To loop a video on YouTube Live, enable Loop on an OBS Media Source before you start streaming; for multiple files, use an OBS VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. YouTube receives the video feed from OBS—the loop setting repeats the media, but does not keep a broadcast running if the encoder stops. Keep your stream key private: YouTube treats it like a password, and you can reset it in Live Control Room if it may have been exposed.
Before you start: check YouTube Live eligibility
You need a verified YouTube channel with no live-stream restrictions in the past 90 days. YouTube’s general guidance also lists a minimum age of 16. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it in advance and check your current eligibility before scheduling a broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions and eligibility guidance and encoder setup instructions.
Choose how to repeat your video
| What you want to play | OBS source | Loop setting | Dependency |
|---|---|---|---|
| One local video file | Media Source | Loop | Built into OBS |
| A sequence of video files | VLC Video | Loop Playlist | VLC must be installed. If OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC. |
OBS documents these controls in its Media Sources guide. A loop restarts the local media when playback ends; it does not restart a stopped encoder or guarantee uninterrupted uptime.
Loop one video file in OBS
- Create or select a scene: In OBS, use the Scenes panel to choose a scene for the broadcast or create one.
- Add the video: In Sources, select + → Media Source. Name it if prompted, then select the local video file in the source properties.
- Enable looping: Turn on Loop in the Media Source properties. OBS leaves this option off by default. Confirm the video appears in the preview and plays as expected.
- Configure the YouTube destination: In YouTube Studio, open Go live to enter the Live Control Room. Create or select a stream and copy its stream URL and stream key from Stream settings. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube or the applicable YouTube service, and enter the stream details. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain where to get those values and enter them.
- Check the broadcast before starting: Confirm the right scene and media are selected, and review the stream’s title, visibility, and other details in Live Control Room. Start streaming in OBS. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room, then select Go live there.
Loop a playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires it; match the architecture, installing 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- In the selected scene’s Sources panel, select + → VLC Video.
- Add the media files to the playlist in the source properties and enable Loop Playlist.
- Check the preview and playlist order, then stream to YouTube using the encoder setup above.
Use Media Source when one file is enough; use VLC Video when you need multiple files to play in sequence. Neither requires a dedicated capture card or hardware encoder for this local-file workflow.

Keep the YouTube stream key private
YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address.” The key lets the encoder send a feed YouTube will accept, so treat it as a credential.
- Paste it only into OBS’s stream settings. Do not expose the key or its field in a screenshot, screen recording, public post, or live output.
- Limit channel administrative access to people you trust, as YouTube recommends in its streaming safety tips.
- If you think the key was exposed, open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room → Stream and reset it, then replace the old value in OBS. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a key; see Manage live stream settings.
- A custom key can be reused. Reusing stream settings also carries over the previous stream’s metadata, settings, and key, so review them before the next broadcast.
Set visibility separately from key security
YouTube supports Public, Private, and Unlisted live streams. Visibility controls who can find or watch the broadcast; keeping the key secret controls who can send a feed to the channel. Set visibility in the stream details in Live Control Room rather than relying on key secrecy to limit viewers. YouTube says the default is private for users aged 13–17 and public for adults aged 18 or older. Review the current options in YouTube’s live stream settings.

Plan for copyright and the recording
Broadcast only media you have rights to use
Before looping a file, make sure your channel is authorized to broadcast both its video and audio. A file being available locally does not establish permission to stream it. YouTube’s settings guidance specifically reminds creators to ensure they have rights to video and audio used in trailers; apply the same rights check to all material you broadcast. The rules for a particular file depend on its rights and license.
Do not rely on YouTube’s archive for a long loop
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving the full broadcast matters, keep a local recording as a backup. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.

RTMP is enough for this basic workflow
YouTube’s documentation describes HLS as higher latency than RTMP and sets protocol-specific requirements. HLS is optional, not a prerequisite for looping a file from OBS; use the basic encoder workflow unless you have a reason to configure another protocol. See YouTube’s HLS guidance.
Troubleshoot common loop and key problems
- The video stops after one play: Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. The setting is off by default.
- The playlist does not appear or play: Confirm VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Check that files were added to the VLC Video source playlist.
- YouTube is not receiving the feed: Check that OBS has the correct stream URL and key from the selected YouTube stream, and that streaming has been started in OBS. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the preview and select Go live in Live Control Room.
- The key may have been seen by someone else: Reset it in Live Control Room → Stream, then update OBS with the replacement. Only a channel owner or manager can reset it.
- The stream is not public: Review visibility in Live Control Room. A private or unlisted setting is separate from whether the key is secret.
- The broadcast ends but the archive is incomplete or missing: A stream over 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Keep a local recording if the full program needs preservation.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps uploaded videos playing without leaving OBS or a computer on at home, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
