Transfer the folder to the VPS first; then either upload its videos individually to YouTube or use an encoder on the VPS to broadcast them as a YouTube Live stream. Those are separate workflows: copying files to a server does not publish or stream them. The best transfer method depends on where the files are now, your operating system, VPS access, folder size and connection reliability—there is no single India-specific command or guaranteed transfer speed.
Choose what you mean by “upload to YouTube”
- Publish individual videos: move the files to the VPS if that is part of your workflow, then use YouTube’s video-upload process for each video. You can also upload from the original computer; staging on a VPS is not required by YouTube.
- Broadcast prerecorded video as a live stream: run a compatible encoder on the VPS, use the transferred videos as its inputs, and send the live output to YouTube. YouTube describes an encoder as software that converts video into a digital format it can receive. Its encoder setup page lists OBS as an option: YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
Decide which outcome you need before copying a large library. The live-stream route requires an encoder and a channel ready to stream; the archived-upload route publishes videos as videos, not as a continuous live broadcast.
Plan the transfer before starting
Identify the source and destination
If the folder is on a local computer, transfer it to the VPS using a secure file-transfer method supported by your operating system and server access. If it is already in cloud storage, a tool that supports both the source and destination may copy it directly. Check that the VPS has enough free disk space for the files and any temporary working space your upload or encoder workflow needs.
The available setup details do not establish one universally suitable tool or command for every India-to-VPS transfer. Confirm the VPS region, storage, sustained transfer allowance and acceptable use with the provider. A route from your ISP to a VPS, and then from that VPS to YouTube, can perform differently; do not infer a specific upload duration from the fact that you are in India.

Account for file count as well as total size
A folder containing many small files can behave differently from a few large files. For example, rclone’s Google Drive backend documentation notes a limitation of about two files per second under Drive’s rate limits; this is a documented constraint, not a guaranteed speed for every account or transfer. Its Drive documentation also says its shared client ID is being retired during 2026 and directs users to create their own: rclone Google Drive backend documentation. Check the current instructions when configuring rclone.
Estimate each network leg separately
For a local-to-VPS transfer, use the sustained throughput you actually observe on that connection and the total bytes to estimate the copy time. For a VPS-to-YouTube upload, assess that leg separately. File size, available bandwidth, congestion and the service’s current limits all affect completion time. YouTube likewise says upload time depends on file size, internet bandwidth, upload traffic, format and quality; higher-quality files such as 4K take longer than 1080p files. It does not establish a particular India-to-VPS speed or duration in its upload guidance: YouTube video upload help.

Transfer the folder to the VPS
- Check access and capacity. Confirm that you can connect to the VPS, have permission to write to the intended directory, and have enough disk space for the folder. If the provider imposes outbound data or storage limits, check those before beginning.
- Choose a transfer method supported at both ends. Use a secure remote file-transfer option appropriate to your computer’s operating system and the VPS. If the files are in a supported cloud service, a tool such as rclone can copy between supported endpoints; follow that tool’s current setup instructions for your service.
- Copy to a dedicated directory. Keep the library in a clear location so the encoder or upload workflow can find the files. If the connection is unreliable, choose a method that can resume or repeat a transfer without needlessly sending completed files again, where supported.
- Verify before proceeding. Compare the expected file list and sizes with what arrived on the VPS. Open or inspect representative files, and check for missing, truncated or unreadable files before starting a long upload or broadcast.
This transfer step only places files on the server. It does not create YouTube video uploads, enable a live stream or configure an encoder.
If you want to publish the videos as individual YouTube uploads
Use browser upload for a straightforward workflow
Open YouTube’s upload page, select the video file and complete the publishing flow. If a browser upload stops, YouTube says you can return to the upload page and select the same file to continue where it left off, for up to 24 hours. If an upload is simply slow, YouTube recommends letting it finish rather than stopping it. See YouTube’s upload guidance for the current interface and requirements.

