To send a video playlist to YouTube Live around the clock from Docker, run FFmpeg in a long-lived container, make the playlist files available inside it, and publish to the current ingest address and stream key for your YouTube Live stream. YouTube’s feed (the incoming stream) and the viewer-facing live video (the broadcast) are separate resources, so configure and monitor both.

How the Docker-to-YouTube setup fits together

The host runs Docker; a container runs FFmpeg; a mounted directory supplies the media; and FFmpeg sends the resulting audio/video feed to YouTube. Your stream key is a credential used to publish that feed, not the public URL viewers use to watch. YouTube models the incoming feed as a liveStream and the viewer-facing video as a separate liveBroadcast. Its API guide describes a 24/7 broadcast use case: completing an associated interview broadcast does not stop the continuing 24/7 broadcast. YouTube explains how broadcasts and streams relate.

Before you start

  • A YouTube channel able to stream live, with a stream selected or created in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
  • A Docker-capable host with reliable network access and enough storage for your media.
  • An FFmpeg image or build that supports the media formats and ingest protocol you plan to use.
  • A playlist and its source files, arranged so the container can read them.
  • The current ingest address and stream key/name shown for that YouTube stream. Settings are specific to the stream; do not copy an endpoint or key from an unrelated example.

Find the channel’s current ingest details in YouTube Studio or through the API. The LiveStreams API reference describes the ingestion address, stream name, and available backup address. Treat the stream key as a password: do not commit it to a public repository, bake it into an image, or expose it in routine logs. Inject it at runtime using an environment or secret mechanism appropriate to your deployment.

Build the playlist input for FFmpeg

Mount media into the container

Keep the media on the host or another storage location that the host can access, then mount its directory into the container. A read-only mount is a sensible default when FFmpeg only needs to play the files. Confirm the paths from inside the container rather than assuming host paths are also container paths.

Choose a playlist method that matches the files

FFmpeg can sequence inputs or read a playlist, but the right approach depends on your files, their codecs, durations, timestamps, and whether audio and video should advance together. A community 24/7 implementation illustrates a pattern using looped local inputs and an RTMP output, but it is an example rather than a universal command reference: 24/7 YouTube Stream — Setup & Ops Notes.

Do not assume that different files can always be concatenated or stream-copied unchanged. Mixed resolutions, frame rates, codecs, audio layouts, or timestamp behavior may require normalizing and re-encoding the output. Test the actual files and transitions with your chosen FFmpeg build before leaving the stream unattended. There is no single reliable FFmpeg command for every playlist.

Choose an ingest protocol

For a conventional FFmpeg-to-YouTube workflow, RTMPS is a practical default when the FFmpeg build and the selected YouTube stream support it. YouTube describes RTMPS as encrypted and suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency. RTMP is also supported, but YouTube’s comparison does not describe it as encrypted. See YouTube’s ingestion protocol comparison.

Protocol Encryption and latency When it may fit
RTMPS Encrypted; supports normal, low, and ultra-low latency according to YouTube. A conventional continuous FFmpeg ingest, if supported by your encoder and stream settings.
RTMP YouTube supports it; the comparison does not identify it as encrypted. Use only when it matches the stream’s current settings and your requirements.
HLS Encrypted; segment-based delivery has higher latency than continuous RTMP-style delivery. Supports H.264 and HEVC, as well as HDR, per YouTube’s comparison. Consider it when its codec/HDR support matters and your encoder can produce the required HLS output.

Do not hard-code an ingest hostname or assume every stream key accepts the same protocol. Use the primary address and any protocol-specific details supplied for the intended stream. YouTube’s HLS setup requires HTTPS, TS segments, a rolling media playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and segment durations from 1 to 4 seconds. Details are in YouTube’s HLS setup instructions.

Run FFmpeg in a long-lived Docker container

  1. Prepare the image. Use a maintained FFmpeg image or build one pinned to a version that includes the required codecs and protocol support. Confirm its FFmpeg build configuration rather than assuming every image supports RTMPS or your media formats.
  2. Mount the media. Bind-mount the playlist and source files at the paths expected by your FFmpeg configuration; prefer read-only access when playback is the only need.
  3. Provide configuration and secrets at runtime. Supply the playlist configuration and current YouTube ingest details without writing the stream key into the image or a checked-in Compose file. Keep secrets out of logs and access-controlled deployment output.
  4. Start the container and inspect its logs. Check that FFmpeg opens every input, produces audio/video, and connects to the intended YouTube ingest address. Resolve input or connection errors before treating the pipeline as live.
  5. Set a restart policy appropriate to the host. Docker restart policies can restart an exited container. Docker documents the behavior in Start containers automatically. A restart policy supervises container lifetime; it does not guarantee a seamless YouTube reconnect, continuation at the prior playlist position, or restoration of the intended broadcast state.

Test the feed and keep it healthy

  1. Start with a private, unlisted, or otherwise suitable test broadcast if the channel permits it.
  2. Watch the actual YouTube output and inspect stream health and configuration issues in the Live Control Room. The API exposes health and configuration information, including examples such as low video bitrate, a frame-rate mismatch, and no audio stream; see the LiveStreams API reference.
  3. Verify audio, picture, and transitions across every playlist item. Test at least one full playlist cycle, including any change between files with different properties.
  4. Force a container restart during testing. Confirm that FFmpeg reconnects, determine whether the playlist starts over or resumes, and check that the YouTube broadcast returns to the state you expect.
  5. Monitor FFmpeg logs for process exits and network errors, and monitor YouTube’s incoming stream health. Docker restarting a process is not proof that the feed has recovered.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
FFmpeg cannot open a playlist item The file is missing from the container path, permissions are insufficient, or the playlist refers to host paths. Check the mounted directory, container-visible paths, file permissions, and playlist entries from inside the container.
YouTube does not receive the feed The endpoint or stream key is stale or mismatched, the chosen protocol is unsupported by the FFmpeg build, or network access fails. Retrieve current stream settings in YouTube Studio, verify the protocol/build, and inspect FFmpeg connection errors. Keep the key private while debugging.
Picture or audio drops at a file transition The inputs differ in codec, resolution, frame rate, audio layout, or timestamps. Test each transition; use an input/concat strategy appropriate to the media and normalize or re-encode when necessary.
YouTube reports low bitrate, a frame-rate mismatch, or missing audio The encoded output does not match the stream’s expected configuration, or an input lacks the expected track. Check YouTube’s stream health and configuration details, then inspect FFmpeg’s output settings and input tracks.
The container restarts but the live feed remains down Process restart and ingest recovery are separate; FFmpeg may not reconnect as expected or YouTube may not be in the desired broadcast state. Review logs, test reconnect behavior deliberately, and verify both the incoming stream and viewer-facing broadcast in YouTube.
HLS ingest is rejected or delayed Segment format, duration, playlist window, HTTPS delivery, or latency expectations may not meet YouTube’s requirements. Compare the output with YouTube’s HLS requirements and account for its higher segment-based latency.

Account for YouTube rules and ongoing operation

A successful Docker pipeline only means that media is being sent; it does not establish that you have rights to stream every playlist item or that YouTube will approve the channel or content for monetization. Use media you own or are authorized to broadcast, and review the channel’s applicable copyright and reused-content requirements. Keep the broadcast and stream configuration aligned in YouTube Studio, and periodically verify the feed rather than treating a restart policy as a substitute for monitoring.
