For a cautious starting point, set OBS to H.264, 720p at 30 fps, 3 Mbps video bitrate, then test it on the same connection you will use to stream. YouTube lists 3 Mbps as the minimum and 8 Mbps as the recommended H.264 bitrate for 720p30. These are encoder settings—not guarantees that a particular Indian broadband connection or route to YouTube can sustain them.

Choose a bitrate for your resolution and frame rate

YouTube’s encoder guidance sets bitrate by codec, resolution and frame rate. Its table is not India-specific, and the page does not show a publication year. Use the column matching the codec you configure.

Format Minimum video bitrate Recommended video bitrate
H.264, 720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
H.264, 720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
H.264, 1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
H.264, 1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
AV1 or H.265, 720p30 2 Mbps 6 Mbps
AV1 or H.265, 1080p30 4 Mbps 10 Mbps

These values are from YouTube’s encoder settings guidance. They describe video bitrate at ingestion, not the upload speed your ISP must provide. Leave capacity for audio and network variation rather than assigning the entire measured upload rate to video.

Measure the connection you will actually stream from

Do not use an advertised download speed as a substitute for upload capacity. YouTube recommends a speed test and choosing a quality level the connection can reliably sustain. A speed-test result is only a snapshot; it does not establish stability throughout a long stream or predict every part of the route to YouTube.

  1. Run an upload speed test from the computer and broadband connection that will run OBS. Test more than once if possible, including under the usual household or workplace network load.
  2. Choose the target codec, resolution and frame rate, then consult the matching YouTube bitrate row. If sustainable upload is uncertain, begin with a lower target. For example, 3 Mbps is the H.264 minimum for 720p30, not YouTube’s recommended quality target.
  3. Set video bitrate below the upload capacity you can sustain, leaving room for audio and ordinary variation. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting heuristic; it is not a stability guarantee for Indian broadband or any specific ISP.
  4. Run a representative test, including movement and audio similar to the loop, and check both OBS’s dropped-frame indicator and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages.
  5. If the test remains stable and you need more detail or smoother motion, raise the target cautiously and test again. If frames drop or the stream disconnects, reduce the bitrate and repeat the test.

Set the important OBS output options

For a compatibility-oriented standard SDR loop, use H.264 over RTMPS. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 and AV1, and recommends RTMPS because it encrypts delivery to Google’s servers.

  • Service/server: Select YouTube and use RTMPS when available in your OBS workflow.
  • Video encoder: H.264 is a straightforward baseline. Choose another supported codec only if your encoder and workflow are compatible.
  • Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
  • Video bitrate: Choose the YouTube table value for your codec, resolution and frame rate, bounded by your tested, sustainable upload capacity.
  • Keyframe interval: 2 seconds. YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says the interval must not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Audio: AAC is a compatible choice; YouTube’s advanced guidance lists 128 Kbps for stereo audio.

YouTube also lists advanced encoder recommendations including progressive scan, square pixels, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR and 8-bit SDR. The controls available depend on the OBS encoder and hardware; prioritize the output settings above and verify the resulting stream in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s encoder settings for its full guidance.

What changes when the video is a loop?

A loop does not have a separate YouTube bitrate table or a special India setting. Pick codec, resolution and frame rate first, then test whether the connection sustains the matching bitrate for the intended stream.

Slow or mostly static visuals may look acceptable at a lower bitrate than fast movement, but YouTube does not publish a loop-specific discount. Treat a lower setting as a quality compromise to test, not proof that it will remain stable. Long-running streams make preflight testing and ongoing monitoring especially important.

Troubleshoot dropped frames and disconnects

OBS reports network-related dropped frames

OBS identifies dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the selected bitrate. Lower the video bitrate first and test again. If a different YouTube server or route is available, try it as a separate change so you can tell whether it helped.

Wi-Fi is inconsistent

Test over Ethernet if practical. OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming and recommends a wired connection. Ethernet can avoid some local wireless problems, but it will not increase the upload service from your ISP or fix congestion upstream.

The stream still disconnects

Check one factor at a time. OBS lists VPNs, security software, network-optimization utilities, outdated network drivers, router or modem issues, and congestion along the network route as possible causes. If local checks do not resolve the problem, contact your ISP. OBS documents Windows-only network optimizations and TCP pacing as further troubleshooting options; neither is a guaranteed fix. See the OBS stream connection troubleshooting guide.

Dynamic bitrate changes image quality

OBS has a beta dynamic-bitrate option that can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. OBS cautions that this does not fix the underlying cause and can reduce image quality. Use it as a fallback, not a replacement for choosing a sustainable bitrate and troubleshooting the connection.