Use resumable uploads for an application workflow
For software uploading through the YouTube Data API, the resumable protocol is designed to make uploads more reliable. The client starts an upload session, saves the session URI, sends the file bytes, and can query the session after an interruption. When the API returns 308 Resume Incomplete with a Range header, resume from the next byte reported as accepted—do not skip bytes or overlap the accepted range. The session URI is temporary, so an interrupted session should not be left idle indefinitely. Follow the API’s current protocol documentation: YouTube Data API resumable upload protocol.
YouTube’s documentation states: “You can upload videos more reliably by using the resumable upload protocol for Google APIs.” This applies to the API-based workflow; it is not a command for copying a folder to a VPS.

If you want the VPS to broadcast prerecorded files as YouTube Live
Prepare the channel before the broadcast
Enable live streaming on the YouTube channel and allow time for activation. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours. Then follow YouTube’s encoder setup to obtain and configure the stream key, keeping that key private: anyone who obtains it could send a stream to the associated destination. The exact setup can change, so use YouTube’s current encoder instructions.
Configure the encoder on the VPS
Install and run an encoder compatible with your video files and the VPS operating system. Configure it to read the intended file or playlist, encode or package the video for YouTube as required by your chosen workflow, and send the output using the channel’s stream key. The VPS is the computer running the encoder; the transferred files are its inputs. A VPS provider’s hardware and network capacity must be suitable for that workload, but YouTube’s encoder page does not endorse a VPS provider or establish that any particular plan has sufficient capacity.

Do not assume that a folder copy alone creates a playlist or looping broadcast. Set up and test how the encoder selects the next file, handles the end of a file, and responds to a dropped connection. Confirm the intended video and audio are reaching the YouTube live control room before relying on the stream.
Check rights and channel requirements
Only broadcast or upload material you have the rights and permissions to use. A successful file transfer does not clear copyright, and running prerecorded material as a live stream does not change the underlying rights. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies for the specific content and channel before publishing; no account-specific restriction or policy outcome can be determined from the transfer workflow alone.

| Route | Useful when | Trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer from a local computer to the VPS | The files are already on your computer and the VPS must run the upload or encoder workflow. | There is an extra network transfer before the VPS can use the files; performance depends on the source-to-VPS connection. |
| Copy from cloud storage to the VPS | The folder is already stored in a service supported by your transfer tool. | Service limits, API configuration and file count can affect the copy; cloud storage does not automatically publish files to YouTube. |
| Upload from the original computer to YouTube | You want individual published videos and do not need the VPS for that upload. | The computer’s upload connection and browser or API workflow determine progress; a VPS staging step may be unnecessary. |
| Use the VPS as a live encoder | You want prerecorded files broadcast as a live stream. | Requires channel readiness, encoder setup, a private stream key and adequate VPS capacity and outbound network service. |
Troubleshooting transfer and YouTube workflow problems
The folder copy stops or takes longer than expected
- Possible cause: an unstable source-to-VPS connection, congestion, or a large number of small files.
- What to do: use a transfer method with resume support if available, check which files arrived, and retry missing files. If copying through Google Drive with rclone, consult its current backend notes on rate limitations and client-ID setup.
Files are missing or cannot be read on the VPS
- Possible cause: the transfer ended early, the destination lacked space, or a file did not arrive intact.
- What to do: compare the source and destination file lists and sizes, check available disk space, and transfer the affected files again before scheduling an upload or stream.
A YouTube browser upload stops
- Possible cause: interruption in the upload process.
- What to do: return to YouTube’s upload page and select the same file to continue, within YouTube’s stated 24-hour continuation window. If it is only slow, YouTube advises letting it finish.
An API upload does not resume where expected
- Possible cause: the client did not retain the session URI, did not query the accepted range, resumed at the wrong byte, or allowed the session to expire.
- What to do: follow the resumable protocol, query the session status, and continue from the next unaccepted byte. If the session is no longer valid, start a new upload session.
The live stream does not start or stops
- Possible cause: first-time live access is not enabled yet, the stream key or encoder configuration is wrong, or the VPS cannot sustain the workload or connection.
- What to do: verify channel live-stream readiness, check the encoder setup and stream key, inspect the provider’s current capacity and transfer terms, and confirm the output in YouTube’s live control room. Never disclose the stream key when requesting support.
