You usually do not need to convert a MOV file just to use it in OBS: OBS lists MOV as a supported Media Source format. If you need a VLC playlist or your MOV’s codecs do not play reliably in your setup, a practical compatibility target is an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. First try stream copy when the existing codecs fit; otherwise, use the transcode command below as a starting point and test the result in your actual OBS playlist.

Decide whether the MOV needs conversion

A .mov filename identifies a container, not the codecs inside it. MOV files may contain H.264, HEVC, ProRes, or other video, as well as different audio formats. The extension alone cannot tell you whether the file will work in a given OBS playback setup.

OBS documents MOV among the file types supported by Media Source. Its VLC Video source is the playlist option and requires VLC to be installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies 64-bit VLC. Playback can still depend on the codecs in the file and the installed playback stack. See the OBS guides for Media Sources and Audio/Video Formats.

  • Using a single Media Source: Try the MOV directly. Convert only if it fails to play as intended or you have another concrete compatibility requirement.
  • Building a VLC Video playlist: Test the MOV in that source first. A playlist does not itself require that every item be MP4.
  • Need a compatibility-oriented transcode: Use H.264 video and AAC audio in MP4 as a reasonable starting target, not a guarantee for every OBS version, operating system, or file.

Inspect the streams before choosing FFmpeg settings

Check the input’s video codec, dimensions, frame rate, pixel format, audio codec, number of audio streams, and any subtitles or other tracks you need. Choose stream copy only if the streams are compatible with the output container and the OBS/VLC playback environment. If not, transcode the incompatible stream or streams.

For FFmpeg’s mapping and encoding options, consult the FFmpeg documentation. Use explicit mapping when you need to control which video, audio, or other streams are included; otherwise, a file with multiple tracks can produce an output different from the one you intended.

Try stream copy when the existing codecs fit

Stream copy remuxes selected streams without re-encoding them. It avoids another lossy encode, but changing the filename or container does not convert a codec or make an incompatible stream compatible.

ffmpeg -i input.mov -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c copy output.mp4

This selects the first video stream and the first audio stream if one exists. The question mark makes the audio mapping optional, so the command can work when the input has no audio. If the copy fails, or the resulting MP4 still does not play in the intended source, check the stream/container compatibility and use a transcode where needed.

Transcode to H.264 video and AAC audio

When stream copy is unsuitable, this command is a practical starting example for a compatibility-focused MP4:

ffmpeg -i input.mov -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.mp4

It encodes the first video stream with libx264 and the first audio stream, if present, as AAC. The values medium, 20, and 192k are example starting settings, not universal optimum values or settings tested by OBS for every MOV. FFmpeg’s codec documentation describes libx264’s CRF and preset controls.

  • CRF: A lower CRF generally targets higher quality and a larger file; a higher value generally reduces file size at the cost of quality. Encode a short representative section and inspect it before converting a long playlist.
  • Preset: A faster preset reduces encoding time; a slower preset can improve compression efficiency but takes longer. Your source and machine affect the practical trade-off.
  • Audio bitrate: 192k is an example for the AAC output, not a requirement for OBS. Adjust it to your audio needs, or copy compatible audio if preserving its existing encoding is more important.

Keep the source resolution and frame rate by default. Change them only when you have a specific output target, need a consistent playlist cadence, or have a playback-performance reason. There is no single best resolution, frame rate, or CRF for every source.

Keep the tracks you actually need

The sample commands select only the first video and, optionally, the first audio stream. If a MOV contains multiple audio tracks, subtitles, or other streams, decide which ones the playlist should use and map them deliberately rather than assuming the first track is the right one. OBS’s VLC Video source includes audio-track and subtitle controls, but the available behavior depends on the media and playback setup.

When only one stream needs conversion, FFmpeg can copy a compatible stream while encoding another; select and map the streams intentionally, then confirm the output in OBS. Do not assume that every stream in a MOV can be copied into MP4 unchanged.

Add and test the video in the OBS playlist

  1. Install VLC if needed: The VLC Video source depends on VLC libraries. Match VLC’s bitness to OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  2. Add the source: In OBS, add a VLC Video source and add the converted or original files to its playlist. Use Media Source instead when you need a single media file rather than a playlist.
  3. Set playlist behavior: OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default and Shuffle Playlist as off by default. Choose whether to loop or shuffle for your use case; visibility behavior and caching options affect operation, not the video’s encoding quality.
  4. Preview the whole path: Play the file in the same OBS source you will use, check picture and sound, and confirm the transition to the next playlist item. A file that opens elsewhere may still behave differently through the OBS/VLC playback stack.

Troubleshoot common playback and conversion problems

  • The MOV is absent or unavailable as a playlist source: Confirm you added VLC Video rather than expecting Media Source to provide a playlist, and check that VLC is installed with the correct bitness.
  • The file is listed but will not play: Inspect its codecs and tracks. Try direct playback in the intended OBS source; if needed, transcode to H.264/AAC MP4 and test again.
  • FFmpeg reports an error during stream copy: The selected streams may not fit the MP4 container or playback target. Transcode incompatible streams instead of treating -c copy as a conversion.
  • The output has no sound: Check whether the input contains an audio stream and whether the mapping selected it. The optional mapping in the examples deliberately allows video-only files.
  • The wrong language or audio plays: The command selects the first audio stream only. Map the intended audio stream explicitly and verify the track selection in VLC Video.
  • Subtitles or extra tracks are missing: The sample commands do not map them. Include the required streams explicitly and check OBS’s subtitle/audio-track controls.
  • The converted file is too large or takes too long to encode: Test a higher CRF for a smaller output or a faster preset for shorter encoding time; review a sample for acceptable quality before batch conversion.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep pre-recorded videos live on a YouTube channel around the clock, StreamNeo is a different option from an OBS playlist: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. The same slot supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.

StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
