A webpage can display a web font without the browser using that font—or embedding it—in the PDF. The result can vary with the browser and operating system, so a correct-looking preview alone is not proof that the font is embedded.
Save a webpage as a PDF
- Load the page and wait. Give its text and visible content time to settle. If the page uses a remotely hosted font, the browser may need to fetch it before displaying the intended typography.
- Open the browser’s Print dialog. In Firefox, choose Save to PDF as the destination. Other browsers and operating systems may label or arrange their print controls differently.
- Review the print preview. Check that the page breaks, text, and typography look acceptable. Adjust available settings such as paper size, scale, margins, headers and footers, or backgrounds. Options vary by platform and output format. Mozilla’s Firefox printing guide describes its print workflow and controls.
- Save the PDF. Open the resulting file rather than relying only on the preview.
- Check font properties. If embedding is a requirement, inspect the PDF’s font properties in a PDF reader or font-inspection utility. Visual appearance on the computer that created the PDF does not prove the font is embedded: that computer may already have the font installed.
Why a web font may change in the PDF
Web-font loading and PDF font embedding are separate things. A page can use @font-face to load a font from a URL (or use a local font), but that CSS rule does not determine what font resources the browser puts into a PDF. MDN’s @font-face reference explains the web-font mechanism.
Adobe Fonts warns that browser and operating-system support for printing web fonts can vary. In its support article, last updated July 11, 2023, Adobe says: “If you print a page from a browser or operating system that does not support printing with web fonts, the page will print with the fallback fonts specified in your font stack.” Adobe Fonts: Printing web fonts
As a result, a font that looks right in the browser can be replaced by a fallback in the print output. WOFF2 is generally a good modern format for web delivery, but the format used on the page does not guarantee that a browser will embed that font in its PDF.

If the font changed when you printed the webpage
- Wait for the page to finish rendering. Reload it, allow time for remote fonts and visible content to load, then open Print again.
- Compare another browser’s print output. Browser and operating-system combinations differ; another route may handle the page’s web fonts differently. Do not assume any one browser universally embeds every web font.
- Check the saved file, not just the preview. A preview helps judge layout, but inspect the PDF’s font properties to confirm embedding.
- Ask the publisher for a prepared document if consistency is essential. Adobe recommends offering a downloadable PDF or EPS made with the intended fonts as an alternative. The publisher must have the rights to distribute those fonts.
If you own the webpage: improve its print layout
A print stylesheet can make a page more readable on paper, but it is not a font-embedding switch. Use the print media type for print-only presentation rules, and @page to specify page dimensions, orientation, or margins. See MDN’s guide to printing with CSS.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a web font automatically become embedded when I save a page as a PDF?
No. A page may render with a web font while the PDF uses a fallback or otherwise does not embed that font. Inspect the saved PDF’s font properties.

Can I confirm font embedding by looking at the print preview?
No. The preview helps assess appearance and layout, but it does not establish whether fonts are embedded in the saved PDF.
