Save a webpage as a PDF with page numbers
Browser-generated page numbers usually come from the print dialog’s header-and-footer setting. Before saving, check the preview: a webpage may paginate differently on paper than it appears on screen, and margins or scaling can change where page breaks fall.
Google Chrome on a computer
- Open the webpage you want to save.
- Open Print from the File menu, or press Ctrl+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+P on Mac.
- Choose a PDF destination, such as Save as PDF, then open the additional print settings.
- Look for a header-and-footer option and enable it if available. Control labels and locations may vary by operating system or browser version.
- Check the preview to confirm that page numbers appear, then save the PDF.
Chrome Help explains how to print from Chrome and choose Save as PDF. If the preview does not show numbers, do not assume they will appear in the saved file.
Mozilla Firefox
- Open the page and choose Print.
- In the print preview, choose Save to PDF.
- Expand More settings and enable Print headers and footers.
- Set paper size, scale, margins, orientation, or background printing as needed; check the preview and save.
Firefox can format webpages differently for print than for the screen. On some pages, Simplified formatting is available; selecting it prevents selecting print backgrounds at the same time. See Mozilla’s Firefox printing instructions.

Microsoft Edge
- Open the webpage and choose Print from the menu, or press Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS.
- Open More settings and select Headers and footers.
- Choose the available PDF destination or saving flow, confirm the page number appears in the preview, and save.
Microsoft Support says this option “adds the current date to the document header & adds the page number to the footer.” Edge also offers scaling options, and Immersive Reader may reduce clutter on supported websites. See Microsoft’s Edge printing instructions.
Fix missing page numbers or awkward page breaks
- No page numbers in the preview: Confirm that headers and footers are enabled. In Chrome, look under additional print settings; in Firefox, use More settings; in Edge, select Headers and footers.
- Header or footer is cut off: Increase the margins. Chrome for Developers notes that browser-generated headers and footers can be suppressed when margins are zero or too small to leave room. See Chrome’s printing documentation.
- Text, tables, or images are clipped: Try a different paper size, reduce scale, or change orientation and margins. Recheck the preview after each adjustment.
- Content breaks in odd places: Webpages can use a print layout that differs from the screen layout. Review the preview and, after saving, inspect the PDF—especially long pages, tables, and images.
- The PDF looks cluttered: Edge’s Immersive Reader can help on websites where it is available; it is not a universal print feature.

Safari for Mac and mobile browser workflows are not covered by the verified instructions here. Do not assume Chrome, Firefox, or Edge menu paths apply; check the print preview and the documentation for your specific browser and device before relying on page numbers.
