Set the browser’s CSS viewport width and height before navigating to the page, then take a normal viewport screenshot. In Playwright, use page.setViewportSize({ width, height }); for a repeatable context-wide setup, pass viewport to browser.newContext(). Keep viewport dimensions separate from device emulation and screenshot output scale: they control different parts of the result.
Capture a page at an exact width and height with Playwright
Playwright’s viewport dimensions are measured in CSS pixels. Set them before navigation, especially when you want a mobile layout: many websites do not expect phone-sized dimensions to change after a page has loaded.
One page
Install Playwright and its browser binaries for your project using the official installation instructions, then save this as a JavaScript file and run it with Node.js. Replace the URL and dimensions with your target values.

Share dimensions across pages
Configure a browser context when several pages or tests should use the same viewport:

The Playwright documentation notes that this method resizes the page and resets screen size. If you need finer independent control of screen and viewport dimensions, configure both on the browser context.

Viewport size is not the same as a full-page screenshot
A viewport screenshot shows the visible browser page area. A full-page screenshot extends to include the full scrollable page, so the resulting image is taller and does not represent only the specified visible viewport. In Playwright, use the default screenshot behavior for the viewport; use fullPage: true when you want content below the fold included.

Understand CSS pixels, device emulation and output scale
Viewport width and height determine the page’s CSS layout area. Device emulation adds device-like properties such as a user agent, touch behavior and device scale factor. Screenshot output scale controls the pixel dimensions of the saved image. Changing one does not automatically set the others to your desired values.
For a straightforward exact-size capture, set the viewport dimensions and leave screenshot scale at its default. If you need to reproduce a particular phone or tablet, use a device profile or set its relevant properties as well. When using a Playwright device preset with custom dimensions, spread the preset first and specify your viewport afterward so your explicit dimensions override its preset viewport.

Playwright’s screenshot tooling documents a scale option for choosing CSS-pixel or device-pixel output. Select the output scale based on whether your consumer expects CSS-sized output or device-pixel output; do not treat it as a substitute for setting the viewport.
Common problems and fixes
- The page uses a desktop layout at a phone-sized screenshot. Set the viewport before navigation. Many sites do not expect phone dimensions to be applied after load.
- The output dimensions are not the dimensions you expected. Confirm that you set both viewport width and height, and check whether you enabled full-page capture or changed screenshot scale.
- A device preset overrides your custom size. Apply the preset first and then set your custom
viewportso it takes precedence. - The screenshot is blank or navigation fails. Check the destination URL and whether the page loaded successfully before capturing. The cited Playwright examples do not prescribe a universal navigation wait condition, so select a wait strategy that suits the site rather than assuming a fixed delay works everywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a viewport width without specifying a height?
For a defined viewport capture, set both width and height explicitly; the visible page area has both dimensions.
Does a 390-pixel viewport guarantee that a site will look like a specific phone?
No. The viewport sets CSS layout dimensions. Device-like behavior may also depend on emulation properties such as user agent, touch behavior and device scale factor.
