Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsLoop the videos inside your encoder and keep that encoder connected to the same YouTube live event. In OBS, enable Loop for a single Media Source file, or Loop Playlist for a multi-file VLC Video source. This keeps the media cycling without restarting the stream, but it does not guarantee that YouTube will save one uninterrupted archive. If the archive matters, plan to end the stream before 12 hours and make a local recording as a backup.
Why a playlist loop can coincide with a split archive
The loop setting controls media playback in the encoder; YouTube’s archive is a separate recording process. Letting a playlist return to its first video does not, by itself, end the live event. Conversely, a loop setting cannot guarantee that YouTube will create one archive file.
YouTube’s current help guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived. It also warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” That is a warning about possible failure to capture a long stream, not a promise that YouTube will divide it into usable archive parts. If a single YouTube archive is important, keep the session below 12 hours; treat that as guidance, not a guarantee. YouTube’s archive guidance also recommends keeping a local backup.
Set up the loop without restarting the live event
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream, then connect OBS using that event’s YouTube stream URL and stream key. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guidance if you need help finding the connection details.
- Choose the right OBS source. For one video, add a Media Source and enable Loop. For several videos, add a VLC Video source, select the files in the playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. OBS documents both controls in its Media Sources guide.
- Verify the cycle before going live. Confirm the video or playlist plays through and returns to the beginning as intended. This checks the encoder’s playback behavior; it does not test or guarantee YouTube’s archive.
- Start the encoder feed and check the event. Confirm the live preview or event is receiving the feed. Keep the encoder session running through playlist transitions. Do not manually end and restart the YouTube event simply to restart the content loop.
- Stay within the archive-duration guidance. If you need YouTube’s automatic archive, plan to stop the stream before it reaches 12 hours. YouTube says a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all.
- Record locally as a backup. Start a local recording and check that its file exists, opens, and continues to grow in size during the stream. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend a local archive and checking it.
- End in order. After the live event has stopped on YouTube, stop the encoder. YouTube explains how to end an encoder stream in its encoder setup guidance.
Choose a loop and backup workflow
| Workflow | Use it when | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Media Source with Loop | You are repeating one video file. | Confirm the file restarts at the end without interrupting the encoder feed. |
| OBS VLC Video with Loop Playlist | You are cycling through multiple files. | Confirm the playlist reaches its end and returns to the first item while the same live event stays connected. |
| Local recording alongside the live feed | You need a copy independent of YouTube’s archive. | Check available storage, file growth during the session, and that the resulting recording opens and plays. |
A local recording needs enough storage for the session. The space required depends on the recording’s bitrate, resolution, and duration, so choose storage based on those settings rather than assuming one drive size fits every stream. An external SSD is an optional place to store a backup; it does not change YouTube’s archive behavior or guarantee file integrity.

What to check if the archive is split or missing
- Look for an encoder or event interruption. Check whether OBS stopped, disconnected, or was restarted, and whether the YouTube event was ended and started again. Preserve the local recording before troubleshooting. The available guidance does not establish one guaranteed cause of split archives or a setting that merges archive segments.
- Check the session length. If the stream exceeded 12 hours, YouTube says it may not be captured at all. Do not assume a longer stream will reliably appear as one archive or as several usable parts.
- Inspect the local backup. Confirm its size increased during streaming and test that the file is playable. Keep it even if the YouTube archive is available, until you have verified the copy you need.
- Do not use DVR as an archive fix. DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and continue during a live stream. YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Disabling it stops backward seeking during the live stream; it does not prevent archive splitting. Viewers can still watch the full recording after it becomes available. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a pre-recorded YouTube stream, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video or playlist from the cloud, so your home computer does not have to stay on. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. This does not change YouTube’s archive-duration guidance or guarantee an archive file.
- Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one flat price per slot.
- The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account.
- Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
