The goal is not maximum compression: choose a codec and bitrate that preserve the picture you need while staying within your encoder’s capacity, your reliable upload bandwidth, and the platform’s current requirements. Too little bitrate can make motion and detail look visibly worse; too much for your connection can cause unstable delivery.
What “compressing video” means for a live stream
People use “compress” to mean two related things: encoding a live camera or gameplay feed into a streamable format, and reducing its bitrate or file size. A live broadcast needs encoding. The practical choice is how to balance codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, visual quality, processing load, and upload capacity.
A codec’s efficiency affects how much visual detail it can preserve at a given bitrate. A more efficient codec may deliver similar quality with fewer bits, but only if the platform accepts it and viewers’ playback paths support it. Check the destination’s current documentation before choosing a less common format. YouTube’s codec comparison discusses the tradeoffs among H.264, VP9, and HEVC: YouTube Live Streaming Ingestion Protocol Comparison.
Pros of compression
- It makes live delivery practical. Encoding turns video into a stream format and bitrate a platform can ingest, rather than trying to send raw video. YouTube publishes supported encoder settings and advises creators to choose settings their connection can sustain: YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- It reduces network demand. Compression makes a stream easier to send over a finite upload connection. Google says VP9 and HEVC can offer better compression than H.264, potentially allowing higher quality at a given bitrate or comparable quality at a lower bitrate. The benefit depends on platform and playback support; it is not a guaranteed bandwidth-saving percentage.
- It can support viewers on different connections and devices. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into output formats for viewers. OBS describes transcoding as creating feeds at different resolutions, frame rates, and bitrates. The availability of viewer renditions varies by service, so do not assume every platform or account offers the same choices. See OBS’s explanation of transcoding.
- It gives you a bandwidth-versus-compute tradeoff. Encoder choices and presets shift work between the CPU, dedicated hardware, bitrate, and image quality. Hardware encoding such as NVENC is one option, not a universal upgrade; results depend on hardware generation, settings, and workload. Twitch discusses both NVENC and x264 in its Broadcasting Guidelines.
Cons and tradeoffs
- Too much compression damages the picture. Lowering bitrate too far can discard visible detail. Fast motion, foliage, fine textures, particle effects, and camera noise tend to expose artifacts sooner than a static scene. Test representative movement and audio, not just a still screen; YouTube recommends tests with similar audio and motion to the planned stream.
- Encoding consumes resources. Real-time encoding must keep up with the incoming video. Software encoding can load the CPU; hardware encoding uses dedicated hardware, but neither is automatically best in every system or at every quality setting.
- An ambitious bitrate can destabilize delivery. A bitrate your connection cannot sustain may cause dropped frames or interruptions. Twitch notes that raising bitrate improves quality only up to a point and recommends tested settings rather than wasting bandwidth. OBS identifies dropped frames or intermittent disconnections as signs of a network problem between the computer and ingest server: OBS stream connection troubleshooting.
- Codec support is not universal. Efficiency does not help if the platform will not ingest the codec or viewers cannot play it reliably. Confirm current platform requirements and device support before relying on a less common option.
What bitrate should you stream at?
There is no single best bitrate for every stream. Use the destination’s current recommended range as your starting point, then account for resolution, frame rate, motion and detail, encoder capability, and stable upload capacity. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) in its encoder guidance; Twitch recommends CBR whenever possible.

Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
Measure upload speed as a starting point, not a promise of sustained capacity. Leave headroom rather than assigning the full measured upload rate to the stream, especially on a shared or variable connection. If capacity is tight, a lower resolution or frame rate may look cleaner than trying to push a high-resolution, high-frame-rate stream at an inadequate bitrate. That is a practical tradeoff: the platform’s guidance links quality to bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and connection reliability.
Do not chase the largest bitrate the settings menu allows. Twitch’s guidance puts it plainly: “Increasing your bitrate can improve your video quality, but only up to a certain point– our recommended bitrate settings have been tested to optimize video quality without wasting bandwidth.” Follow the current settings for your destination rather than treating a number from another platform or an older guide as universal.

CBR or VBR for live streaming?
Start with the destination’s guidance. YouTube currently recommends CBR, and Twitch recommends CBR whenever possible. CBR aims to keep the stream’s bitrate steady, which suits predictable live delivery. Variable bitrate (VBR) can vary the data rate with scene complexity, but whether it is suitable depends on the platform’s ingest requirements and your encoder. Do not switch to VBR simply because it may use fewer bits in easier scenes; verify that the destination supports the setting and test the actual stream.
Does YouTube or Twitch compress your stream again?
A platform may transcode an incoming live stream into viewer renditions. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams so viewers on different devices and networks can watch; OBS’s overview notes that transcoding practices differ among services. This is separate from your own encoding: you still need to send a supported, stable stream. Do not assume that every platform, account, or broadcast will provide multiple quality options without checking current platform rules.

How to choose settings and test them
- Check the destination’s current requirements. Confirm accepted codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate guidance, keyframe requirements, and rate-control recommendations in its official documentation. YouTube’s current guide is Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions; Twitch’s is Broadcasting Guidelines.
- Choose a bitrate your connection can reliably sustain. Use an upload-speed test as an estimate, leave headroom for variation and other network use, and prefer stability over a peak result.
- Match resolution and frame rate to the content. Fast movement and fine detail need more data than a talking head or slides at comparable settings. If the available bitrate is limited, reduce resolution or frame rate rather than forcing settings your connection cannot maintain.
- Pick a supported codec and encoder. Compare compatibility alongside efficiency and encoding load. Neither the newest codec nor hardware encoding is automatically the right option for every platform and system.
- Run a representative test before the event. Include similar movement and audio, check stream health, and adjust settings based on what you see. YouTube Help says: “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
- If frames drop, troubleshoot the network path. Check the connection to the ingest server and lower bitrate if the link cannot sustain it. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide covers network-focused causes and fixes; lowering bitrate can improve stability, but may reduce picture quality.
How to compare two encoders or settings
Compare options using the same representative scene and destination, rather than relying on broad claims such as “hardware encoding is always worse” or “HEVC is always best.” Look at:
- Perceived picture quality at the same bitrate.
- The bitrate needed to reach acceptable quality.
- CPU or GPU load, and whether the encoder keeps up in real time.
- Compatibility with platform ingest and viewer devices.
- Stability on the actual upload connection.
- Which viewer renditions the destination makes available.
Test with representative movement and audio because a static image can hide problems that become obvious during the broadcast.
