The best way to upload a 100 GB video library is to use the destination cloud provider’s own resumable or multipart transfer tool, keep your source files untouched until verification, and confirm whether the streaming platform needs the videos encoded or packaged after upload. A storage bucket is not automatically a playback-ready streaming service.

Choose the destination and transfer method first

Choose the storage location that your streaming platform or CDN can use as an origin. Consider region, access permissions, audience geography, residency needs, and ongoing storage and delivery charges before moving the files. Google Media CDN, for example, documents support for cloud storage, other cloud object stores, and publicly reachable HTTP origins: Google Media CDN origins.

For a one-time 100 GB library already on a computer with reliable internet, a provider’s CLI or managed transfer client is usually the simplest route. It can retry failed files or parts and preserve completed work better than relying on a single fragile upload request or routing all file data through an application server that is not designed for ingestion.

Why resumable or multipart transfer matters

Google recommends resumable uploads for large files because a network failure does not require restarting the upload from the beginning. Its gcloud storage cp and gcloud storage rsync commands use resumable uploads; after an interruption, rerun the same command to resume. Resumable sessions can remain active for up to one week. See Google Cloud resumable uploads.

  • Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

Amazon S3 multipart upload sends an object in separate parts, so a failed part can be retransmitted without repeating successful parts. AWS recommends considering multipart uploads for objects around 100 MB or larger. See AWS multipart upload.

For a directory with many files, Google recommends --no-clobber when resuming a multi-file upload so files already transferred are not uploaded again. Do not blindly change parallelism or chunk size: these settings can affect throughput, memory use, request counts, and what work must be repeated after a failure. Google outlines the trade-offs among resumable, XML API multipart, and parallel composite uploads in its object upload guidance.

Estimate how long 100 GB will take

Use your sustained upload speed, not the download figure in your internet plan. A real speed test provides an initial estimate; a short trial transfer of representative files is more useful because it also includes source-disk reads and the chosen client’s behavior.

Sustained upload speed Idealized time for 100 GB
20 Mbps About 11 hours 7 minutes
100 Mbps About 2 hours 13 minutes
1 Gbps About 13 minutes 20 seconds

These are arithmetic estimates using decimal units (100 GB is about 800 gigabits), before overhead—not provider benchmarks or measured transfer results. Actual time can be materially longer due to Wi-Fi, other household traffic, protocol overhead, disk speed, or changing network conditions. A 100 Mbps connection does not guarantee that the transfer will sustain 100 Mbps end to end.

Prepare, transfer, and verify the library

  1. Inventory the source. Record the file names, paths, and expected file count; preserve the original directory structure where it matters. Keep the local copy until the cloud ingest is verified.
  2. Confirm destination access. Check that the streaming platform or delivery setup can read from the chosen bucket or storage origin, and that its credentials and permissions are appropriate. Avoid making private source media publicly readable just to simplify transfer.
  3. Run a representative trial. Transfer a sample that includes typical file sizes and formats. Observe actual sustained throughput, retry behavior, and whether the source drive or network is the bottleneck.
  4. Transfer with the provider’s supported client. Use its resumable or multipart behavior. For a multi-file Google Cloud transfer, consider --no-clobber when resuming so completed files are not needlessly copied again. Save the command output and failed-file logs.
  5. Resume after interruption. Re-run the relevant command or managed transfer job according to the provider’s instructions. Google says its resumable sessions may stay active for up to one week; if a session has expired, follow the client’s reported recovery behavior rather than assuming the old session remains usable.
  6. Check completeness and integrity. Compare object counts and total bytes with the inventory, review errors, and validate checksums where supported. AWS can validate a provided full-object checksum for multipart uploads; do not assume a multipart ETag is an MD5 checksum. See AWS multipart upload.
  7. Open representative files from the cloud origin. Test the platform’s processing and playback path only after the transfer has completed. Remove the local source only when the intended ingest and any required playback processing are confirmed.

Does uploading make the videos ready to stream?

