First check whether the playlist is in an OBS VLC Video source or whether you are using separate Media Source sources; then test the affected file outside OBS and compare it with one that works. The available OBS documentation and issue reports concern media playlists played inside OBS. They do not establish that OBS is reading a YouTube playlist directly, or that the files came from YouTube.
First, identify what “YouTube playlist” means here
OBS’s playlist controls apply to media sources inside OBS. If you mean a YouTube playlist viewed on YouTube, the cited OBS sources do not establish a direct connection that would make OBS read that playlist. If you have downloaded or otherwise obtained video files and added them to OBS, diagnose those local or network-hosted media entries as an OBS source playlist instead.
OBS offers a built-in Media Source and a VLC Video source. VLC Video uses VLC libraries and supports playlists. Find the source name in the OBS Sources list and note whether one source contains multiple entries or whether the scene has several individual Media Sources. That distinction determines which settings and dependencies to check. OBS media source documentation.
Check VLC installation and architecture
If you are using VLC Video, confirm that VLC is installed. OBS says this source requires VLC libraries and that 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC. A mismatch or missing dependency is a setup issue to rule out before treating the behavior as a playlist-file bug. OBS media source documentation.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
- Confirm the source is actually named VLC Video.
- Check that the installed VLC architecture matches OBS: 64-bit with 64-bit OBS.
- Record your operating system and OBS and VLC versions, since behavior reported for a specific older version or platform may not apply to your installation.
Test the file, not just its extension
Play the problem entry in a media player, then try a known-good file in the same OBS source. If the problem follows one file, check that it opens and plays to the end outside OBS and that it is not truncated or malformed. If it follows a group of files, note their container, audio/video codecs, and whether they are network URLs rather than local files.
An extension on OBS’s supported-file list is not proof that every file with that extension is valid or compatible with your particular source and installed libraries. Container and codec combinations matter; consult OBS’s format guidance. An OBS issue report used an invalid MP4 as a VLC-source crash reproduction, showing that an invalid entry can matter in a reported case—not that every skip or freeze is caused by an invalid MP4. OBS issue #8974.

Review VLC playlist and visibility settings
In the VLC Video source properties, inspect the playlist and the available playback controls. OBS documents loop and shuffle options, behavior when the source is hidden, and a network caching setting. The hidden-source options include stop and restart, pause and resume, or always play. These controls are useful checks when the symptom occurs at a playlist boundary or after changing scenes, but the documentation does not identify one setting as a universal fix. OBS media source documentation.
- If playback fails only after a scene change or while the source is hidden, note the selected hidden-source behavior and reproduce the problem with the source visible.
- If shuffle or looping is on, test with it off so you can identify the exact entry and playback order involved.
- If only network-hosted entries stall, compare them with local files. Network caching is exposed as a setting, but OBS does not prescribe increasing it as a general repair—especially for local-file stalls.
Use the symptom to narrow the diagnosis
Audio or video cuts near an MP3 boundary
A report filed against OBS 29.1.3 on Windows 10 described MP3 playlist items losing about a second at the beginning and end. Treat that as a version- and symptom-specific report, not proof of a current problem affecting all MP3 playlists. If your symptom matches, record the OBS version, operating system, affected files, and whether the cut occurs at each item boundary. OBS issue #8971.

The picture freezes while audio continues
An older OBS issue about mixed audio and video files in VLC Video described a frozen video frame while audio continued. Check whether sound continues during your freeze and whether the playlist mixes audio-only and video entries. The report concerned older OBS versions, so it is a clue for reproducing the symptom, not confirmation that your current installation has the same bug. OBS issue #5594.
Only local monitoring sounds delayed or choppy
A macOS 12 report involving OBS 28.0.3 described delayed VLC controls and audio monitoring. A project member said the recording captured skips correctly while monitored audio was buffered; the issue was closed in July 2023. Compare the actual recording or stream with what you hear in monitoring before concluding that the playlist output itself is skipping. This historical report does not establish that current macOS builds have the same issue. OBS issue #7820.

Collect enough information to get a specific answer
If the checks above do not isolate the cause, make the problem reproducible and include the details that distinguish file, source, and monitoring failures. An OBS log from a session where the issue occurs is more useful than a description alone. OBS’s guide explains how to find and share logs: OBS log files.
- Source type: VLC Video or Media Source; one playlist source or several sources.
- Operating system and OBS/VLC versions; for VLC Video, whether their architectures match.
- The affected files’ extensions and, if known, container and codecs; whether they are local or network-hosted.
- Whether the same file plays completely outside OBS and whether a known-good file works in the same source.
- What happens during the freeze: does audio continue, and does the same interruption appear in the recording or stream, or only in preview/monitoring?
- Whether the failure follows a scene change, hidden source, playlist boundary, or loop.
Consider another playlist source only if VLC Video is the failure point
The OBS forum lists a third-party Media Playlist Source plugin that uses Media Source internally, describes support for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and gives OBS 30.0.0 as its minimum version. It may be worth investigating if you have isolated the failure to VLC Video, but its listing does not establish that it fixes skips or freezes. Check its current maintenance and compatibility with your OBS version before installing it. OBS forum listing for Media Playlist Source.
