To keep a YouTube live stream running around the clock, first confirm your channel is eligible, schedule the stream in YouTube Studio, and send a stable feed from an encoder or a cloud service. For a do-it-yourself setup, use RTMPS, a conservative bitrate your upload connection can sustain, and a tested backup plan. Rehearse the full viewer experience before launch and plan your recording separately: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but its guidance does not establish that one longer broadcast will be fully archived.

Choose how the stream will run

YouTube supports mobile, webcam, and encoder workflows. Mobile is suited to quick updates, while a webcam can be enough for a simple computer setup. An encoder gives you more control for scenes, overlays, gameplay, and other higher-production formats. YouTube says expensive gear is not required to start; it recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events, not as a universal requirement.

A 24/7 broadcast also needs an operating plan: the stream source, internet connection, power, and streaming device all have to keep working. A single home computer and connection can be practical, but they are potential points of interruption. YouTube’s setup advice does not specify a guaranteed uptime architecture or a complete 24/7 failover design.

Check channel eligibility and schedule the stream

  1. Verify the channel and its status. YouTube says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days to live stream.
  2. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a stream or schedule one. Set the title, visibility, and other stream details. Scheduling provides a watch page that you can share, and viewers can set reminders.
  3. Choose a stream key. Copy the stream URL and key from Live Control Room into your encoder. YouTube describes the key as the encoder’s password and address for sending the feed. Treat it like a credential: do not share it publicly. A custom key can be useful if you need to reuse one; if it is compromised, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder.

Configure the encoder for a stable feed

YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 frames per second, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. Its current bitrate recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec, so check the official settings table when configuring your encoder. For H.264, the cited table recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Those are recommendations, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain them.

  • 850W 80+ GOLD POWER SUPPLY, 360MM LIQUID COOLING & WiFi 7 - An 850W 80 Plus Gold certified power supply provides stable, efficient power with headroom for future upgrades, while a 360mm AIO liquid cooler, WiFi 7, and an ARGB mid-tower case keep the Ryzen 7 CPU cool and connected in a clean build.
  • READY TO PLAY OUT OF THE BOX - Arrives fully assembled and tested with Windows 11 Home pre-installed, so your prebuilt gaming computer is ready to set up in minutes. Assembled in the USA, and backed by a one-year limited warranty and lifetime free technical support.
  • Transport: Prefer RTMPS when available for encrypted transmission. HLS is an option for certain workflows, including HDR or codecs that RTMP does not support. HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency, so use it only when your use case and encoder support it.
  • Resolution and bitrate: Start with a setting your real, sustained upload speed can handle. Higher resolution and frame rate require more bandwidth. A stable lower-quality picture is preferable to a high-bitrate feed that repeatedly buffers or disconnects.
  • Keyframes and audio: Keep the keyframe interval at two seconds where possible and within YouTube’s stated maximum of four seconds. Test representative motion and audio, not just a static screen.
  • Latency: Lower latency can reduce delay but may increase buffering. If viewers do not need to interact with the stream in real time, YouTube says low latency is less important.

Setting names and available controls vary by encoder. Check the encoder’s documentation for where to enter the stream URL and key and how to set CBR, keyframe interval, video codec, and audio codec. Recheck YouTube’s current recommendations before launch because platform settings can change.

Size the internet connection for continuous streaming

Measure upload speed at the location and time the stream will actually run. YouTube recommends that available upload bandwidth cover the primary bitrate, any backup bitrate, and an additional 20% of headroom. For example, a 10 Mbps primary feed alone is not a reason to provision only 10 Mbps of upload capacity. Shared networks can also reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder.

  • Use a wired connection where practical; it can avoid some wireless variability, though it cannot prevent an outage from your internet provider.
  • If the stream matters enough to justify it, consider a backup internet link and test the encoder’s failover behavior. This is an operational choice, not a YouTube requirement.
  • Keep other devices and uploads from unexpectedly consuming the connection’s capacity.
  • A UPS for the streaming computer is an optional safeguard against some local power interruptions. It does not prevent internet, encoder, or YouTube-side interruptions.

Rehearse the complete viewer path before launch

  1. Prepare early. YouTube advises setting up encoder streams at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start.
  2. Start the encoder and check the preview. Confirm that the feed appears in Live Control Room before clicking Start Streaming. Check both picture and sound.
  3. Test failover. If you have a backup encoder or connection, test it before relying on it. YouTube’s event guidance describes stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and verifying that the player rolls over to the backup.
  4. Check the watch page on more than one device. Open the public or unlisted watch page as appropriate and confirm that it works on a phone as well as a computer.
  5. Monitor continuously. Watch stream health and listen for audio problems. For an always-on stream, monitoring must be a repeatable routine rather than a one-time preflight.

Plan archives and copyright separately

Do not rely on one 24-hour archive

YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not establish that a single broadcast lasting longer than 12 hours will be fully archived. If a complete recording matters, keep an independent local recording or plan shorter, segmented broadcasts, then verify YouTube’s current behavior before relying on its archive.

Use content you have the right to stream

Make sure you have the rights needed for every video, song, and other element in the loop. A video being pre-recorded or available online does not itself establish permission to broadcast it. Check applicable copyright rules and YouTube’s current policies before putting a playlist on air. A copyright safety checklist can help you review the content you plan to use.

Troubleshoot common interruptions

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
Encoder cannot connect Incorrect stream URL or key, a reset key not updated in the encoder, or an ingestion/protocol mismatch. Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, update the encoder, and confirm the selected protocol is supported by both sides. Keep the key private.
Stream drops or buffers Upload capacity is too low or variable, or the network is shared with other traffic. Check upload speed during operating hours, reduce resolution or bitrate, account for backup bitrate plus 20% headroom, and test any backup link.
Video looks unstable or pixelated The chosen bitrate may exceed what the connection can sustain, or the encoder profile may not match the intended output. Check stream health and representative motion; lower bitrate or resolution until the feed is stable, and verify the encoder’s CBR and keyframe settings.
Picture works but audio is absent or poor Audio input, codec, or levels may be misconfigured. Check the encoder’s audio source and levels, use AAC or MP3 as recommended by YouTube, and preview sound before launch.
Failover does not take over The backup path may not be configured or tested successfully. Rehearse by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network cable, then confirm the player changes to the backup before depending on it.
