Yes. A video that was “cleared” before can still trigger a live interruption, and if YouTube removes the active livestream for copyright, the channel gets a copyright strike. A past claim release or permission should not be assumed to cover a new live rebroadcast: confirm that the rights cover this channel and use, and ask the rights owner to add the channel to their Content ID allowlist.
Why a previously cleared video can still cause trouble
“Previously cleared” is not a precise YouTube policy status. It might mean a Content ID claim was released, a rights owner gave permission, a license was granted, or an earlier platform decision did not remove an upload. Those outcomes are not interchangeable, and none should be treated as automatic authorization for every later use.
YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material in another live broadcast. When its systems identify material, YouTube may show a placeholder and warn the creator to stop; if the material remains, it may interrupt or terminate the stream. YouTube also warns that a licensed stream can be interrupted if the channel has not been added to the rights owner’s Content ID allowlist. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance describes both the scan and the allowlist issue.
So there are two separate questions: do you have the necessary rights for this particular live use, and has the owner authorized the channel through Content ID where needed? A past clearance may answer neither.

What kind of “clearance” do you have?
| What happened before | What it establishes | What to check before rebroadcasting |
|---|---|---|
| A Content ID claim was released | The prior claim on that use was released. A claim typically is not itself a copyright strike. | Do not treat the release alone as a grant of rights for a new live use. Confirm permission or a license for the new use and channel. |
| You have written permission or a license | It may grant rights, subject to its terms. A license alone may not prevent an automated interruption. | Check whether it covers livestreaming and repeat broadcasts, the specific channel, territories, dates, and all included third-party material. Ask the owner to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. |
| An earlier upload stayed up or received no claim | That earlier platform outcome is not a general finding that every future use is authorized. | Establish the rights for this live use rather than relying on silence or the prior upload’s status. |
The license checks above are practical questions, not a universal license form prescribed by YouTube. The exact scope depends on the agreement and the material involved. Music, clips, or other third-party elements embedded in a video may have separate rights.
Match, claim, removal request, and strike are different
| Event | What it means | Likely consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Live-stream match or warning | YouTube identifies third-party material during the live scan. | The stream can be replaced with a placeholder, interrupted, or terminated if the material remains. A match or warning is not by itself the same thing as a strike. |
| Content ID claim on an archived stream | YouTube says claims on an archived livestream are made after the stream ends. | A claim typically does not itself result in a copyright strike. It is separate from what can happen while the stream is live. |
| Copyright removal request | A rights holder submits a legal request to remove content. YouTube says it removes the content and applies a strike if the request appears valid. | The content is removed and the channel receives a strike. |
| Active livestream removed for copyright | YouTube’s live-stream strike guidance treats removal of an active livestream for copyright as a strike. | The channel’s livestream access is restricted for seven days after the first such strike; another copyright strike makes the livestream restriction 14 days. |
See YouTube’s explanation of copyright strikes and its page on copyright removal requests for the distinction between a claim and a legal takedown.

Check rights and authorization before you go live
- Identify what was cleared. Find out whether the previous outcome was a released Content ID claim, direct permission or license, a counter-notification outcome, or something else. A released claim is not, by itself, proof that future contexts are covered.
- Read the permission or license against this exact use. Verify that it covers live streaming and repeat broadcasts, the intended YouTube channel, relevant territories and dates, and the music and other third-party elements in the video.
- Request Content ID allowlisting. If you licensed third-party content, YouTube says to ask the owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Do this before the broadcast and confirm that the correct channel is included.
- Keep the written record. Keep the license or permission and the rights owner’s confirmation of allowlisting available in case a stream is interrupted or a claim arises.
YouTube says creators should have the necessary rights before disputing a claim. Owning a copy of a video or song is not a valid reason, by itself, to dispute a claim. Its claim-dispute guidance also notes that YouTube cannot decide whether a creator should dispute; if you are unsure about your legal position, consider getting legal advice.
If YouTube interrupts the stream or issues a strike
- Check YouTube Studio. Review the dashboard and the stream’s notices for the stated restriction, claim, removal, or strike information. YouTube directs creators to Studio to check strike status.
- Determine whether it was a live match or a takedown. A warning or interruption is not automatically a strike. Check whether YouTube removed the active stream and whether Studio shows a copyright strike.
- Resolve a strike through an available route. YouTube lists completing Copyright School and waiting 90 days, getting a retraction from the claimant, or submitting a valid counter notification as ways a strike may be resolved. A counter notification is a legal process; use it only if you believe the removal was a mistake or your use qualifies for a copyright exception.
- Fix the rights or allowlist issue before restarting. Do not simply repeat the same material while the underlying rights or channel authorization remains unresolved.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud; it does not provide copyright clearance. You still need the necessary rights and, for licensed third-party material, should ask the owner to allowlist your channel before streaming.
