If FFmpeg’s YouTube Live stream appears to show old frames while looping a video, first check that -stream_loop -1 comes before the file’s -i option and that file input is paced with -re. Then compare FFmpeg’s local output with YouTube playback and inspect YouTube’s stream-health messages. Those checks narrow down where the problem occurs; without your command, file details, logs, and stream-health data, the symptom alone does not establish a cause.

Check the loop and input pacing options

FFmpeg treats -stream_loop as an input option. Put it before the -i belonging to the file you want to repeat. The value -1 means to loop indefinitely. For a file feeding a live output, put -re before that input as well: FFmpeg documents it as reading at the file’s native frame rate, rather than consuming the file as fast as possible. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M
  -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv 'RTMPS_INGEST_URL/STREAM_NAME'

This is an illustrative starting point, not a tested fix or universal command. Replace the input filename and ingest placeholder; use the primary RTMPS ingest URL and assigned stream name for your YouTube stream. Never publish a live stream key. Adjust the codec and encoding options to your source, computer, desired output, and connection.

In this example, -g 60 means a 60-frame GOP, or two seconds at 30 fps. If you output at a different frame rate, choose a GOP that corresponds to the intended keyframe interval. The example’s 10 Mbps video bitrate is not suitable for every resolution, frame rate, or connection.

Check whether looping can return to the start cleanly

Some inputs cannot seek back to the beginning, and stream-copy looping depends on suitable keyframe and timestamp conditions. These are reasons to inspect the source and command, not proof that either explains your symptom. FFmpeg’s looping guide discusses these considerations. If the loop boundary is where the apparent staleness begins, note that timing in your logs and recordings instead of assuming the option placement is the only issue.

Locate where the old frames first appear

Compare the output at two points: what FFmpeg is producing locally and what YouTube is showing. If the local output is already stale, focus on the local input, loop behavior, timestamps, and encoding process. If it looks current locally but not on YouTube, inspect ingest health and the settings being sent. This comparison helps locate the stage to investigate; it does not by itself identify the underlying cause.

  1. Watch or record the local FFmpeg output. Check whether the repeated picture is already delayed or frozen before it reaches YouTube.
  2. Inspect FFmpeg’s logs. Look for output or input errors and timing information around the period when playback appears old. Preserve the complete command and relevant log lines.
  3. Check YouTube Live Control Room. Review the stream-health messages while live and compare them with what you see locally. YouTube recommends testing before a live stream and monitoring stream health during it.
  4. Record the evidence together. Keep the FFmpeg version, source format, command, relevant timestamps, local-output observation, and YouTube health messages. Those details are more useful for diagnosis than the symptom alone.

YouTube’s LiveStreams API documentation describes ingest addresses and stream status or health fields. Use the ingest URL and stream name assigned to your stream rather than exposing its key.

Compare encoder settings with YouTube’s guidance

YouTube’s encoder recommendations, checked October 3, 2026, list RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. Its H.264 table lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended video bitrate for 1080p30. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of a healthy stream. Select the table values for your actual resolution and frame rate, and ensure your connection can sustain the chosen bitrate. See YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance before changing a live configuration.

Settings to verify

  • Codec and frame rate: Confirm what FFmpeg is actually outputting, not just what you intended to configure. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, with up to 60 fps.
  • Rate control and bitrate: YouTube recommends CBR. For H.264 at 1080p30, its guidance is 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended; do not apply those figures automatically to another resolution, frame rate, or codec.
  • Keyframe interval: Check that the interval is about two seconds and does not exceed four seconds under YouTube’s guidance.
  • Audio: YouTube’s stereo audio guidance lists AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
  • Upload capacity: If the connection cannot reliably sustain the selected bitrate, lower the configured quality and test again.

Troubleshoot by symptom without guessing at the cause

What you observe What to check next
Old-looking frames are present in FFmpeg’s local output Recheck option placement and real-time pacing; inspect the input, loop boundary, timestamps, and FFmpeg logs. The symptom does not single out one of these as the cause.
Local output looks current, but YouTube playback appears old Check YouTube’s stream-health messages, ingest configuration, and whether the selected bitrate can be sustained by the upload connection.
The issue appears when the video restarts Verify that the file can seek back to its start and review keyframe and timestamp behavior around the boundary. Do not assume stream-copy looping is suitable without checking the source and command.
The stream’s settings differ from your intended settings Verify the actual codec, frame rate, bitrate, CBR configuration, and keyframe cadence in the FFmpeg output, then compare them with YouTube’s current guidance.

Do not treat encoder overload, network capacity, keyframe cadence, or loop-boundary timestamps as a confirmed explanation unless the local output, logs, or YouTube health information supports it.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep prerecorded video live on YouTube without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required; the monthly plan is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for prerecorded video on YouTube, not camera streaming. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
