Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck two things: OBS’s configured audio settings and the audio stream in a representative recording. The first tells you what OBS is set to use; the second verifies what the encoded file actually contains. They can differ if OBS processes or downmixes a source.
1. Check OBS’s configured audio settings
- Open OBS Studio and select Settings > Audio.
- Note the displayed Sample Rate and Channels. These are OBS configuration values, not proof of the properties in an existing or future encoded file.
OBS versions can differ in labels or behavior. The current OBS interface documentation identifies Sample Rate and Channels controls; check the settings available in your installed version.
2. Inspect the audio stream in a video file
Use FFprobe, included with FFmpeg, to inspect an existing video or a short test recording. In a terminal, run:
ffprobe -v error -select_streams a:0 -show_entries stream=codec_name,sample_rate,channels,channel_layout -of default=noprint_wrappers=1 input.mp4

Replace input.mp4 with the file’s path. The command selects the first audio stream and asks FFprobe to report its codec, sample rate, channel count, and channel layout when available. If the file has multiple audio streams, inspect each one rather than assuming the first is the track you intend to use. To list streams and identify them, run:
ffprobe -v error -show_streams -of default=noprint_wrappers=1 input.mp4

Look for the audio stream entries and compare sample_rate, channels, and channel_layout. A sample rate is expressed in hertz. Channel count says how many channels the stream has; layout describes their roles or arrangement, such as mono or stereo. Layout may not be reported for every file or by every FFprobe version.
3. Compare the intended, configured, and encoded audio
For a useful check, record these values for the same audio stream at each stage you can inspect:

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
- Sample rate: the source or delivery requirement, OBS’s configured value, and the file’s reported value.
- Channel count: how many channels the source and output contain.
- Channel layout: whether the roles, such as mono or stereo, match the intended output.
- Processing: whether OBS remixed, resampled, or downmixed the source.
Do not infer audio properties from video resolution, frame rate, a source label, or an OBS meter. Inspect the output file made with the settings you plan to use. If you change a setting, make another representative recording and inspect that file too.
Why the file may not match OBS or the source
OBS can remix or resample
OBS documents automatic remixing or resampling when a source’s sample rate or channel count differs from the backend configuration. Consequently, the source’s original properties need not be the same as the stream recorded by OBS. OBS Studio’s documented backend behavior is versioned; details may vary with the installed version.

Mono sources can appear as two-channel output
OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide says the mixer defaults to stereo and describes a Downmix to Mono option that forces one-channel source audio to two channels. A two-channel result therefore does not, by itself, prove that the original source was stereo. Compare the source and output, including the mixer’s processing, to understand the change.
Hardware may limit device settings
Available sample rates and channel counts can depend on the audio device. FFmpeg’s device options include sample rate and channel count, but a device may reject an unsupported requested option. A configured or requested value is not evidence that the device or final file used it; verify the recording.

Troubleshoot mismatches
| What you see | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The recording’s sample rate differs from OBS’s setting. | Confirm you inspected the intended audio stream and the latest test file. Check whether OBS or the source is applying audio processing. | Make a new short recording after confirming the intended settings, then inspect its audio stream with FFprobe. |
| The file has two channels, but the source was mono. | Check OBS’s mixer behavior and whether Downmix to Mono is enabled for the source. | Compare source and output channel count and layout; verify the resulting file rather than relying on the source presentation. |
| The channel layout is missing or unexpected. | Check the reported channel count and ensure the selected stream is the one you meant to inspect. Layout reporting can vary by file and FFprobe version. | Use the same FFprobe version and inspection method when comparing files; treat an absent layout field as unreported, not as proof of a particular layout. |
| An audio device rejects a requested rate or channel count. | The device may not support that option. | Use a supported device setting, then record and inspect a new file. Do not assume the requested option took effect. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Does matching OBS’s Sample Rate setting guarantee the recording has that rate?
No. Inspect the audio stream in the resulting file to verify its reported sample rate.
Does channel count tell me the channel layout?
No. Count is the number of channels; layout identifies their roles or arrangement, when reported.
