App Store Optimization (ASO) can improve discovery and help more visitors understand why to install, but Apple and Google do not promise a specific download increase from metadata or creative changes.
What app store optimization can—and cannot—do for an OTT app
ASO is the work of making an app easier to find and its store listing more persuasive to the right prospective users. For an OTT service, that means clearly communicating its real content proposition, such as on-demand programming, live coverage, language options, or supported viewing experiences.
Store discovery is not controlled by keywords alone. Google says its discovery systems consider relevance, metadata and other signals, app quality, and how users respond to search results. It does not publish an OTT-specific ranking formula. Its guidance says: “The best thing a developer can do to increase discoverability is to build an app that people enjoy and recommend to others.” Google Play App Discovery and Ranking
That makes ASO one part of acquisition, not a substitute for a useful, reliable app. No general OTT-specific download-lift benchmark is established by the platform documentation cited here, so treat improvements as questions to test rather than results to promise.

Start with the audience, store, and device
Decide which viewers and storefronts the listing is meant to serve before rewriting copy or commissioning screenshots. An app may need distinct approaches for different content interests, languages, or markets. Also account for where the app is distributed: Apple platforms and Google Play do not present every listing in the same context.
- Identify the likely viewer and the reason they would install: a particular catalog, live event coverage, original programming, or a language-specific offer.
- List the stores and territories that matter, and verify current availability and requirements for each before planning a release.
- Consider the device context. Google discusses discovery across phones, tablets, and TVs, but mobile listing practices should not automatically be treated as identical to every TV storefront.
- For each audience, define the truthful promise the app can make and the content or experience that supports it.
Make the listing specific, clear, and accurate
Choose a focused app name and description
Explain what the service offers in language a prospective viewer will understand. A short description might state the service’s distinctive content or viewing proposition; the full description can clarify the catalog, live or on-demand availability, language options, and supported experience where those details are accurate. Avoid implying content, features, awards, or rankings the app does not have.
Google Play’s documented listing limits are 30 characters for the app name, 80 for the short description, and 4,000 for the full description. These are platform constraints, not recommended targets for filling every character. Check the current Play Console guidance before submitting because limits and requirements may change. Write for people, not a keyword list
Use relevant terms naturally where they help identify the service and its content. Repetition or keyword stuffing makes a listing harder to read and can conflict with store policies. Google advises focused, accessible titles and user-oriented descriptions; its metadata policy requires truthful, non-spammy listing content. Google Play search guidance · Google Play metadata policy
Use screenshots and previews to show the viewing proposition
The opening creative should quickly make the app’s content and experience legible. Select real screens and previews that help a prospective viewer understand what they can watch or do, rather than relying on generic promotional art that could describe any streaming service.
- A broad catalog may be best represented by a clear range of content.
- A service built around a distinctive original can lead with that title if the image reflects the app and the rights allow its use.
- A live offer can show the live coverage experience, provided the app actually supports it.
- A language-focused service can make its relevant language and content visible to the audience being addressed.
These are creative hypotheses, not universally proven winners. Google advises that screenshots be high quality and show supported platforms. Apple Product Page Optimization can test alternate icons, screenshots, and app previews for eligible iOS and iPadOS pages. Tailor pages when the audience promise changes
Do not create variants merely to multiply pages. A tailored page is useful when a campaign or audience has a meaningfully different reason to install—for example, interest in a particular show, sport, language, or service feature—and the app can fulfill that promise.

For an OTT service, a campaign for a specific title or audience can point to a page whose screenshots and promotional message match that interest. Localize the complete store experience
A translated title by itself may leave the page confusing or unconvincing. Review the short and full descriptions, screenshots, content examples, and value proposition for every target language and market. Make sure the creative and claims fit local audiences and the content actually available to them.
Google recommends localization and supports experiments on localized listings; Apple Product Page Optimization supports localization in available languages. Verify supported languages, territories, and store availability before release. A result in one locale should not be assumed to apply to another. Before changing a listing, write down the hypothesis and the audience it concerns. For example: “Will a content-led opening screenshot make this service’s offer clearer than a feature-led screenshot for visitors in this locale?” Change a meaningful element, choose an appropriate outcome, and wait for enough evidence to make a decision.

- Set a question. Compare one clear creative or messaging idea at a time where possible, so the result is interpretable.
- Choose the audience and locale. Record the store, market, language, and campaign context. Do not assume a result generalizes beyond them.
- Select the metric that matches the goal. Google Play listing experiments can use install clicks, open clicks, or preregistration clicks. Apple reports conversion and treatment performance for product-page tests.
- Allow the experiment to produce useful evidence. An early apparent lead may be inconclusive. Apple recommends waiting until a 90% confidence label appears before applying a winner.
- Review downstream quality when available. Page conversion is not the same as sustained use. Consider opens and retention alongside acquisition measures where your analytics provide them.
- Apply cautiously and keep learning. Roll out a supported result to the relevant page or audience, then test the next material question.

Common ASO mistakes and how to correct them
- Expecting metadata alone to lift rankings. Discovery also reflects quality and user response. Improve the app experience as well as the page.
- Using vague or interchangeable copy. State the real content or viewing distinction a likely user cares about, then support it with accurate creative.
- Showing screens that do not match the app. Replace misleading or outdated imagery with current, representative screens for supported devices.
- Stuffing keywords into titles and descriptions. Rewrite for clarity and policy compliance rather than repetition.
- Translating only the title. Localize the full proposition and creative, and verify that examples fit the market.
- Calling a result too early. Wait for useful confidence, and treat inconclusive tests as inconclusive rather than as proof.
- Generalizing one audience’s result everywhere. Record store, locale, and audience, then validate important changes in other contexts.
