabilities of the build and input.

Run a looping file stream with FFmpeg

FFmpeg documents real-time streaming with -re, an FLV output and an RTMP-family destination; it also documents -stream_loop -1 for repeating an input indefinitely. The following is an illustrative command shape, not a tested Synology command:

  • Dual 2.5GbE ports provide fast network transfer speeds and increased redundancy.

  • Backed by Synology's 3-year limited hardware warranty.
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i /path/to/video.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 5000k -maxrate 5000k -bufsize 10000k
  -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv
  'rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST_HOST/YOUTUBE_APP/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'

Replace the input path with a readable media-file path on your NAS. Replace the destination with the current RTMPS ingestion address and key information from YouTube Live Control Room; the placeholder host and path above must not be copied literally. Shell quoting and whether the URL can contain the key depend on the destination format YouTube supplies and the environment used to run FFmpeg.

What the key options do

  • -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. It applies to the input that follows it.
  • -re reads the file at approximately real-time speed instead of sending it as fast as the NAS can process it.
  • -c:v libx264 encodes video as H.264 if that encoder is present in the build; -preset veryfast trades compression efficiency for lower encoding effort.
  • -b:v, -maxrate and -bufsize set the example video bitrate, rate ceiling and rate-control buffer. These are sample values, not a universal YouTube target.
  • -g 60 and -keyint_min 60 set a 60-frame keyframe interval. The example assumes 30 frames per second, making the interval two seconds. Adjust it for the actual frame rate.
  • -sc_threshold 0 disables scene-cut keyframe insertion in this example so the GOP interval remains predictable.
  • -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 encodes AAC audio at the shown sample rate and bitrate. If the source has no audio, adapt the command rather than assuming an audio stream exists.
  • -f flv selects the output container commonly used for RTMP-family delivery.

If your source already has codecs and a container that YouTube accepts, stream-copying may reduce encoding load, but only use it when the input codecs, container, frame rate, keyframes and destination are appropriate. Otherwise, encode and confirm that the NAS can sustain the chosen settings without dropped frames.

Set resolution, frame rate and bitrate together

YouTube’s encoder-settings page lists the following H.264 ingestion bitrates. These are YouTube’s minimum and recommended values on the page reviewed 2026-10-03, not guarantees about what a Synology NAS can encode or what your internet connection can sustain.

Output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

Choose settings that fit both the source and the NAS. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS delivery and lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, with AAC or MP3 audio and CBR guidance. H.264 with AAC is a practical baseline for SDR when the FFmpeg build supports it. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. The example command’s 60-frame GOP fits that guidance only at 30 fps.

Measure reliable upload capacity from the network connection the NAS actually uses and leave headroom; a bitrate near the connection’s fluctuating limit can cause instability. YouTube recommends testing upload capacity and selecting a reliable bitrate. Its current encoder settings are at YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Use RTMPS and verify the connection

YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live streaming. Use the RTMPS address supplied for the actual event when the FFmpeg build supports it. Google’s implementation guidance specifies port 443 and SNI/hostname requirements; some ready-made builds handle those details internally, while TLS behavior may vary by build.

If you see a connection or TLS error, check that the destination begins with rtmps, outbound port 443 is reachable, and the FFmpeg build supports TLS and the required hostname/SNI behavior. Do not switch to cleartext RTMP against an RTMPS endpoint: Google notes that this mismatch can time out. YouTube’s current guidance says, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.”

Test before the event and monitor stream health

  1. Run a preflight with the same media type, audio and motion you expect to stream. YouTube recommends a test with representative audio and movement before going live.
  2. Check FFmpeg’s output for input, encoder and connection errors, and confirm the NAS is not dropping frames or falling behind real time.
  3. Inspect the event in YouTube Live Control Room for incoming video, audio and stream-health messages.
  4. Monitor the stream while it runs. YouTube’s stream resource can report states such as active, inactive and error, with configuration issues including low bitrate, unsupported audio codec and keyframe intervals that are too long.
  5. Confirm that the broadcast is started and visible as intended in Live Control Room; do not treat a connected FFmpeg process as proof the audience-facing event is live.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
YouTube receives no video Wrong event destination, incomplete URL/key combination, or event not ready Copy the current ingestion URL and key again from Live Control Room; use the complete destination format YouTube provides and confirm the event is configured.
Connection times out or TLS fails Wrong protocol, blocked outbound port, or FFmpeg TLS/SNI incompatibility Use the event’s RTMPS endpoint, check outbound port 443 and hostname/SNI handling, and verify the local build’s TLS support.
YouTube reports low or high bitrate Configured bitrate is mismatched to the resolution/frame rate or fluctuating upload Use the relevant H.264 guidance table as a starting point, then choose a stable bitrate based on measured upload capacity.
Audio warning or no audio Unsupported codec, sample-rate issue, absent audio stream, or incorrect mapping Check the source’s audio streams and YouTube health details; use a supported AAC or MP3 configuration and a suitable sample rate.
Keyframe/GOP warning Keyframes are too far apart or the interval does not match the output frame rate Set a two-second interval, no longer than four seconds, and calculate the frame count from the actual output fps.
NAS drops frames or stream falls behind Encoding load exceeds sustained device capacity, or network upload is unstable Measure performance on the exact device; reduce resolution or frame rate, select a less demanding encoding preset, or stream-copy only if the input is compatible.
Video loops but the event ends or is not public FFmpeg delivery and YouTube broadcast state are separate Check the event’s broadcast configuration and start state in Live Control Room.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules still apply

Sending a prerecorded file through FFmpeg does not grant rights to its music, footage or other material. Use content you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream policies before scheduling a long-running stream. A successful connection or healthy encoder is not a determination that the content is eligible for monetization or compliant with YouTube policy.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want the YouTube stream to continue without keeping a Synology NAS or computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube. Upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; automatic recovery can restart delivery if YouTube drops the stream.

Each slot streams the file as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly access is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos on YouTube, not a live camera feed. See StreamNeo or its plan details. To try it, start the free first day.
