Yes—but YouTube Live does not directly play an uploaded file as a broadcast. To stream a prerecorded 10-bit or HDR video continuously, a live encoder must play or loop the file and send a compatible live signal to YouTube. For HDR, YouTube’s documented live workflow requires HEVC/H.265 with 10-bit HDR color characteristics; a file being 10-bit on its own is not enough.
What YouTube Live supports for HDR
YouTube Help says HDR streaming is supported and that live HDR ingestion currently requires H.265 (HEVC). YouTube documents both RTMP(S) and HLS for HDR. The signal must also carry compatible HDR color information: BT.2020 color primaries and either ST 2084 PQ or HLG transfer characteristics, matching the source. YouTube’s HDR streaming guidance describes these requirements.
That means a 10-bit file is not automatically a valid HDR live stream. Confirm that the source is genuinely HDR and whether it uses PQ or HLG, then configure the encoder to preserve the matching transfer characteristics and color metadata while producing HEVC 10-bit output.
How to stream a prerecorded HDR file continuously
- Check the source. Confirm that it is HDR and identify whether its transfer characteristics are PQ or HLG. Keep the source’s color metadata intact.
- Choose a playback and live-encoding workflow. Use software or hardware that can take the file as a source, loop it, and encode a YouTube-compatible HDR live signal. Looping controls vary by product; YouTube’s general support pages do not provide a universal file-loop recipe.
- Configure HDR encoding. YouTube’s OBS instructions call for a hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10 profile, P010 (4:2:0) color format, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG. Options and labels depend on the device and software. YouTube recommends HLG in those instructions, but the selected transfer characteristics still need to match the source. Check YouTube’s HDR encoder guidance.
- Set the ingestion protocol and stream key. YouTube documents RTMP(S) and HLS for HDR. Select the matching protocol in the encoder and use the appropriate YouTube stream key; for HLS, YouTube specifies an HLS stream key. Do not assume an ordinary file-upload setting is a live-ingestion setting.
- Check the output and confirm the loop. Start the live stream, verify the encoder is sending HDR-compatible HEVC output, and confirm the file repeats as intended. The Live Control Room preview does not display HDR colors, so it cannot by itself confirm how HDR appears to viewers.
RTMP(S) or HLS?

General live settings still matter
HDR requirements do not replace YouTube’s general live-encoder guidance. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds; it also recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Choose the bitrate using the row for your actual output resolution and frame rate in YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions table. There is no single bitrate that applies to every stream.

YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers. The encoder’s input requirements and the qualities viewers can select are therefore separate considerations.
What viewers will see
HDR appears automatically on supported playback devices. YouTube lists HDR TVs using the YouTube app, Chromecast Ultra connected to an HDR TV, Android devices with HDR displays, and computers with HDR-capable graphics and displays when HDR is enabled on Windows or Mac. Other devices receive SDR. On a compatible device, viewers can look for an HDR indicator in the video quality menu; the Live Control Room preview does not show HDR colors. YouTube lists compatible playback cases in its HDR guidance.

Live HDR ingestion is not the same as uploading an HDR file
YouTube’s upload guidance lists MOV, MP4, and MKV as tested containers and recommends upload codecs including VP9 Profile 2, AV1, and HEVC. It also requires correct transfer function, color primaries, and matrix metadata for uploaded HDR video. Those upload specifications do not mean every upload codec is accepted for HDR live ingestion: use the live-specific HEVC/H.265, 10-bit, color-signal, and protocol requirements instead. Common problems and fixes
- The file is 10-bit, but the stream is not recognized as HDR. Bit depth alone does not establish HDR. Verify BT.2020 primaries and the correct PQ or HLG transfer characteristics are present and preserved through encoding.
- The encoder does not offer the required HDR settings. Confirm it supports hardware HEVC encoding, Main 10, and P010 output. Exact options depend on the device and software.
- The stream has more latency than expected. HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it delivers segments. If low latency is important, check whether the encoder supports YouTube’s HDR configuration over RTMP(S).
- The preview looks like SDR. The Live Control Room preview does not show HDR colors. Check playback on a supported HDR device and look for the HDR indicator in its video quality menu.
- The file plays once and stops. File looping is controlled by the playback/encoder workflow, not by a universal YouTube setting. Check that product’s loop behavior and confirm it continues sending the encoded stream.
