The Indian rupee sign is Unicode U+20B9; a font-family name alone does not prove the font file contains it. The exact cause depends on the invoice HTML, CSS, font asset, and PDFShift request.
1. Confirm the invoice contains the correct character
Check the amount in the template data and the HTML sent for conversion. The Indian rupee sign is ₹, U+20B9. It is distinct from ₨, U+20A8, an older rupee sign not formally tied to a particular currency.
If your template or encoding path makes the literal character difficult to verify, try the HTML character reference ₹ or ₹. Inspect the decoded text in a browser before sending it to PDFShift. If the sign is already absent there, correct the source data or template first; PDF rendering cannot restore a character that was never present.
2. Check that the PDF font has a rupee glyph
A CSS declaration such as font-family: InvoiceFont selects a family name, but does not establish that the actual font file includes U+20B9. Use a font file that supports the Indian rupee sign, and check that the relevant CSS rule applies to the amount. Also look for a later or more specific rule that overrides it.

PDFShift documents custom fonts through CSS supplied with the conversion request. Its example demonstrates how to define a font; it does not certify that the example family contains the rupee glyph. Verify the exact font file you use. See PDFShift’s custom-font guidance.
Example font rule
Adapt the font URL and family name to a font file you have verified supports U+20B9:

3. Make font loading reliable before conversion
PDFShift says locally hosted font URLs and base64-encoded font files load faster than external fonts. It also warns that external fonts may not have loaded when conversion starts, producing intermittent results. If an external font is unreliable, use a reachable local asset or embed the font as base64 in the CSS, subject to your font’s licensing terms. Consult the vendor’s custom-font instructions for the supported request setup.

If the font loads asynchronously, configure PDFShift to wait until the browser reports that font loading is ready. The vendor documents a wait_for function using document.fonts.ready. For example, define a function in the page or through the PDFShift javascript setting, then set wait_for to call it:

Waiting uses part of the conversion time budget. PDFShift’s cited guide lists a 30-second timeout for free accounts and 100 seconds for premium accounts; account limits can change, so verify the current documentation before relying on those values.
5. Compare the browser page with the generated PDF
Use this diagnostic branch to locate which layer needs attention. It is an inference from PDFShift’s font and wait guidance, not a vendor-prescribed root-cause test.

- Open the rendered invoice HTML in a browser. Confirm the amount displays ₹, not a blank, replacement box, or a different character.
- If the browser is missing ₹, fix the input text, character encoding, or CSS before changing PDFShift settings.
- If the browser shows ₹ but the PDF does not, verify the font file actually loaded by the conversion environment and that it contains U+20B9.
- If the font supports the glyph, make its delivery reliable and wait for asynchronous font loading before conversion.
- Regenerate and inspect the PDF. Keep the HTML, CSS, font asset, request settings, and output available when investigating a failure that remains.
