Google Gemini Spark can work with files in Mac folders you connect, and it can use supported Connected Apps. That is not unrestricted access to every file on your Mac or to the web. Google announced Spark for its macOS app as a beta on June 30, 2026; its current help page now documents adding folders and running tasks. Access and availability depend on what you connect and whether Spark is available to your account.
Gemini on Mac and Gemini Spark are different
Google’s standard Gemini Mac app provides chat and productivity features, including drafting, coding help, image analysis, voice interaction, and the option to share a window for context. Gemini Spark adds multi-step tasks that can act on connected folders and Connected Apps. Installing the Mac app does not by itself mean Spark can see all your files.
Google’s June 30, 2026 announcement described Spark on Mac as a beta. The current Gemini Spark for Mac help page documents its file and remote-task features.
What Spark can access on your Mac
You choose folders using the Connected folders toolbar and grant the requested permission. Google states that “Gemini can only view files or directories that you specifically add to the Connected folders toolbar.” The access boundary is the folders you connect, not the whole Mac.

With permission, Spark can view and edit most folders in those connected locations. Google gives Downloads, Desktop, Documents, and Photos as examples. Files elsewhere on the Mac are outside this described access unless you connect the folder containing them.
What Spark can do with connected files
Google’s examples include analyzing, editing, renaming, and reorganizing files; editing a Google Doc and saving it to the desktop; and finding a file and emailing it to someone in your contacts. These actions vary in consequence: analyzing a file is different from changing it, deleting it, or sending it to another person.

Spark can permanently delete files and share files with third parties. Google says it is designed to ask before those actions, but that is not a substitute for checking what will be changed or shared. Review file contents and verify recipients before confirming.
Backups and safety limits
Google says Spark creates temporary backup files while working on computer files. You may be able to recover them before moving to another task; Google says the backups are deleted when a new query or task begins or after 24 hours. It also cautions that files may not be recoverable after a task or after an instruction to delete them. Treat these as temporary safeguards, not a guarantee that every change can be undone.

- Supervise tasks and schedules, especially where sensitive information or actions requiring oversight are involved. Google warns that Spark can make mistakes.
- Do not put sign-in information, payment details, or other sensitive information directly into a task thread.
- Take particular care before connecting a public cloud drive. Google warns that Spark may be able to access, edit, share, and delete files there; material shared to the drive may be visible to other people who can access it.
Connected Apps and the web: what that means
Connected Apps are services Spark can work with when the integrations are available and connected; they are not the same as unrestricted access to the web or to every app on your Mac. Google’s June 30 announcement named Google Tasks, Google Keep, Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable, and Zillow Rentals as new integrations. It said those integrations would first roll out on web and mobile, then reach macOS in the following weeks. That announcement does not establish that every integration is enabled for every Mac user today, so check the Connected Apps shown in your Gemini interface.
Tasks involving services can have consequences outside the Mac, such as sharing a file or sending an email. Check the requested action, content, and recipient before allowing it to proceed.

Use Spark remotely from another device
Google’s current Mac help page documents remote task control from another device signed into the same Gemini account. The Gemini Mac app must be running, and you must have accepted Spark’s terms. Google lists being on the same Wi-Fi network or having Bluetooth turned on and linked as connection requirements. Once connected, you can start tasks remotely, give voice or text prompts, and read past chats.
Google’s rolling release notes previously described remote task access from web or mobile as “Coming soon.” The current help page now documents setup; use it for the present requirements rather than relying on the older release-note wording.

Mac requirements and who can use Spark
Google’s Gemini app for Mac help page lists these requirements for the app:
- macOS Sequoia (15.0) or later
- An Apple silicon Mac
- At least 8 GB of RAM
- At least 200 MB of free disk space
- A stable internet connection
Google says the app supports a personal Google account, or a work or school account where an administrator has enabled Gemini. These are technical requirements for the app, not a recommendation to buy a new computer.
The June 30, 2026 announcement said Spark’s beta initially began in the US for Google AI Ultra subscribers aged 18 and over. The current help page says Spark is usable where available, but the reviewed Google pages do not set out a complete current country-and-plan eligibility list. Check your account and Gemini app for availability rather than assuming Spark is included for every user or region.
