For a 720p YouTube Live stream from OBS, start with H.264, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, progressive video, and YouTube’s recommended bitrate range of 3–8 Mbps. For a mostly static loop, 720p30 is a sensible starting point; choose 60 fps when the video has meaningful fast motion. Test your upload connection and the actual stream before relying on it for a long broadcast.

Recommended OBS settings for a 720p YouTube loop

YouTube’s live encoder settings list the following H.264 bitrate range for 720p, for both 30 and 60 fps. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection or stream will be stable.

Setting Starting value Notes
Resolution and frame rate 1280 × 720 at 30 fps For a static or slowly changing loop. Use 60 fps if the video has meaningful fast movement.
Video codec H.264 A straightforward baseline. YouTube also lists AV1 and H.265, with different bitrate recommendations.
Rate control CBR YouTube recommends constant bitrate for live encoder setup.
Video bitrate 3–8 Mbps YouTube’s recommended H.264 range for 720p30 and 720p60. Select a rate your tested connection can sustain.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
Video scan Progressive Use progressive scan rather than interlaced output.
Audio AAC or MP3 Both are listed by YouTube for live encoder audio.
Protocol RTMPS preferred YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery.

These recommendations come from YouTube’s live encoder settings, accessed in 2026. For 720p30 and 720p60, YouTube also lists 2–6 Mbps for AV1 and H.265; codec options can depend on the encoder and workflow you use.

Choose 720p30 or 720p60

Use 720p30 for a mostly still image

For a slideshow, devotional artwork, a slowly moving background, or a loop with little visible motion, 30 fps is a reasonable starting configuration. This is a practical choice, not a YouTube rule. It avoids sending extra frames that may not add visible value for a static scene.

Use 720p60 when motion matters

Choose 60 fps if the source contains fast movement that benefits from smoother motion. YouTube’s H.264 bitrate recommendation remains 3–8 Mbps at either frame rate, but a higher frame rate is not automatically better: the source and upload connection still need to support it.

Set up OBS and connect it to YouTube

  1. Enable live streaming early. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and complete any required live-stream setup. YouTube says first-time live streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until broadcast time. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  2. Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio. Use the Live Control Room workflow to create the broadcast and obtain its stream key. YouTube’s stream management guidance explains managing stream settings and keys, as well as latency and DVR options.
  3. Keep the stream key private. Enter it in OBS through the stream configuration. Do not publish or share the key; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
  4. Configure OBS’s output and video settings. Select YouTube or the appropriate RTMPS server workflow, enter the stream key, and set the output to CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and a bitrate within 3–8 Mbps for 720p H.264. Set the canvas/output resolution to 1280 × 720, choose 30 or 60 fps based on motion, and use progressive scan with AAC or MP3 audio. OBS labels can differ across versions, so match the setting names rather than relying on a particular menu layout.
  5. Test before the planned broadcast. Send a test stream with audio and movement similar to the intended loop. Check both the picture and sound, then review YouTube’s stream health and messages before treating the setup as ready.
  6. Go live and monitor health. Start streaming from OBS and confirm the incoming feed in the Live Control Room. Keep an eye on stream health and any warnings while the broadcast is active.

Plan upload bandwidth for a stable stream

The selected video bitrate is only one part of the upload load. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% bandwidth headroom and testing outbound capacity; its Streaming tips page puts it as “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” A nominal internet plan speed does not establish how much upload bandwidth is consistently available at the computer running OBS, especially when other people or devices share the connection.

  • Run a speed test from the same connection you will use for the stream, then test OBS sending the actual video.
  • Choose a bitrate the connection can sustain with headroom rather than setting it at the highest number in YouTube’s range by default.
  • If other household or workplace users are uploading, account for that competing traffic; their use can reduce the capacity available to OBS.
  • If Wi-Fi proves unreliable, trying a wired Ethernet connection is a troubleshooting option, not a requirement or a guaranteed fix.

YouTube’s encoder settings guidance also recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event.

Latency, loop eligibility, and policy are separate questions

Encoder settings can help deliver a video feed, but they do not establish whether a particular channel in India is eligible to stream or whether a specific continuous-loop format complies with YouTube’s current policies. Check your channel’s status and YouTube’s current rules before scheduling a long-running loop. Also make sure you have the rights to the video and audio you broadcast; technical settings do not grant permission to use copyrighted material.

Choose latency based on whether you need real-time audience interaction. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering, and lower latency matters less when the creator is not interacting with viewers. Review the latency and DVR choices in the stream management guidance instead of assuming the lowest setting is best for a continuous prerecorded loop.

Troubleshoot a 720p OBS loop

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
OBS or YouTube reports an unstable stream Upload capacity, competing traffic, or bitrate too high for the connection Test outbound bandwidth, leave about 20% headroom, reduce the bitrate within the recommended range if needed, and run another test stream.
Video appears choppy Frame rate may not suit the source or connection For a mostly static loop, try 720p30. Use 60 fps when motion warrants it and verify that the upload can sustain the selected settings.
YouTube does not receive the OBS feed Stream key, service/server choice, or channel live enablement Verify the key in the Live Control Room, confirm the OBS service/server configuration, and allow for the possibility that first-time enablement takes up to 24 hours.
Picture arrives but audio is missing or wrong OBS audio source, mute state, or encoder audio configuration Check that the intended audio source is active and not muted, choose AAC or MP3, and include audio in the next test with representative content.
Connection problems continue on Wi-Fi Wireless reliability or congestion Test again when the network is less busy; if practical, try Ethernet as a diagnostic option. A cable is not a guaranteed remedy.