Not necessarily. A cloud bucket stores files; smooth adaptive video-on-demand (VOD) playback may require encoding and packaging into segments and manifests that the player can request at different bitrates. AWS’s typical VOD architecture uses S3 for storage, MediaConvert for file-based processing, and CloudFront for delivery: AWS Video on Demand on AWS. Google also describes VOD content being served from Cloud Storage origins through a CDN: Google Cloud media workloads.

When you may not need another processing step

If the videos are already encoded and packaged in a format accepted by the chosen streaming server or platform, confirm that before paying to process them again. If the goal is private archive storage or direct file downloads rather than adaptive playback, a full VOD pipeline may be unnecessary.

Questions to settle before building the playback pipeline

  • Which source formats, codecs, containers, and packaging formats does the platform or player accept?
  • Does it require multiple renditions, segments, or manifests for adaptive playback?
  • How will access be controlled, and where are the viewers located?
  • What viewing volume and retention period should the delivery and storage costs cover?

Plan for total cost, not just storage

Storage is only one possible cost. Depending on the route and architecture, budget for storage class and region, upload requests, managed transfer service use, transcoding or packaging, CDN delivery, and data egress. Google lists per-GB pricing for on-premises Storage Transfer Service transfers, so check current region-specific charges for the exact route before starting: Google Storage Transfer Service pricing. For a VOD pipeline, include processing and delivery rather than comparing storage prices alone; AWS describes the separate storage, processing, and distribution components in its VOD architecture.

When a managed service or physical transfer makes sense

A managed transfer service may be worthwhile for recurring large moves, transfers between storage systems, or a workflow needing centralized control. A shipped appliance or extra drive is not automatically necessary for a 100 GB library. Consider a physical route only if a measured internet transfer is impractical, the source is already on removable media that needs staging, or a provider offers a suitable service for your location and volume. Confirm availability, supported destination, lead time, and full cost directly before relying on it.

Troubleshoot common transfer problems

Symptom Likely cause What to do
The upload is much slower than the plan’s advertised speed Upload capacity differs from download speed; Wi-Fi, household traffic, source-disk reads, protocol overhead, or provider/client limits may constrain sustained throughput. Measure upload speed, test over a stable connection, pause competing traffic, and run a representative sample transfer. Check whether the client or source drive is the bottleneck before changing parallelism.
The connection drops partway through A fragile single-request upload or interrupted client session. Use the provider’s resumable or multipart client and follow its recovery instructions. Retry a failed multipart part rather than restarting the whole object; for a multi-file transfer, resume with the provider’s recommended options.
Some files are missing or duplicated An incomplete transfer, failed-file errors, or an unsafe retry strategy. Compare file inventory, object count, total bytes, and logs. Use --no-clobber for the applicable Google multi-file resume workflow, then retry failures and verify again.
The uploaded video does not play smoothly or adapt to connection speed The stored source may not be encoded or packaged in the format the playback stack expects. Check the platform’s input requirements and processing status. Determine whether it needs transcoding, segments, manifests, and CDN delivery; do not assume that successful storage upload completes those steps.
A checksum or ETag does not match an expected MD5 value A multipart ETag is not necessarily an MD5 checksum. Use the provider’s documented checksum validation method, such as a full-object checksum where supported, and compare matching checksum types.

For always-on YouTube playback, a file upload is a different job

If by “cloud streaming server” you mean keeping a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded recordings, that is not the same as uploading a 100 GB VOD library to object storage. StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer does not need to stay on. Each slot streams uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and the first day is free with no card. Learn more at StreamNeo.

For the separate task of keeping a YouTube live stream running, StreamNeo is the first option to try: it runs always on from the cloud, streams any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. Start by uploading your video, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. For a 100 GB library, first confirm that the material you want to loop fits the slot’s 10 GB storage per slot, pooled across active slots; this is not a bulk archive or VOD delivery pipeline.

Or let it run in the cloud

  1. Upload your recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud.
  • Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream continues with your computer off.
  • Uploads stream at their original quality, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card. One free day is available per account.

Monthly: $9.99 per month. The service is the same on every plan; only the billing length changes. UPI and cards are supported in India; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo plans, or start your free day.
